- Learn about Twelve Foot Ninja guitarist Stevic Mackays' ten plus year journey with Variax that has resulted in Shuriken. With a longer scale length, advanced Variax® HD technology and an assertive body shape, the Shuriken Variax guitar is the result of intense collaboration between Line 6, Yamaha Guitar Development, and guitarist Steve “Stevic” MacKay of Twelve Foot Ninja. Designed for heavier or more technical styles of music, Shuriken Variax delivers exceptional playability, clear and tight tone-plus the unrivaled versatility for that Variax HD modeling provides. Now I may be wrong, but it sounds to me like Stevic's been busy.
How busy has he been pal..?
😄
Busy like a cat?
"Tha kaind of musik tha I wroait" Austrialian accent is awesome.
cheers mate
NOICE
The Variax modeled the accent too. He's actually from Boston.
He's been a very busy boy ;)
nice finally a modern styled variax
take my money!
I'm sticking with the JTV-69
I;ve been busier than a Variax shuriken tuning
I got a podxt live a year ago. Then last month I started listening to Twelve Foot Ninja. I guess the algorithm got perfectly what video to suggest to me lol
Stunning guitar! I LOVE my tobacco burst Variax standard, but that is just awesome!
now the missing link between Helix and Variax would be a GV(ariax) Wireless that works with the integrated batterie of the Guitar.
Kydos for forging your ultimate ax on Variax platform! wish i was at NAMM this month to try on the 27" scale, but we're staying away in droves 😉
if line 6 is still serious about variax... perhaps selling the variax guts as kits for modders.
ken masters That would be AWESOME!
the variax guts are enormous, requiring a ton or routing and limited placement, making most of the body just hollow to accommodate. that makes it difficult to fit in anything that isnt purpose built.
I just got Shuriken 2 months ago and I have been able to put it down. I have some really expensive guitars that cost 3 times as much as the Shuriken and I;m not playing them. The guitar is so comfortable to play sitting and standing. The neck is the best playing neck I have ever played and I'm not kidding. I can turn this guitar into so many other instruments. It doesn't have a mandolin setting, but if you tune all the strings up in the Variax a full octave you can get the sound and use a 12 string acoustic or 6 string and it gets close enough if you need it. See I play Country and need the banjo and dobro to make some killer songs and with the Helix I can change guitars and amps with a stomp of a footswitch. I never use the ultra high gain settings in the Helix for my music, but use them for fun. What a great combination with the Shuriken and Helix.
I loved my JTV59, but had issues with the modeling using high gain. It had this hollow, "Whoomp" to it, when palm muting. I always assumed it was cause of the bridge type, cause I never heard the same issues from people who had the JTV89. I stopped playing guitar after a hand injury, but am getting back around to playing again. Sadly I had to sell it to pay bills, but am seriously considering a Shuriken down the road.
same problem with GTV-89, I don't know how Stevic does not have this kind of problem...
Someone told me that using heavier gauge strings would fix the problem, I did and although the situation seems to have improved on the 6th string, now I have problems on the 4th string...
I NEED that guitar now.
Cornél Botha there is the variax standard which is cheaper build than JTVs, the firmware however is 100% identical.
StickySprite what's it called and how do I buy it plz
go to line 6 website, go to products, click on the guitar you want, click buy, click on one of the providers that will sell it and buy it
Does anyone know if there is a firmware update to the previous Variax guitars (specifically the JTV-89F) that fixes the palm muting issue? I love my Variax but for the type of music I play, when using any of the digital down-tunings, it's basically unusable. Palm muting sounds terrible.
I had the whole set up back in 2006 floor unit variax & software then suddenly they stopped supporting my mac for like 2 years. I never looked back I loved my rig and they just dropped the ball
Quick Question: can you use this with every kind of amplifier or do you need special equipment?
(I have a Line 6 POD hd500x, would it work ?)
i hope they make variax with hallow or semi hallow body like gretsch.. that will be interesting.. for me at least.
Nice, but still waiting for new electronics. Based on what they've done with the Helix I'm excited to see what the next generation Variax will sound like.
looks killer!!
Why show a Variax 300 when referencing a 500 in the video? Very different models.
order placed!!
Take my money! Also, where could I find that instrumental version of "Deluge"?
So the big question is... is there a left handed model?
William Cranke this is the part where Nelson from the Simpsons comes up ... "HA HA!!"
Plenty of left-handed people play right-handed guitar.
Yes but the tuning stuff with the variax wouldn't work upside down. At least that's what I'm led to believe.
The only drawback I can see with Varix guitars for live performance is having to be hardwired. I sincerely hope some type of wireless connection can be developed.
I don't think Stevic mentioned in this video that this guitar is a baritone (27" scale length).
it was mentioned in the intro video to this video haha
Chris ACT
Not a baritone just 27" scale
OK, fair enough. I just watched another video on it where he says it's tuned to E. I had just assumed with the amount of drop tuned stuff Stevic does, and the 27" scale length that he was probably tuning down but I guess he's just using the Variax tuning to do all that.
If you used the mag pickups it would be pretty much a baritone but the line 6 brain makes it whatever you set it to.
He tunes the strings to normal pitch (EADGBE) then he does the alternate tuning(s) using the digital Variax trickery. So the mag pickups give you standard tuning.
Cool guy and I realize this was his design, just wish Line 6 would make a decent looking guitar to go along with their technology. Have yet to see a Variax model I like the look of
Nice design!
Well, someone's been busy it seems !
I've been busier than a cat baring shit on concrete!
I need one. Now.
Extremely interested in purchasing one of these, however I have a question Line 6... what does this 27" scale Variax come tuned to? I know stevic uses drop D and your system is supposed to be Standard down to an octave below. So what's this come in stock and if I had mine tuned to drop C, could I then go to drop C octave below?
