I saw it as a 9 year old. Traumatized by the boys agony..It made a huge impact on me at that time...left home teary eyed.. Really , some films do stay with u forever...
One of the best movie I've ever watched in my life. Really got absorbed fully till the end. The ending was fantastic!!. Touched the base of my heart at many moments. From INDIA.
Thank you for sharing this movie. I saw this as a child and never stopped thinking about the film. I tried searching several times but with no luck. Like you I always thought it was Australian which didn’t help my search. I cannot wait to share this with my wife. She’ll be thrilled.
I saw this movie in 1970 .At that time my nephew was the same age as Dirkie. I told him him the story of his survival and he was spellbound as I recounted the tale.Sadly my nephew passed away 5 years ago and I always wondered if he ever saw it .Last night as I watched this movie I was thinking about him.
When I first moved to Australia this came on. There is a similar movie that was filmed in Australia called "Walkabout". I watched that too and it was very very similar to this.
Thanks for posting this movie I have been looking for ages to find this movie Saw it at the cinema when it first came out Really impacted me and have often thought about the movie over the years
I'm 17 and was just flicking through the channels trying to find music and this film came on, the music on it was so captivating and it was near the end so I had to search it up and watch it.
Thanks so much for uploading this. Saw this as a kid in NZ 40 plus years ago and it always left an impression. Took years to find the name yet alone movie so thanks again
I just happen to stumble across this movie by "accident" and I must say I enjoyed it very much. Never heard of this movie and I'm not sure if it was ever shown in theatres or TV back in the US. This movie could have easily been mistaken for Australia. Good acting too. 😊👍
That's what happens with many films they don't see as very good films. And this is based on true real life events. Films like this don't get the chance they was intended to get. Many Internet Broadband tv film stations should and could show this and I do mean the full uncut version of I think is between 90 to 95 minutes. Sky Movies I've never seen this on any of there film channels. Talk Talk the same and B T also. You see there serious problem is what they don't find isn't a very good brilliant fantastic film to them it's then decided the classic won't be showing at all on tv in cinemas and not even put on Dvd and Blue Ray Discs to see in many shops world wide and also not shown on Netflix. Dirkie Lost in the Desert another great brilliant fantastic entertainment film based on real true life events and it was not shown. Not all of us know how to Download films like this as those many who do. If I knew how to then I would Download films but I don't and I can't. UA-cam is the only place to get to watch it. Again they who decide are still doing it because its what and how they see and think of it. Not on what we think and say about it. And this does look very good and it would sell into many vast amounts all over the whole wide world if it was out on Dvd. Where do we get a saying about this. When there only always lisinening to the wrong ones about the wrong choices they've made.
I was looking at story of Juliane Koepcke and her survival in the Amazon for 11 days after falling from an Airplane. For some reason, this title jumped in my head of a movie I saw 40 years ago. Glad to see I didn't imagine it. Thank you for posting.
Just watched this movie. Great little flick. Alot better movies back then not all sex and violence like today. The boy was a good little actor very captivating his best friend and him. Beautifully portrayed! 😂
Also known as DIRKIE. It stars Jamie Uys, Wynand Uys, Wilhelm Esterhuizen, Sue Burman, Jan Brujijs, Pieter Hauptfleisch, Johan Du Plooy, Bill Brewer, Jaques Loots, Heinrich Marnitz, and Eugene Erasmus. Directed, produced and written by Jamie Uys (THE GODS MUST BE CRAZY). Released in the United States in 1975 by Columbia Pictures.
I saw the movie in 1986, and I don't know why it crossed my mind today. An excellent movie with a bad ending, I was hoping for a better ending than that.
I watched this movie over 30 years ago (I must of been the boy's age), I always thought that the father got lost himself and therefore died with the boy at the end. I never realized that the truck's horn is heard in the near distance; pretty sure they all survive and go home at the end.
I have quoted many times in my sermon. 'JESUS LOVE YOU' this three word can save you from sin, death, and hell like desert. We remember first this word 'Jesus loves me' than any other sayings
Great movie and I have a recollection of seeing this as a boy...it was a powerful movie...in the credits the father of the boy is the real father of the boy...I did not know then the father directed, wrote and produced the film.
Very interesting. Never heard of this one, although I can tell you about another great (White) South African film; "Ride The High Wind" starring Darrin McGavin and Maria Perschy, circa 1966. Also known as "African Gold". I saw it a few times when I was younger and was impressed by A) the exotic location filming, B) the breezy theme song, and C) the message of the movie, which was that "love is more precious than gold". Unfortunately "Ride The High Wind" seems to have vanished and is nowhere to be found; not on UA-cam, not on DVD, and I don't know of it being aired anywhere either. Perhaps this is due to political correctness, since the film was made in white-ruled South Africa? The film was based on a novel by George Harding. Too bad--I hate to see great art lost.
Thanks for the info and you are correct---it is now on UA-cam in both versions (Ride The High Wind and African Gold. The African Gold version has more nudity and sex.) But it WAS missing for a long time. I'm glad it wasn't allowed to deteriorate.@@TrevorMoses312
I am looking for a survival film that is pretty similar to this one. It was about a boy on a plane that lost its engine and he and the pilot crashed in the desert. The boy survived, then got bit by a scorpion, then an indigenous boy and his sister found him and saved him. They were running away from their abusive father and all threee found themselves lost in the desert trying to survive. If anyone here remembers the title of that movie, please share it with me. I will really appreciate it as it was one of the best kids adventures I watched as a kid myself. Thanks!
What became of the kid and his father and the dog? How could a hyena be tamed unless a lion or a tiger or elephant or a monkey could be done ? It is a true story?
I know he’s only an eight-year-old boy … his one real chance early on was to use the gasoline to set the plane ablaze when he heard and saw helicopters nearby. I get that would have meant no movie and it is a work of fiction largely, but still.
interesting to see it again after 52 years. quite bad production and cinamatograph and the landing of the plane just to make coffee (my heating up the kettle by splasking and lighting some avgas!) and shoring down a Springbok! my God! no wonder he crashed the plane! (Although, the crash sequence was convincing. Did they really crash-land the piper?!)...

Brilliant movie. Thank you 😊 🏴
This film was remade as “Walkabout” and released by 20th Century Fox just a few years after the original
Great film, the boy's acting through all that agony was fantastic, but it should've been called:
The Passion of the Dirkie
My childhood memories!

'JESUS LOVE YOU' this three word can save you from sin, death, and hell like desert. We remember first this word 'Jesus loves me' than any other sayings
For God so loved the world ,that He gave his only begotten Son to die for our sins and gav.e us life
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
A classic film.
Saw it as a kid
That was a cool crash scene!
