Hi gents - now that I'm lucky enough to work for G&M who own Benromach I can give you some clarity with confidence. Firstly, there is definitely NO colouring added. The new make spirit destined for the 10yo is matured for 9 years in a combination of first-fill Bourbon casks and first-fill Sherry casks, before being married in first-fill Oloroso casks for the final year. The 15yo just stays in those Oloroso casks for another 5 years. From day one of taking over the distillery in 1993 (although distillation didn't start until 1998 as the building was just a shell) G&M have a strict first-fill only policy. The Peat Smoke is just matured in first-fill Bourbon casks and it's a little younger, hence the colour difference. The 'wisp' of smoke in the 10yo (roughly 12ppm) is a deliberate hark back to Speyside whiskies of the 1950s/60s when distilleries had their own malting floors and as such all had a light smokiness which has disappeared over the years. Before I started with G&M I already loved Benromach (as my 100 Proof video will attest!) and I love hosting tastings of the range as the difference in styles between the 10yo, unpeated Organic, Peat Smoke and everything in between is so varied and interesting!
Thanks Ben! Been wondering how you've been. Glad to hear you're working at G&M! Really impressed with these two Benromach's and looking forward to trying more.
I am reviewing The Benromach Peat Smoke (2008) when I share my photos and video of my visit to the distillery so I am comparing notes with other Whisky Tubers. I wish they indicated WHERE they got the peat from, whether it is from Speyside or they imported it from one of the islands. From a neck pour I got more ash and bowling alley rented shoes.
Cheers guys, excellent review. I picked up a bottle of the 10 year old a couple weeks ago and I have heard and read good things. After watching your review I guess I'll have to open this one real soon. Slainte!
Very late commenting on this video but have you guys tried the 10 cask strength ? Great stuff. Just stocked up on 3 bottles of batch 1 of the CS. For $65 it's a good value alternative to Springbank 12 CS.
I'm a bit of a Benromach fan. Love the 10 but the 15 is well worth searching out. Awesome dram. Not tried the peated yet but have one in the stash . . . The 10/100 proof is also excellent.
There are many I haven’t tried, but Benromach isn’t even considered by me.. Watching this one puts Benromach on my todo list. (And thank you for the synchronised Horst Luening moment at 12:30 😏)
Great video Scott and Bart. Benromach is a fantastic little range. There is the 3rd 'Organic' in the 10yo range as well. The Peat Smoke is a great entry into peat without the big Islay monsters intimidating the newcomer. I rate it with the Ledaig 10 and BenRiach 10 Curiositas as nice entry peated whiskies 👍
Been looking for a replacement for the OLD Highland Park 12 (not the new Thor thing) taste spectrum. Sounds like the peat level might be close with a nice sherry/honey. Agree?
I tried a couple of BenRomach at my local store last weekend at a BenRomach sale. There were several very good and interesting offerings! I love how they try lots of different stuff with their whiskies :)
I have the Benromach 10, Imperial 100 proof. It is amazing! My new favorite scotch. To me it is a perfect balance of smoke and sweet. I will be trying others from Benromach.
Enjoyed every Benromach I've ever had. If it's available, I would also highly recommend you guy try the Benromach 10 100 proof. It's their cask strength release (around 57% ABV, English 'proof' is very confusing).
I just picked up a bottle of the Benromach Peat so went back in time to watch this video again. I forgot that this episode almost qualifies as an ASMR video and it almost lulled me to sleep. If you haven’t heard of ASMR, search ASMR lip smacking in UA-cam.
