@build-better-things they look amazing. I'm wondering when you tackle a new project, how do you know what thickness and layers you would need ? Thinking of tackling a house extension project down the line but what my layer will built up with. So far I have youtube, some articles and spec sheets I see online. I'm worried they might not get passed by building control
For me, I’ve been doing it so long, I just know from seeing it done and working under great builders and designers. For you…I suppose it’s UA-cam, Facebook groups, and asking the right questions to the right people. For Construction, you’re always learning, same for design. There’s often several ways to do the same thing, that’s why it’s both fascinating and rewarding. 🙂
Love the videos! - would love to know your thoughts on the solid concrete floor option you mentioned.. should we consider anything? (other then ensuring the front of the house be vented if it is a suspended timber floor)… thanks regardless, you’re videos have helped a lot already!
I’ll use the solid concrete floor if height is an issue, otherwise I think timber suspended floor with solum is a better option. It’s cheaper, quicker, and easier. The other time I’d consider using solid slab would be if we were doing full masonry cavity walls, and that the masons or brick-workers could do the whole thing. Brickwork is one of the few trades I sub contract. However, as I’ve said in my previous videos, I’ll aim for timber frame even with brick outer. I’m talking about small domestic builds of course.
@@build-better-things How is a suspended floor cheaper? Both floor types require the same materials but suspended then also requires timber, joist hangers, ventilation bricks and possibly another skips worth of excavated earth. I'm sure I'm missing something but it doesn't seem to add up?
Is the additional 50mm of concrete for a solid v solum where the cost comes in? It feels too small but I guess that might depend on the sqm area of the extension? 🤔 Love your videos btw! Very informative but me being me I'll always have a load of questions!
Why do people build "solems" instead of just a slab-on-grade? Added height without having to change the levels of the earth? Access for techniques? Why not just fill it with earth or make a basement? It seems so bad for thermal performance to ventilate this area
I would usually opt for a solum and timber suspended floor over a ground bearing slab, where I have the choice. Maybe you have done the heat loss calculations, I certainly have, so I’m interested to know your data that gives your reasoning. There are times I’d use a ground bearing slab. Not here however….. the example project I give in the video, I would never even consider a ground bearing slab. Filling the void with hardcore? Really?? Ventilation bad for thermal performance?? I’ve never heard that one before….i thought the opposite was true!
