Shadow was way ahead of his time even in the 70's, experimenting with and successfully fusing/mixing various genres. Right here on this track in the earlier verses, before the pace picks up, you can distinctly hear elements of North American Funk superbly blended with the traditional calypso musical outlays. The guy is sheer GENIUS!!
This song like the rest of the album is rythm and percussion-soaked. Pulsating all the way through. Check out the congas throughout and especially from about 3:40 towards the end. Perfection!

YOU WILL KETCH A "GLAD"!! :) It was only in the 80's when I heard classic Ghanian Highlife, that I understood the powerful role West African musical vibes played, in influencing Shadow. But it was years later when I heard him talk about "Tambrin" music in Tobago and how much he loved it as a child, that I understood HOW that West African vibe was transplanted into his consciousness. It suddenly made sense, 'cause I too could never get enough of this Tambrin music which was played by String Bands to accompany reels, jigs and stick-fights in Best Village competitions. This musical expression was the genesis of the Dread Wizard!! Shadow did not skylark with congas AH-TALL in his arrangements so he was mad as hell in a Bucks Calypso final in Jean Pierre, when he could not hear the congas on the speakers...(I'm convinced it was deliberate) Soon after when he appeared in concert at Spectacular Forum, he spoke to the audience about that event and how painful it was.
These were the days of Shadow at his BEST under the musical directorship of Professor Art De Coteau. After the death of Art De Coteau, Shadow switched to Frankie McKintosh for a period. Under Frankie, Shadow did continue to exhibit his lyrical and melodic prowess, but it was never the same in terms of the musical arrangements under Frankie. The magic/DeZessness was gone!
