    Hope to hear your review of Mad Max. Incredible movie. Visually stunning and one of the best action movies of all time.

    Watch all the things!
    These days I think I'm more likely to find something unusual or interesting in the art film type but a mainstream film done right is still one of the greatest things ever. Even the terrible mainstream films can say something interesting about the culture that made them though.

    The art/mainstream distinction doesn't matter that much to me, since a film can be both. The silent classic Metropolis may be artistic, but it was commercial entertainment back then. If by "Hollywood entertainment," you mean a film that lacks depth, then an "art film" can be that too, if it is not well made. We watch films primarily for pleasure, the same way we enjoy any art form.

      +classicvideogoodies - I mostly agree. But, Hollywood seems to too often play the money game. Sequels, Remakes, Reboots, Etc. Lets make a buck, and forget about creating something new. Art can be in Hollywood, as much as it can be in indie films. I love Raiders Of The Lost Ark. It the perfect movie - movie (if that makes any sense). It is the reason we have popcorn. But, I think it is so important to support the Indie Films, and the theaters that show them. Films like Once (2007), Room (2015), I, Daniel Blake (2016) - Etc. Yes, I think a film that is artistic can come from Hollywood, or from the Indie film makers. The term Art House sort of blurs the idea of film as art. Best wishes, Ted

      @@theolamp5312 I'm all for supporting indie films, but I'm also for supporting any films that are "good." Good films are what shape the art and commerce of film and take the industry to a better place. Bad films, no matter where they come from, indie or Hollywood, will be forgotten.

    • @theolamp5312
      @theolamp5312 5 років тому

      @ClassicVideoGoodies - I think my comment totally agrees with what you said. The only thing that I would add, is that High Budget Hollywood releases too often subjugate character development to production values. But, I agree that bad films can come from any source. If you don't think or remember a film afterwards, it was probably not very good.

    • @classicvideogoodies
      @classicvideogoodies 5 років тому +1

      @@theolamp5312 A film may not be remembered by most people, but it could be remembered and liked by just a few (or even just one person) who liked it a lot and would become inspired by it to make great films. Such has been the career of Quentin Tarantino, who was inspired by genre films that had been looked down upon such as giallo films, kung-fu films, exploitation films, etc., to make unique films of his own. So you can never count a film out even if it is considered "bad." Posterity determines its true worth. If a film has not been physically lost (like many silent films), it will always have a chance to gain acceptance even if it never has.

    Nice video, I love your argument on importance of balance. What about light comedy vs. Black Comedy? (Funny, easy-going humour or dark, brutally honest humour?). I know it's similar to this topic (light comedy being mainstream, dark generally being arty/indie). I think Normal/light comedy is fine, plenty of great stuff comes from it, but dark comedy wins 9/10 times for me. Dark humour isn't for everyone but I think it weaves in more socially commentary and fresher ideas. It also usually includes more emotional drama/conflict, creating a more gripping viewing experience for me.

    You mention Welles and his use of deep focus. Of course, he didn't invent that approach and wasn't the only one to use it before and after him (er, stating the obvous), but he certainly brought it into the the pubic's awareness. I suspect you might know about or be interested in the films of William Cameron Menzies, who was primarily a production designer, but also co-producer and director. He was among the first to explore deep focus and popularize it among directors. Have you ever discussed his work, his films?

    Both John Malkovich and F. Murray Abraham remind us not to make that false dichotomy:
    because any movie could be good or bad regardless of whether it's reeling "art" or a churned-out blockbuster.

    Unfortunately, I believe it’s just the climate we live in currently. I think your opening remarks could equally apply to politics, for example, just like how everyone on one side of the isle doesn’t want anything to do with the other side. But hopefully, we can all come together, as you say, and maybe learn a thing or two and come out the better for it on the other side.

    Very valuable arguments. I like Hollywood movies like I like an amusement park ride. Most are fun and cool but really forgetable. Nothing wrong with that. But why do I watch a lot of serial dramas find them so enjoyable but also feel like shows like "True Detective" Breaking Bad" "Hannibal" "GOT" invite serious discussion that used to be designated for movies..even Hollywood movies. Seems like mainstream Hollywood movie making is severely underwhelming these days. Case in point..movies used to be Zeitgeist moments. I remember the weekend after movies like "Sixth Sense" "Blair Witch Project" and others where the national cultural discussion centered on the movies. Now that conversation focuses on shows. Most notably GOT. thoughts?

      Kirk Colton I totally agree. It's because television shows can be watched anywhere and anytime, unlike most movies. Movie theaters are a bit old fashioned in this day and age, which is part of why television is probably more successful. Plus television is just smarter with better writing. GOT is exceptionally well-done. The movies could learn a thing or two about how to do fantasy right from that show.

      I don't want to come across like a snob. I really liked the past two X Men movies, the last Captain America and thought Guardians was an amazing genre movie. I do think there are too many comic book movies..but I do like some of them. GOT which I have watched from the premiere of the 1st episode should not work at all (too many characters, very complicated plot lines etc) but it is one of the biggest successes in HBO history. I know big budget movies need to have spectacle. I think Max Max was a great example of spectacle. I guess I know Hollywood movies are made for teenagers and I am too old. But the movies I grew up with that were genre spectacle movies were also great movies (Ghostbusters, Back To The Future...Aliens etc)

      Fuck them! You can always find chicks that match your typical artsy taste. You know they exist.
      Maybe some of them might be hot. For example, the chick in the video.

    I don't care what anyone says about defending art films. Art films help kill movies as a whole. Art films DONT APPEAL TO THE CASUAL FANBASE!!!!! That simple!!!!! When you watch WWE you watch it for the bigger guys and who are over in the drawing board. Not the ones that do flips and shit and can't talk for shit. It's gotta be casual not critical. Not saying making movies just for the sake of money is cool, cuz it's not. That I can agree with. And GCI and SFX.

    • @justincrediblefantasy8263

      Tito D it’s good to have art, in a film. But making an artistic film, is something much different. Art films attract the geeky nerdy nimrod film fans. Films like Indiana Jones, or Coming to America attract the casual fans. Simple, numbers matter. Some art films are good, I enjoyed red cliff. And I enjoy old movies like Dirty Harry or taxi driver. But not films that are 100% for art. If you were a pro movie producer you would not want to make art films for a living.

    • @justincrediblefantasy8263

      Tito D and also used pro wrestling as a comparison, cuz it’s the same story with the critics vs casual thing

      Tito D I would much rather watch infinity war than an art film, and I HATE the avengers.

    • @justincrediblefantasy8263
      @justincrediblefantasy8263 6 років тому

      Tito D only three art films made it pass the 100 million dollar box office point. And no I'm sure there are some people that make art films for the sake of art.

    • @justincrediblefantasy8263
      @justincrediblefantasy8263 6 років тому

      Tito D I already said that blockbusters have art, I seen a lot of them. I love a lot of them. I hate artistic movies though. I couldn't really give you an example. My favourite movie's of all time is the minority report and Paycheck. Because 1. There not artistic films the critics praise 2. They have amazing storylines. 3. Decent action scenes 4. And great plot twists and characters. That's what makes a movie. Not telling stories through critical viewpoints.
