- Maine's potato harvest is a grueling, four-week marathon of 12-hour days. At Double G Farms in the Aroostook County town of Blaine, the Garrison family produces 14,000 tons of potatoes a year. This year, a prolonged drought has made the ground harder to dig.
Chasing Maine is a biweekly video series that explores Maine from a distinct visual perspective. Join veteran Maine journalist and storyteller Roger McCord as he chases the people, places and things that define the unique character of the Pine Tree State.

You're doing such a great job at showing everyone the way you see the world! Thank you for this!
Great to see such community spirit. While I wouldn't go so far as the County, I feel the same about Maine. 40 years ago we came here and this wonderful place is home forever.
Aroostook County - my brother-in-law refers to it as "the county." I've watched Jeff P spray potatoes in a Bell 47 helicopter north of Blaine. Been through Blaine, Mars Hill and points north countless times. I grew up across the border in Carleton County and worked my young years to late teens on two potato farms. I married a beautiful girl from Florenceville, NB, the home of McCain Foods. The Saint John River valley in the north creates the border between Canada and the USA. Wonderful countries.
I grew up in Caribou and started picking potatoes in 1965 at age 5. Loved it.
Love watching the big equipment work! We grow and harvest potatoes at home on a much smaller scale but equally rewarding.
BIG thumbs up!
Boy! You ought to watch ME harvest potatoes here in N WI. Just finished this root hog bare knuckle no holds barred spud harvest. I’ve learned. I wore gloves this year.
I didn't realize that they still do the 2-3 week school break for harvest time.
yup. Potato break.
❤
God's people!!
Do you hired people from mexico with the h2a program?
The fields become your life in Aroostook. I remember when the "digger" machine would break and it would give me time to catch up. I remember Billy Adams switching tickets on the barrels. He did it to me. Once. And only once.
LOL
Oh my God it's a grueling 12-hour day I'm sitting in a tractor why we hire all the minimum wage workers to do the grunt work
