I was looking for a 2022 Road Glide ST. A New York City dealer offered one at $8K over MSRP. I mentioned that the MSRP was cheaper but the salesman said they are selling at DSRP (dealer suggested retail price). I said that was nuts but he said people were lining up for the bike. I hunted around and found another dealer in a nearby suburb who gladly sold me the bike at MSRP. Point is to shop around and give your business to dealerships who treat you fairly.

@@johnhowarth8367 Crystal River Harley has a Low rider ST in stock. They've added a saddleman seat and the amp speaker set. They want 34K plus dealer fees and tax and tag. That's about 12K over list! Most of those Low Rider ST's have been pre-sold. But 12K over list is why it's sitting in the showroom.

Biggest rip off is in finance office. They told me the credit union is 4% and we will set it up for you.
I called credit union they told me 2%.
Dealer keeps the extra 2% which on multi year loan really adds up.
I bought used and said heck with Dealer.

This is true but demand is so high and supply so limited, people will buy at those prices. Dealers in my area have trouble keeping a lot in stock. If you don't buy it, the next person will.

    • @thelevelrider64
      @thelevelrider64 2 роки тому

Not really. They're not GETTING inventory to stack up. That's what's driving the prices up... lack of supply. HD is shorting the market, whether it's due to parts shortages, or intentionally, as some would have us believe. If you want to show your disapproval, your only REAL option is to buy another brand! However, you're going to discover that ALL the bike dealers' showrooms are half empty, due to supply chain issues with regard to parts... especially computer chips. One inside source tells me that a particular company has TWO WAREHOUSES filled with a particular model of bike I am interested in, each bike waiting for ONE computer chip to be shippable...

After doing some mechanical work on my Harley, I have found examples of how they made changes that save them manufacturing money but cheapened the product, that's just greed. I wouldn't mind the opposite, I'd gladly pay more if they spent more to raise the quality. BMW is looking good.

Was at a local dealership a few weeks ago to order/buy a bike. They didn't have one so they wanted to look into trading for one or ordering it which I was down for.
MSRP $19.5 or so, come back with an OTD of $26.5. Back running that math, they wanted between $3500 and $4000 mark up.
Made them an offer of MSRP, no prep (they tried that), minimal doc, mandatory taxes, etc.... told them a dealership an hour away already made me that offer. They told me to take it maybe thinking I was bluffing. I wasn't.
Called the other dealership on the way home and put a deposit. Bike will be here in a few weeks.

So when buying a bike or car (or anything really). People are always afraid to tell the salesman that they like that one. The trick is to ALWAYS tell him you like it. In fact reiterate the fact. I love this one. Take up as much of his time as you can. Seriously. Then tell him again how much you like that one. Then you break it to him, that you just don't want to pay that much. They crap their pants. They've spent all this time with you. They can't just let you walk out. They are super stressed at that point. They'll call a manager over, and he'll call his manager over. As long as you have the means to pay for it (credit or whatever) They'll bend over backwards to sell you that bike. And if they don't, you let them know that you're going to go to another Harley dealership, and you'll be back. They love to hear "I'll be back" haha. It works everytime

I found what I wanted elsewhere at a dealer who had the price advertised on their sight.

Used bikes are getting tough to find as well, at least where I live. I was in a HD dealer (Electra Glide Ultra) and a Yamaha Dealer (Royal Star Venture) looking at used dressers for sale and both only had one in stock.. The HD salesman told me they can't keep them and its getting a bit harder to find good ones to sell on the the floor. I live in Northern VA and happened to be in the area of Winchester VA so I was looking at what they both had. I might go back to the Yamaha dealer and free up some floor space by taking the Venture off their hands. It was in immaculate condition and 20k miles on it. I will be wise though and look at some more stuff before pulling the trigger on any used bike rather than the first two I've looked at.

The number of dealerships in your area also plays a huge role in prices also. I'm lucky enough to live in a very large city in TX and there are plenty of HD dealers to choose from. The competition to get your business is fierce here, and the dealerships that isn't trying to empty my pockets always get my business. Service on the other hand, is where I feel like I'm being taken advantage of. They all get you pretty good, and putting my bike on a trailer to get a cheaper rate just isn't worth it.

You are right. Over the past 5 years I bought 6 bikes from Gator Harley. Back in last August I ordered a 21 FLHTP. I called them after 6 weeks and said where's my bike. They said woops. we forgot to order it. But we'll get right on it. 6 weeks later, where's my bike? Oh, we waited too long so we'll have to order a 2022. 8 weeks later, your bike came in and we're only going to charge you 5 K over list. I told them to keep it. And bought locally. They've lost me as a customer for good.

MSRP, surcharge, supply, demand, blah, blah, blah! You're forgetting a key component that many Gen X-ers value which dealers have seemed to let slide...dependability and customer service. I've only been riding for three years. My first and only motorcycle was a HD. It just stranded me in the desert for the third time. I had it towed to the local HD dealership for service and told the service guy I'd been standing around in the desert in 103°F for almost two hours waiting for the tow truck. When I asked for a bottle of water I was pointed at the vending machine in the customer lounge that wanted $1 for a 25¢ bottle of Costco water. When I stuck my dollar in the machine it told me "sorry, make another selection." I decided right then and there to buy a new bike and I didn't even consider a Harley. I didn't even wander around the show room floor and sit on a couple of bikes while waiting on my wife to pick me up. Their high prices, poor customer service, and the fact that I can't depend on my bike to get me to work let alone through a weekend trip to the beach has driven their key demographic to a competing brand.

If you are getting an automatic trans because you think it will be easier for low speed handling, you are mistaken. With the auto trans you have to modulate the rear brake against the throttle. That's much more difficult than using the clutch/throttle and rear brake. It can be done, but it will take many, more hours of training than learning to use the friction zone.

Highway robbery. It’s not supply vs demand. You can go to a dealer and order a new car or motorcycle in these instances and get one for msrp. Yet to get one that’s on the floor ready to roll they want extra. That is bs. The housing example is poor also. If you list the house for what it’s worth, which most due when you get people offering over is when the current owner gets everyone into a bidding war. No one is going out and going I’ll give you 700k when it’s listed for 500k. It’s 8 people offer asking price then the owner is going tell them to give me their best offer. I just hope people remember what these dealers are doing when the market tanks.

We haggled, I even asked for my Senior Discount', to which I had to endure their chuckle at my bold suggestion, but I refused their so called best deal. What was that may I ask? A surcharge of an additional 900 buckaroos. I said 'NO' to that and opted for an 8 year olde bike from a nice couple who switched hobby to horses. As everyone knows, there are far fewer Indians available than there are HD's. HEY!, they only charged me a little over Blue Book Market Price. Because it was so well cared for, I took it. I don't do 1000 mile ventures to bike rallies, just 50 to a 100 mile loops. Enjoying the 'used bike' and I have a few buckaroos left over for some add-ons. Rear crash bars, front & rear bumpers, cup holder, GPS, TPM gauge, and sufficient funds to stop along the road for a fish dinner from time to time.