hello, great review! If you don't mind helping me with a decision. Im debating if I should get the Benromach 10 (standard bottling.. not cask strength) or a Lagavulin 8. They are both the same age. Which would you say is the all around more enjoyable malt? Thank!
Big fan of Benromach! Glad you guys are trying these. The 10 year Imperial Proof and 15 are also great. I'm pretty sure Benromach doesn't use any coloring in their whiskies - they are pretty traditional when it comes to their whisky making. They also only use first fill casks which is pretty unique. Funny enough, the Peat Smoke is actually peated to a higher level than your typical Laphroaig and Ardbeg, around 60ppm. But its not an Islay peat so that may be why it doesn't taste as peated. Just wanted to share a bit of info because Benromach is definitely worth exploring. Cheers!
Did the Benromach Peat smoke make it into the peat strikes back? For some reason, I feel like the Old Ben-Romach Peat-Smokey should have been in the first movie... But, like Bart said at 13:19 "The Maltiness is stronger in this one". 😄 (This would make a great T-Shirt Slogan BTW) Oh, and Bart, when you walk into your co-workers office (the one using oils) the feeling that you are getting all over is called..... Humidity! 😀
Thanks for the shout out, I got my Whisky hat (#95) in the email this week, it was promptly put to use on my new Springbank 13 Green. I have been curious about Benromach, I would have never guessed it had a a light peat smoke with it. They must think it is so good, you would be tempted you could drink straight from the bottle ;). Curious was the peat/smoke flavor from the cask or the malt? Sounds like both the sherry and peak were light/gentle influence on the 10.
Question for the STDs: I was looking at Patreon and the description of your pledging levels says “$1.00 per post.” Does that mean every time you post a new video, you get a dollar from me? I’ve not seen this sort of pledge before. Please explain so I can make the appropriate selection. Thanks,
You can select $1 a post or $2, $3 per posted video. Once you select the pledge per video amount the next screen will ask how much per month you want to pledge. So you can select $1 per post with a $1 month max if you like, or $1 per post with $10 per month max. However much you'd like to help! We don't post quick hitters to patreon just our Saturday, Wednesday, and live streams generally. If we do a special show where we spend money out of pocket, then we may post those to patreon. Generally 10-12 shows per month get posted. Thanks Eric!
I see these two Scotches at one of the bigger liquor stores in Denver but they don’t stand out because of where they are placed (top shelf way down at the end). I’ll put these on the list of “to buy” and further annoy the kid who works in the Scotch area who ONLY wants to sell me Indian whiskies. I’m not ready to go Indian whiskies yet. The biggest things keeping me away from the Indian whiskies is I haven’t tried all the Scotches and Irish whiskies I want to try AND nobody seems to be buying the Indian whiskies. The Japanese whiskies blow out regularly, but the Indians on the next shelf down just collect dust. Anyway, I wandered off on a tangent there so my apologies.
I did some follow-up reading about Amrut. Sounds like an interesting operation. I never would have guessed anybody was using molasses to make a Scotch style whiskey. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amrut_(whisky)
Hahaha. Scott, you came pretty close to pronouncing my name correctly in English. Bart, your pronounciation was hilarious. 🤣🤣🤣 Just call me Carl from Belgium in the future, because my name is a real tongue breaker for English speaking folks. 😂😂😂
I am waiting for the show when Bart as a STD manga shirt! You can make it happen Bart, I know you have contacts in the manga world. Did they have on the box or bottle to Horst it up to get the most flavors?
Benromach is between $80 to $140 Canadian, 10 to 15yo and all LCBO pricing. We do have a UK importer and 700ml bottlings for Benromach. I'm good for $200 a month budget usually.