J A Y I believe it comes tuned to standard. And yes, the engine basically takes it to an octave above or below whatever the guitar is physically tuned to. For example, I'm tuning mine to D standard so I can go to the octave below D. So you'd be able to get into proper bass ranges!
When's the release date?
All this gear is really cool with loads of options! How is the bassist managing??
Vishnu Pillai lots of therapy
A variax bass
Now imagine if you could do this with Bias...a great concept nonetheless.
when are you going to release the 7 and 8 string version?
Gustavo Rojas they don't need to?
Is there going to be a " Shuriken Bass Guitar " next ???
I've been waiting for a new Variax model!..... but, uh...... hmmmmm..... I'll have to let this one grow on me for a little bit. Kind of went to the extreme with with one.
where can i get a left handed one? been searching all over
Jake H I've never seen one either, might have to go to the web site and user forum I've got quick replys from their support team with a Helix rack I bought, they have to have made some, or could help you out I'm sure, good luck!!
What's wrong with the English link to the manual to this guitar ??? Where is the link to purchase this guitar ???
Sorry, there was an isuse...please try it now line6.com/data/6/0a020a3f2b0158828f020762b/application/pdf/Variax%20Shuriken%20Pilot's%20Guide%20-%20English%20.pdf
Still the link for the manual lol - just go to americanmusical.com ... they let you make no interest payments for 12 months for pretty much anything. I think this guitar will work out to be like $114 a month or something like that. And depending on where you get it shipped, it'll most likely arrive at your door in 2-3 days.
However, since this comment is from 1 year ago, I'm sure you've received the guitar by now - if so, what are your thoughts? I'm looking at a possible purchase soon but I wouldn't mind hearing more feedback before I take the plunge.
Does this guitar have MIDI capability? That would be awesome.
I don't think it does
A neck humbucker would suit well on this guitar... Maybe for everyone else?
I've been wanting a Variax for a long time. Just haven't pulled the trigger. Guitar is not my primary instrument - just use it for writing songs. In that sense, I'm not bothered by the issues purists are. To me it's like using a synth for piano instead of a real piano.
Anyway, this Shuriken is definitely appealing. I cannot play anything close to what Stevic plays, but I love the versatility (and looks) of this ax. I was wondering why there is no tremolo on this one. Then I realized that besides the fact that it would likely require a locking nut (not always a great thing) you could probably just use an expression pedal or program one of the guitar's knobs to achieve a similar effect.
I think I heard Stevic say that this is a baritone but he strings in standard tuning? I'm wondering why it's baritone if he designed it. Seems like he'd have to change the nut (not sure on that) and of course have the guitar set up for the different strings. Let me know if I got that wrong.
You can play with standard strings, and in standard tuning on a baritone guitar, with no issues. They just handle heavy gauge strings, and lower tunings better then a standard guitar.
Truth be told, the fact that he designed it with the digital detuning, and his physical strings are tuned to standard, I don't see the point in making it a baritone. Maybe he just wanted to leave options open for others buying. Idk.
A new guitar developed in California, presented by an Aussie guy, who plays Ninja music and who wears Canadian-woodcutter-style beard and checked shirt : then, maybe you should add "cosmopolite" in the description of the product :)
Did they fix the palm muting issue?
Yes, they published a new firmware a couple of years ago. I tried it on mine and it works decently now (not the beeeeeest but much better than before)
Still feel strange, I don't like it, the pinch harmonics are strange too
Stevic has no problems with his set up through the Helix,
What would one of these cost?
1,400
Tiny Rick that's not bad Tiny Rick, get schwify
The first Line6 product besides the helix and the wireless system that I would buy,wow
shut up and take my money!
1.4k worth
busy
line 6 made a lot of moolah, dinero, pounds, $$$$ ...perhaps they can lower the prices on some of the products so us lower classes can at least afford one? yes?
not saying Line 6 is on the same level as Ferrari... but Ferrari has made a ton of money too... you don't see them releasing a $25,000 car for the lower classes. Making things more affordable means quality suffers and tarnishes the brand's name and image. Just save up your money.
@peter g haha have they not turned things around with Helix and everything else that's come out since? Everyone loves to jump on the bandwagon and bash Spider... but aside from that, who else does anything close to Variax? I get people coming up to me after gigs all the time asking how I get such a clean acoustic tone or how did I get that 12 string sound, or switch to lowG with a 6 string electric. Shuriken and Helix together is pretty unbeatable if you play a variety of styles in a cover band or like to work some acoustic or jazzy parts into your metal. I don't even bring an amp to gigs anymore... Shuriken into my Helix, Helix into FOH, done. With all the 3rd party IR's on Marketplace, I don't really need anything else. But use what you like and what works for you.
@peter g fair enough
id like to see this guy actually play guitar for once, rather than using the thing that could make anyone sound OKAY at guitar. Than i might buy your goofed up guitar. Till then its a novelty and shall live and die as such.
not at all how the tech works....
uhhh it's not a "guitar hero" guitar dude... you still need to play it, and write music with it regardless of altered tuning, scale, or effects. This just gives you more options. I've written riffs in open tuning and then had riffs in standard tuning follow, outside of a double necked guitar, there's not really anything else out there that allows you to quickly alter tunings with the tap of your foot. Point is, the guitar doesn't write music for you or make you sound any better if you're a shitty player to begin with... it just opens up a lot more windows of creation if you're a good enough song writer to utilize it's purpose.
Ahaaa Variax has been around for awhile dude not quite a novalty, hasn't died yet,you can make music with a stick and a log if you got talent, there is nothing in music that instantly makes you a better musician unless your millyvinilly, and win a Grammy by lip syncing we all know how that turned out.
