1. Driven by an idler wheel under the platter and in contact with the edge. As the wheel rubber frays, rumble might increase. 2. Ceramic cartridge. High in treble but low in bass. Has to be connected to an amp through a phono pre-amp through a high impedance, in order to equalize the sound. This was a budget record player launched in the mid 80s. Was my first record player. Served rather well till i upgraded to Philips 242 ( magnetic ) later on. Then of course, tapes, CDs and mp3 came and they are now in retirement.
