- A peacock displays for a peahen, and she gives it right back to him, displaying also! One theory is that she's saying, "Hands off ladies....he's all mine!" Taken at the L.A. County Arboretum in January 2012.

@Henz Carl Tupas Henztupas@gmail.com great info! We once lived in a village and didn't realize someone there had peafowl. In the mornings I'd be wondering what makes that strange call! But I didn't realize the hens also fanned out their tails.

I don't like how insanely artificial women make themselves up as, just to be loved and desired - and we live in a mentally ill society because of it. God gave each of us beauty, and somehow, we decided that what nature provided in each of us, to the other, was inadequate and had to be sterilized and processed. It makes me feel we are headed to extinction far before we were supposed to.

@AndromedaChao2 I believe the display in females is like a warning to other females. She is warning them to keep away from the peacock whom she is interested in. When she raises her tail feathers to squirrels and such, that's also a warning for them to keep away from her.
Yes, for short distances. They do more jumping and hopping than flying.
I had to come back for another look, she looks almost regal. I don't think these boys would get their way with this gorgeous peahen... Oh! she would be soooo choosy. Only the best will do!

This is fascinating!!! I didn’t expect the male’s tail feathers to be that much larger than the female’s. Or are those display feathers?
In the animal kingdom, the longer the tail, the more flamboyant the feathers, the more colorful feathers the elaborate ornaments, the larger the body etc happens in men
Why are you surprised that a man has a longer tail? Most things of men are already larger and ornately colored. In man and animal. You'd be surprised if it was the other way around. Men are more majestic

they are Galliformes so they mostly stay on the ground. they only fly short distances mainly to escape predators.
