A dream can become reality, as Euskatel-Euskadi's Iban Mayo found out today when the talented 25 year old Basque climber from Igorre rode to a prestigious solo stage win on L'Alpe d'Huez. "To win here was a dream that became reality today. I was able to profit from attacking at just the right moment."
Mayo, who was 40th on GC, 6'11" behind Maillot Jaune Richard Virenque at the stage start in Sallanches this morning, leapt to third on GC, 1'10" behind new Maillot Jaune, four-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Mayo's time up l'Alpe was 39'06", short of Marco Pantani's record of 37'35" set in 1997 or Armstrong's 38'01"of 2001.
Armstrong already knows very well how the dream of winning the Tour de France can become a reality. Today the reality of winning his fifth consecutive Tour is one step closer as Armstrong donned the Maillot Jaune once again at l'Alpe d'Huez. "I didn't have the greatest sensations or the greatest legs today", the four-time Tour de France winner was third on the stage and took over the lead at the 2003 Tour de France.
"It was a hard day [today] with a lot of attacks, with a long, tough day yesterday. So two days in a row like this [were hard]." After controlling the race for the second half of stage eight, Armstrong's US Postal Service presented by Berry Floor squad hit the base of l'Alpe like a runaway blue train. Armstrong said, "There's no doubt that Triki [Beltran] went too hard at the base of the climb, but he's new to the team and I guess the system isn't clear enough yet. A fast tempo is a good thing but that tempo was supersonic and that's not a good thing. Immediately, the tempo put Chechu Rubiera in trouble. We'll talk about that tonight and it won't happen again. I can confirm if it looked fast, it was very fast!"

One of the best Alpe D´huez stages ever . They are really hurting Lance A on this climb.
Thankfully I have the World Cycling Productions version of this on 5 DVD's. This was the year that Lance went through the field and the year that Tyler Hamilton broke his colar bone and won a stage anyway. At 5:33 you can see Tyler post crash right behind Lance. Thank you.
Iban Mayo flying up there, apparently he hit 25 kph for 30 secs on an 8% bit to create a gap...incredible athlete! Long live Basque cycling!
Mayo attacks like a BOSS! Turns around like a Total Badass!
EPO IS GREAT.
Una exhibicion de Mayo, simplemente colosal. Yo no subo asi ni en sueños. Txapeldun!!!!
Una gran ÉPOca del ciclismo.
Mayo goes up the Alpe like it's flat!
Amazing
funny, this wasnt even top 10 fastest climbs of alpe d'huez, seems like a lot of riders and their doctors were cautious that year.
@@eurobubble7068 Hehe yes it does look unreal!
@@eurobubble7068 down to how the race unfolded. The main group was attacking and stopping all the time as US Postal blew it all in the first ramps and there was no one to set a pace.
Im fan Vino, nothing drugs but im similar tronc. A live strong’s (don’t words a panorama) Great victory Mayo! Zorionak
Que grande iban mayo , pero qué crack!!!
Ullrich lost Tour De France this day. Could he just have finished alpe duez decently, he would have won that year.
He was unfortunately sick during this stage.
When Armstrong used to win Tour after Tour, I had a long hard time trying to convince a friend of mine that there was something odd in his performances. "You mean he is on dope?", he asked me. "You got it! I feel kinda a most far voice within me keeps on shouting that Armstrong is cheating! You'll just have to wait, and the truth will show up!" Seems like I was right.
Reading tyler hamilton book brought me here
