The arcade's music being short is not an emulation issue, it just sounds like that. allumer couldnt figure out how to get waveform audio working on Seta's hardware just yet, so they decided to just make the soundtrack and sample it. and yeah, like 85% of the OST got cut because those sampled tracks took up a massive amount of memory. the vocal track in the fm towns version is called Fantasy of the Heart (心のファンタジー ) and it's probably jist a track included in fm towns dev kits that allumer just decided to use cause they thought it fit, i'm not sure what the reason was, but this song is also on fm towns viewpoint, though it's probably not actually used in game like in Blandia. Anyways, thanks for this episode mark, appreciate ya
It's a similar issue to Twin Eagle and Rezon, which also have sampled BGM in short loops. I have played TE on an actual PCB, and it's the same story as MAME. Blandia and these two use Seta's X1-010 sound chip. Daioh does as well... its music tracks are full length, but they're wavetable audio. X1-010 can play 8-bit PCM samples from up to 1 MB of external ROM. 1 MB? That sure doesn't go far.
Wow, seriously? Allumer we're really half arsed weren't they! Not bothering to fix the audio on their own game then using a pre-made track on the port. Wow.
Serious? hahaha. That is really half arshed. Howover sound emulation was marked as perfect, but should been issues with graphics. But.... same is seen with "PuzzLoop". The title screen graphifcs "glitches" is present on the original unemulated arcadeboard as well..... Cool game throught.
If I recall correctly, Blandia was released on PS4 / Switch as part of ACA (Hamster bought the rights of all Allumer games). But I wonder if there was any emulation improvements over MAME's offerings.
Not only in game titles. I worked for a company that made gauging machines, and while looking at the electrical drawings for one that had been built by our Japanese subsidiary I found that the machine was to be used for measuring clankshafts, not crankshafts!
So after people discovered copper, they battled for gold. And men of power battled themselves instead of pushing the peasants to do it. Very interesting plot.
I could immediately tell exactly what's causing the PC-98 port to run so poorly. It's the PCM sound effects. Every time a sound effect plays, the game pauses until that sound effect is done playing. That means the PCM is being processed through the PC-98's CPU.
I have plenty of fun with this game, even with its many flaws; my favorite fighter here is Junne, she's the best character aside from the main boss, for sure!
I used to play this occasionally at a coffee shop with one of those arcade compilation consoles set up. Was a little fun for a short while, but I never cared for the sprite work or gameplay. I tried out the pc98 cd version on Neko project 2 when I came across it some years later, and could only get it working by using an HD image in conjunction with the CD image. I don’t remember it being unplayable, but I only ever tried it once, so it couldn’t have been that great. I do think I was able to pull off all the moves, however
I probably should have added the caveat that it was all the moves I knew about, which wouldn’t have been many, lol. And, yes, I usually just test against a dummy player 2, which isn’t the same thing as pulling the moves off in a real game
I tried this without knowing anything because I thought the name was hilarious. I soon figured out it was a follow up to Gladiator which I did enjoy in the arcades back in the day so it was a pleasant surprise. I fire Blandia up every now and then to this day. Not great but something about it keeps me coming back

Apologies if this isn't the right place to put this here, but is anyone able to make a list of all the end quotes spoken from the fighters, both winning and losing, and including the unplayable ones?
Who decided the a name like that was a good idea 💀 Heck if the devs at Meguro didn't pick it up, then the localizers should have, why not Brandia, Burandia or something
@@gouravchakraborty9801 But still why didn't the localizers adapt the name to anything else? Not familiar with this one at all, which is great! Some thoughts as I experience this gem for the first time: 1) Blandia? That sounds like someone making fun of another game. 2) The nipples on the statues... is that unusual for a Japanese game from the era? 3) Who the hell thought it was a good idea to have those columns in the foreground of that stage?!? 4) Its amusing how the developers came up with a way for the female characters to move in a way that always gets their thongs in view.
do did the red hair girl have a "sexy" pose too when she wins ? also a minor novelty the damage fills up there bar instead of starting s full bar and counting down ....
Man, the arcades really were flooded with 2D fighters in the early 90s, weren't they? Unfortunately this looks like one of the more mediocre options, which explains why it got lost in time and only got a couple of Japan-exclusive ports.
Please can you or a viewer tell me a Japanese store that will ship to the UK. I want to get hold of a pc engine. I prefer not to go through eBay/Rakuten. They seem really expensive. I’ve seen Japanese book off and other thrift stores sell them for around £40 uk currency. Unfortunately I can’t see the ship .Yet eBay charge £100+ which is more than I’d pay total in import and tax duty.
No Japanese stores ship overseas besides Amazon and the prices on there are crazy. Best that you use a 3rd party helper site to place bids on Yahoo Auctions.

You know a game is obscure when it only ever got ported to two Japan exclusive computers.
That was the longest backstory I’ve ever seen in an arcade game.
If I recall correctly, Blandia was released on PS4 / Switch as part of ACA (Hamster bought the rights of all Allumer games). But I wonder if there was any emulation improvements over MAME's offerings.

Never heard of this one. Bland version of Grandia?
I like the music in the end
That's from the FM Towns release.

I had no idea Blandia came out to consoles. I only played the arcade version.
Technically those aren't consoles.

Hey, you may have a point there. I didn't think about that. I should try the game aging but with different sound configuration.
This is the game that got me into digging around rom data, due to its infamous "unused sprites" haah
Never heard of this game. Enjoyed the ending song
That was from the FM Towns version.
Game looks great fun tbh, would love to have a physical version of this for a modern console......to bad that will never happen 😅
Thanks Mark 😊👍🏼
I never heard of this game.
Looks interesting, I'll have to check it out sometime.
There are a lot of games that have had some really bad names, but I still think this is one of the most unfortunate.
Somehow does describe the game as a whole, the roster's so generic it hurts 💀

It was possible to pull off some moves on the PC98 version but only if you set up two players and the other didn't attack

Difficult to emulate in all it's versions. A really true obscure gem. I usually play to the Arcade one.
Indeed. I lucky to own a real FM Towns PC but my copy of the game is a CDR 😅
The arcade version looks so much better than the other two😅
This game is perfectly named.
Yet another one i didn't know about!

Thanks for the advice but it seems that this game is very poor on the PC98 because it loads in the PCM audio samples all the time.
Понятно)
I guess it makes sense that the PC98 port would be converted from the FM Towns version, since they're both x86.
And it uses the 9821 256 color mode.
Name of the song that plays during the comparison?

That's quite a list. I wonder if there's a gamers wiki out there thag might list them?
looks a little bit like a Soul Calibur Demake ^^
Aw jeez! It's Doinkles again! (forgive my selective dyslexia).
Lol, no worries.
And here I thought you were just being mean to Grandia for a second.
Some fighters punch the air as a celebration. She wiggles her legs. 4:39
Fun how they twist the female character body to show her butt everytime she is going backwards but they don't do that to the male characters.
They know what the lads want to see. 😅
One of the few fighting games to be never released on consoles.
Technically it was as the Fujitsu Marty runs most FM Towns games 👍
A bit of teabagging there. 3:36
