- Blue Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflora) is a hardy perennial known for its beautiful blue blooms that appear to inflate before bursting into a brilliant five-pointed star. But you might not know about the blue balloon flower's amazing medicinal roots! Learn more and order: www.rareseeds.com/blue-balloo...
In Korea, it’s considered as a very healthy side dish. We eat it quite often. We make it a syrup, tea, powder and jam with it. My grandmother had a bronchitis and this is good for that disease. The roots are very very yummy!
I just bought one plant from local nursery, the flowers are gorgeous, I call them are lucky stars. 💜
Each week I wait for a new video from you guys! I love learning the history of plants! Every time I watch, I feel like buying those plants!!
ditto! except i have had platycodon for years!
These have been one of my favorite flowers that I have added
Charming! These balloon flowers are perennial in South Carolina. A neighbor has some which come back every year.
Amazing. After 15 years, ours tops out at about 6' with many stems. I never knew you could eat the roots, not that I'm going to start digging them up.
i grew up popping these balloon flowers with my mom in the garden.
Love learning the history. Very interesting. Thank you!
Thank you for taking time to share your information.
Also, it helps for the cats with Severe Diarrhea or Constipation after using Flagyl,
Give orally 2xper day based on weight. after a day or two, it eased the symptoms.
Also, use for the upper respiratory problem.
I’ve had this flower in my garden for years! Thank you for telling this story. Now i know I have more than just a beautiful flowering plant💙
hi how many days did it take to get the first bloom? im in hot central Florida.
So interesting! I had no idea!!
I finally got some to take off.... right frm Rareseeds.... I want more and more in my garden!
From my experience... this first year with Balloon Flowers that were potted, the ones that were facing North which get twice as much sun than the ones facing South (only indirect shade light) did much better and kept on flowering. While the shaded ones are healthy, but flowerless so far.
Will experiment now going into Fall and putting them from pots into a raised bed for them to propagate freely.
Is it better to cut down the spent flowers and just drop them in the dirt for the seeds?
Did you try moving them? Sometimes it is not recommended to move a well established plant because it can damage the tap root. It's one of my favs in my garden too!
Hope there will be more videos about flowers... Stay safe...
It's called balloon flower not because it resembles a balloon before blooming but because it makes a loud pop if you pinch it or step on it at that stage just like popping a balloon. I planted 4 twenty years ago and now there are at least a hundred. we have cold winters, so be aware that once they are mature and established they are invasive

Good morning, I have been using this plant for a short time and I loved your explanation! So I can use the roots and not the leaves and flowers for medicinal tea and that's what I understand?
yes, we only recommend using the roots, as some sources consider the older leaves and flowers toxic to some extent!
Love color..have 4. BUT....flop to hround when tall...and need deheading daily.
I have won 5 blue ribbons on my balloon flower thus year. 4 just at one fair.
How do you deadhead this beauty?
You'd want to pinch of the blossom heads about a quarter of an inch above the nearest set of leaves.
@@RareSeedsBC Thank you!
Do they grow in tropical areas?
They grow best in mild climates, and like temps between 60 and 80 F. If you're growing them in a more tropical area, make sure they get shade in the hottest part of the day.
@@RareSeedsBC TY. Maybe I'll try growing them next year, we're on our way to summer here, they might not survive that
MIgardener channel just did a video within the past week claiming there are no real blue flowers.
interesting, Ill have to take a look! While I agree that Platycodon is one of those flowers that is called blue when it is truly purple... I wonder about blue hydrangea or blue morning glory...www.rareseeds.com/clarks-heavenly-blue-morning-glory/
