One strategy I like to employ with Drillbert to cut down on the babysitting is to always make sure I dig a vertical shaft 3 units deeper than the current layer he's on. That way when he rebounds off the far wall, he'll drop down leaving an optimal 2 unit gap above and continue digging. As opposed to leaving 1 unit "potholes" that cause Drillbert a layer bunch of already exposed dirt.
Automatic defense is almost OP if you make sure to keep it upgraded. Searching for water is frustrating. But I routinely beat the Final Attack on Brutal and all I do is toss in a couple of heals.
