    Great video ! All Midgets sprung from Donald Healeys original Sprite of 1958. Scratch a Midget and the Sprite is hiding inside. The "new "look of 1961 with front wings is when it got hard to work on. Had many over the years....pity the poor guy trying to work on an MGA ! My first engine pull was my buddies bugeye in his backyard while still a teenager. We removed the front hood and through a chain fall over a swing set. Had a few old wrenches...a screwdriver and slip joint pliers....his dad had a total fit said he'd ruined it but in a weeks time the Sprite was ripping the road again....Original problem was a totally burned out clutch..🔥🔥🔥🔥

    Unlike the Triumph engines where the flywheel retains the spigot (pilot) bush and it's loose in the crank. The A-series engine's Spigot (pilot) bush is an interference fit in the rear of the crank. That could cause you some problems...... 🥴

    That bushing is a press fit, in order to achieve the proper ID fit and clearance !!

    That's such a CUTE little clutch! 😂
    I've always liked the Midgets and Sprites. Never owned one myself. A friend had one... a tall guy who looked ridiculous in it. He drove it from Colorado to Washingron state, then back again Had me service it when he returned...almost no oil in the gearbox! I was impressed it survived the trip!

    Way to go Elin! Like you, I love to prove the people who say it is impossible, wrong. The engine leveler is a wonderful tool, so are an extra set of arms and hands. I am thinking, that when you had problems when you first tried to mate the engine with the transmission, you just needed to turn the tailshaft yoke slightly and it may have gone right in, as it may have been the splines not correctly going in. Nice job re-facing the water outlet flange.

      I tried turning the crankshaft at that point. It didn’t move. The splines were already engaged with the clutch. Probably the end of the shaft needed to align with the bushing in question. So we were trying to be gentle and nit damage it again

    Being a Austin Healey Sprite owner it is so nice to see you slumming and working on a MG :) . You did a great job on the car. Cheers!

      Sprites & Spridgets are the best ;) -- small & mighty, a fave with vintage racers, too!

    Great job Elin. I seem to remember taking out a Midget engine & gearbox but even doing it that way it was a bit of a struggle at times. I have an affection for them, but wouldn't want to own one. I prefer the Austin-Healey Mk 1 frogeye Sprite myself which is a lot easier to work on at the business end.

    I get it man money is money so you'll even fix MG's but keep this up and people will start dropping off Jag's for you to sort out. You have the skills to do that even though it may take a bit of research and I will certaily keep doing the paytreon stuff. To do it though you need a bigger garage and more staff. Hey maybe that's not a bad idea if you have management skills :)

      I used to manage a big denim clothing factory in Bulgaria with hundreds employees for years, downsized to managing 30 people mattress production in Canada, then downsized to managing 5-6 people in the limo production and now I am managing only myself! Ask me when I was the happiest and most productive! I am done dealing with people…. 😂

    Great job Elin, glad you didn’t listen to the “experts”, it is quicker to do what you did if you don’t need to work or on the gearbox. And as someone else has said, that gearbox sounds just fine for a 1275 Midget, remember that gearbox is derived from the old Morris Minors! Later Midgets with the 1500 Triumph engine also got an all synchro box which was a bit quieter.

    i had a 1968 1275gt midget which was nice...did a full restore and it was so fun driving it...spinning the rear wheels...driving at around 50mph and pushing down to 2nd gear to lock up the rear wheels and then floor it to spin out of the lockup....weird little car..u feel like a midget in it but connected

    Wow, what a great video ! Thank you so much for the serie ! Do you believe it would be possible to work on the clutch from under, by dropping the transmission instead of getting the motor out ?
    Thank you in advance

    Good work Elin! I'm still mystified as to how a previous 'mechanic' damaged the crankshaft bushing bore and thus probably caused the 'new' bushing to crack on (forceful) insertion.

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Рік тому +2

      No idea…. Looks like the damage started from the edge and went half way in. I wonder if there was an old bushing stuck in there and they jammed a screwdriver or something like that to take it out….

    ...Funny question,....Can the little yellow fan on the Midget be 'modified' to fit a TR3A ? ....It would certainly be an improvement in airflow and less weight.....John (west coast, Can.)

    Isn’t there a free trade agreement between uk and Canada, or EU Canada? Odd… perhaps not all industries are covered?

      Still being negotiated Canada-UK probably because of Brexit. I think that Canada-EU is operational.

      Antique car parts come into Canada duty free but you might still get dinged for GST and a handling fee. Many times the parts will just come through Canada Post without any charge. The problem is with the other delivery companies trying to take advantage of a customer. Always go with Canada Post if you can.

    why not clean/degrease engine while hanging on the lift?

    • @RustyBeauties
      @RustyBeauties  Рік тому +2

      It is a tricky question. If I did clean the engine you were gonna ask why I didn’t clean the engine bay while the engine was out. If I did clean the engine and the bay you were gonna ask why I did not paint them… It is easy to get carried away and it is OK when it is your own car, but I can’t just decide to restore the whole car when it was brought to me for a clutch replacement.