This is a wonderful insight into Benromach. Thanks for the info! You certainly have piqued my curiosity about this whisky.

bowling alley rented shoes? hmmmm....

Test it Loknes!
Benromach is releasing lots of fun expressions . Sounds the 10 night be worth picking up. Thanks for your thoughts.
definitely worth picking up.

Zelma and Lola...! Hummm!, ok. Nicely done as always Scott and Bart!!!!
thanks Luis!
I'm a bit of a Benromach fan. Love the 10 but the 15 is well worth searching out. Awesome dram. Not tried the peated yet but have one in the stash . . . The 10/100 proof is also excellent.
The 15 is here as well, just haven't picked it up due to price.
Yeah $100 is quite high compared to UK prices; about £50 - £55 here which is excellent vfm to be fair. Keep up the great reviews gents!
There are many I haven’t tried, but Benromach isn’t even considered by me.. Watching this one puts Benromach on my todo list. (And thank you for the synchronised Horst Luening moment at 12:30 😏)
I was going to see if anyone else was going to comment.
thats the result of a lot of practicing.

that is a very good comparison amflyer68 and i may even give the nod to the Benromach 10.
I tried a couple of BenRomach at my local store last weekend at a BenRomach sale. There were several very good and interesting offerings! I love how they try lots of different stuff with their whiskies :)
yes they do Sowleg!
Just picked the 10 up today. I hope it satisfies my taste for sweet peat!
nice ed4og!
very interesting destillery, great stuff! reminds me somehow of old leather armchair nosewise
Hmm, I can definitely see that.
Thanks for the Coin067 guys.
I need to send the pic next week.
With the shirt.
Thank you Joo!
I have the Benromach 10, Imperial 100 proof. It is amazing! My new favorite scotch. To me it is a perfect balance of smoke and sweet. I will be trying others from Benromach.
Excellent, thanks John.
I have never been steered wrong with Benromach... Great job on this review!
very impressed with these two.

very nice will have to look for it ruskiimperial!
I definitely support ruskiimperial...I would try to check out the Benromach 10/100 aka Imperial Proof.
Awesome 😎 love the Benromach line, if I remember the 10yr is 80% first fill bourbon cask and 20% first fill sherry cask👍
i do believe you're pretty close if not spot on.
Brent Murphy It was in the early days of distilling but nowadays it's closer to 50/50.
I only recently discovered Benromach and love it. The Benromach Organic SE is also crazy good. Cheers 👌😊🥃!
very impressed with these two.
You again? Why do I keep running in to you whizkee couch? You aren’t following me are you?
Eric Schwab ... stalking 😉. Cheers 🥃!
Cheeky! 🥃😏
Got a couple of the Benromach's on my wish list on Master Of Malt. Selma Hayek -- dancing with the snake scene in Dusk Til Dawn -- oh momma!
oh my, that is a good one.
I just picked up a bottle of the Benromach Peat so went back in time to watch this video again. I forgot that this episode almost qualifies as an ASMR video and it almost lulled me to sleep. If you haven’t heard of ASMR, search ASMR lip smacking in UA-cam.
haha, yes the new mics!
The cask strength 10yo is as close to a Cambeltown as any speyside whisky I've tried.
nice, thanks Jimmy Leg!

Scotch Test Dummies

Just a little fun
LAST!!!!
Cheater! 😂
Had some Benromach 10 last night, while playing a board game! The scotch was great, the game, not so much.
thanks flipmoviemaker! Scott agrees

2nd... the 10 yo is f****** awesome... and the 15 yo is even more awesome than awesome... don’t know the peat smoke... never had that one
know one else describes it being in there...I had faint hints...but that could be my peat head. Bart

Scott almost gave you a Velvet Elvis. Buy the Indian Whisky when they reduce the price
Yeah, the Indians are a bit pricey surprisingly. Amrut (4 or 5 different ones) and two Paul Johns is all I’ve ever seen.
I did some follow-up reading about Amrut. Sounds like an interesting operation. I never would have guessed anybody was using molasses to make a Scotch style whiskey.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amrut_(whisky)
Scotch Test Dummies I forgot to ask, but a velvet Elvis isn’t good is it? Lol!
Scotch Test Dummies Somebody I know said they thought Amrut tasted more like rum than whiskey..........
Hahaha. Scott, you came pretty close to pronouncing my name correctly in English. Bart, your pronounciation was hilarious. 🤣🤣🤣 Just call me Carl from Belgium in the future, because my name is a real tongue breaker for English speaking folks. 😂😂😂
I'll work on it. Scott 😉
mmmmmmmmmm......Whisky! 😀
we like the way you talk vrich!
I am waiting for the show when Bart as a STD manga shirt! You can make it happen Bart, I know you have contacts in the manga world.
Did they have on the box or bottle to Horst it up to get the most flavors?
Barts manga shirt will be made in Taiwan for $2.
Scotch Test Dummies 100% nylon too for the full sweat lodge effect.
of course!
Shhhhh! good cheap Scotch does not exist anymore
Benromach is between $80 to $140 Canadian, 10 to 15yo and all LCBO pricing. We do have a UK importer and 700ml bottlings for Benromach. I'm good for $200 a month budget usually.
Christopher Molloy Have you tried Glen Scotia Double Cask?
Second!!!
Boom!
