I LOVE SPACE HORROR!! Right now I’m reading Dead Silent which is kinda good, I don’t like the haunted ship part but it’s good otherwise and I want more like it
I watched this video when it came out and just now am getting around to Ship of Fools, have to say the first maybe quarter did not catch me but oh man, what a great suggestion! Thank you!
Good to know about The Loop. I wanted to at least attempt it this year. I like that in movies but I feel like it annoys me a lot more in books? I'm most interested in Horrid, though.
Oho, space horror! I'm still dealing with the mermaids, though. p.s. By the way, The Midnight Meat Train (1984) by Clive Barker is a good story (from Books of Blood, vol. I).
Oh! Also, since you like space horror, you should check out Parasite by Darcy Coates. I am new to the genre so I don't know how unique it is, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.
I have read a few good space horror stories. Parasite by Darcy Coates, Screams from the Void by Anne Tibbits, and Skinwrapper by Stephen Kozenewski. You should check them out.
I downloaded Ship of Fools just now. Sounds good. In the back of my mind is a space horror book I read last year that I liked. I'm trying to come up with the title. I'll have to check Calibre when I'm back home so I can post the title here. Speaking of the almost religion of meat, Google Mundare Saskatchewan and look at the images. Maybe the town inspired the book. :) We travelled through Mundare years ago, and when we saw the statue we stopped to take a picture (as did four other families in cars in the two minutes we were there).
@@TheShadesofOrange oof, Alberta, yes. We were there in 2004 so it's been a while (went from ON to the YT for work, so went by car). Finished Klara and the Sun. Poignant. Liked it. Ending different than I expected. Was intrigued with the descriptions of how Klara sees things (in boxes with boxes becoming larger/smaller based on importance of the object or event, and the attention she had to divert to it. And how she could see several emotional faces in things at once (eyes narrowed, eyes open, eyes fearful)). A clever creative film director and team could bring this book to life. If it worked, it'd be brilliant. If it worked. Perhaps better to keep the story in the book and the telling in our heads. d Thank you for recommending it.
Hello! I'm really enjoying your videos and our tastes tend to run pretty close when it comes to horror, so I was wondering if you had any fantasy horror recs? I've been scouring the internet in search of them and coming up empty almost every time. By fantasy horror I mean horror set in fantasy worlds and where it's not just a horror scene or two in an otherwise completely fantasy (or dark fantasy or grimdark) novel but an honest horror book with the athmosphere and everything. (Also, might pick Meat up, thanks for sharing ^w^)
Theshadesoforgebook, I had this book around 15, 17 years, READ SHIPS OF FOOLS, TWICE. I Love it, hate the ending, but not going to write what happen for the people who still want to read this book. But I was wondering all these years, is there a sequel, or a 2nd book to this story???? (I hope I didn't spoiled this book to anyone who wants to read it?)
If you enjoy Halloween and Christmas ghost stories I’ve got a great one for you. ….Don’t Play Games With The Builder…just finished reading it and could not put the book down. Ended up missing work through it, because I over slept. Lol
I liked all the characters without reservation. Especially Brewer, who comes from one of the most brutal and ugly home lives I could possibly imagine and yet has still managed to develop into a good-natured kid with more empathy than virtually anyone else his age, who is completely ride-or-die supportive of his friends.
Ship of Fools sounds awesome.. I'll look into it. By the way, since you're well versed with horror, have you read any werewolf novels? If so, what would you suggest??
Hope you enjoy Ship of Fools. And honestly I struggle to find anything I like in that subgenre. I read Mongrals by Stephen Graham Jones but I thought it needed plot. 😅
Oh, I see.. thanks. from Stephen Graham Jones I've read The Only Good Indians. And also written by him: a few months ago someone recommended The Night of the Mannequins
What I got from Horrid I really liked, but I wish I had gotten more. I loved the ending but I wanted a better lead up to it. It felt too quick. Basically this book should have been longer.
I can't imagine that you didn't feel The Loop had heart. It was absolutely *overflowing* with heart. The teens actually seemed like real teens, and it was all basically a story about the misfit kids of a gentrified small town banding together to save the town that had rejected them and written them off as the losers and undesirables. As for being a John Carpenter-style movie homage, definitely. But I loved these kids and the story was heaps of fun. Glad to see you enjoyed Ship of Fools. Part of the philosophical aspect of the story is that it postulates the existence of evil as an actual, material force in the universe, like physics. It really was a book that was epic in scope, and covered a lot of narrative ground. I think it's an underappreciated cosmic horror classic.
Yeah regarding the Loop. I was probably in a mood when I read it because I really hated it. Maybe I just hate teenagers. But I am so, so glad you told me about Ship of Fools. I feel like it's such an underhyped gem.
I couldn’t stand Tender is the Flesh. So many people loved it but it was a clear one star for me. It felt like clear vegan proselytizing mixed with torture porn with a lack of interesting characters or plot. I’m interested in Ship of Fools though for sure!
Just a note that Ship Of Fools was re-released by Orbit Book as Unto Leviathon in case anyone, like me, was struggling to find a kindle edition.
And it is a VERY scary book, from about half way in. A slow burn.
I LOVE SPACE HORROR!! Right now I’m reading Dead Silent which is kinda good, I don’t like the haunted ship part but it’s good otherwise and I want more like it
Ship of Fools is my favorite story that’s ever been told ha.
Such a good one!
The Richard Paul Russo novel is also called Unto leviathan in the UK and Europe i believe and is really good I'd also highly recommend it.
Good to know!
Ship of Fools sounds amazing! I just bought Horrid recently so I am very excited to dive into it 😀
I hope you enjoy them both. And Horrid is just such a beautiful book to own

You have me interested in “Ship of Fools”. Thank you for another great set of reviews.
Thanks I hope you enjoy that one!
Go ahead, Read it.
Didn’t think I’d be interested in Space Horror, but I’m really intrigued.
Awesome!
MEAT just sounds like a fun read. Might have to check it out
It really is... hope you do

Ship of Fools sounds great! I loved Obscura by Joe hart which I think I read based on your recommendation 🙂
Ahh yes! I did recommend Obscura. I think I like Ship of Fools even more
@@TheShadesofOrange Nice, I have to read it for sure!
Meat sounds fantastic! It reminds me a little of Tender is the Flesh (only with less cannibalism).
It definitely has similar vibes
It's not a space horror, but a space book. I recently got Project Hail Mary after Marianna's review. Have you read it?
I have! I'll have an SFF wrap up coming next Tuesday
Oh! Also, since you like space horror, you should check out Parasite by Darcy Coates. I am new to the genre so I don't know how unique it is, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless.
Thanks! I've heard good things about that one
One of my favorite books is Richard Adams The Plague Dogs. It is about animal experimentation. Forget splatterpink, this book will haunt you.
Haven't heard of that one. Thanks for the rec

@@chrisconnors7418 what a great road trip. And yes the ending of Klara was not what I expected... a bit underwhelming after all the buildup

space horror seems like a neglected genre.
Agreed! It's hard to find quality reads

I found The Loop to be a wild ride. Did I like anyone? No. I'm not sure we're supposed to? I liked the premise quite a bit, though.
