    1st year mono shock, last year air cooled. Perfect mix in my opinion.

  • @scottyd2262
    @scottyd2262 2 роки тому +19

    The 1980's were the best time to grow up riding/racing MX bikes.. At the start of the 80's we got air cooled, twin shock, steel tank, drum brakes, conventional forks and seats that stopped at the base of the seat. By the end we had liquid cooled, single shock, plastic tanks, front & rear discs, upside down forks, power valves and safety seats ! Plus other things like compression & rebound dampening , removable subframes etc.. Getting any new magazine back then showing sneek peaks of what was coming on next years bikes was so exciting back then. Nothing compares to the rush that we got being addicted to MX back then.
    That amount of development will ever happen again & that's why Kaplan Cycles is one of my favorite places on Earth to me (I'm not just blowing smoke up their ass either when saying that) Keeping these bikes around in their original condition is so important to me. I can't get enough of this content !

      I couldn't agree with you more. From the late 70s through the 80s you could tell what year and model each bike was with a quick look. Now they all look the same. Experiencing the rapid advancements in dirt bike technology was fun.

      @@marvinfrenchy8754 They have lost the individuality that each manufacturer had back in those days. Remember when Euro bikes felt like Euro bikes to ride ? I own a 22 Husqvarna now and other than it still using a CroMo frame they ride very much like a Japanese bike compared to how different they were to Japanese bikes in the 70's and 80's. That's not a bad thing for me as l grew up on Jap bikes. I love the new stuff but if Suzuki, Kawasaki and Honda still made 2 strokes l would be much happier !😆👍

    Amazing bike...I clearly remember these when I was racing 125's and 250's . Once in a while the 80's got mixed in with 125 novice when only a few showed up . Those fast 80's riders gave them hell and won every once in a while . PK

    Wow, my first 2 stroke dirt bike was a 1982 Honda CR80 Elsinore, it was given to me by my neighbour, he also gave me my first Honda CT70 which is what I learned how to ride on, it was too big for me so I had to use a thin pillow as a seat at first or I couldn't touch the ground at all😂. He didn't have kids and I loved bikes and I spent my childhood over there while he wrenched on bikes (he was a bus driver by day and worked on dirtbikes/motorcycles in his spare time and he was the best mechanic out there, so much so that he STILL works in bikes for people (well he tells them what to do while using his tools since his hands don't work anymore and still rides some of the smaller bikes around his yard and the neighbourhood which doesn't sound like a big deal until you find out he is almost 100 years old). His basement was literally a shop, he sold everything from tired to tubes, spark plugs, fluids, chains, sprockets, he literally had it all and it was a one stop shop for anything bike related. When I was 2 I got out of my baby enclosure and snuck off over to my neighbours in my underwear to see the bikes. My mother went to check on me and I was gone, she went running out of the house screaming bloody murder only to find me 3 houses down the road standing in the garage door of my neighbour looking at his dirt bikes and that's where it all started. Gordy is still alive and sadly I don't go over to see him as much as I should because the man is both a saint and a gentleman, they really don't make them like him anymore. The day he leaves this earth will be a very sad day, and it's unfortunate that he never did have kids, as him and his wife have been together for roughly 80 years now, and they are the happiest people on this earth.

    I had an 86 rm 80. One of my good friends still owns it to this day. Couldn't take it when we moved from Mass to Florida. I was getting too big for it anyway.
    When you are the right size and weight for those bikes, they were a real weapon in the dirt. I rode the piss outta that lil screwzuki.
    The crazy thing is that they're producing the same basic RM 80 again today, brand new except fuel and oil injected. Seen one a couple weeks ago at Iron Pony in Columbus Ohio.
    Can't wait till my grandson is old enough for one.
    I hope the great depression doesn't happen first so I can maybe get him one.
    Teach your kids the joy of motorcycles and they'll never have money for drugs.

    Good god that is absolutely mint. I remember the mini shootouts in Dirt Bike Magazine, and occasionally Cycle World, I would read them over and over again, couldnt get enough. I have a 1980 CR80R that is comparable shape, except for the rear fender! Knowing how hard these hit when they spool up, my guess would be a loop out doomed the original. Someday I will come across an OEM one thats not destroyed! Keep them coming Senior!!!!!! A 1982 KX80 perhaps? Or the true mini unicorn; the original KTM 80 mx bike.

    80 thru 87 cr's hit like a bomb!
    My first real dirt bike was an 84 cr 60 air cooled. It was faster than my friends 86 h20 yz 80. What I like about air cooled cylinders , especially nikisil is that you can run a tight 2 thousanths piston tollerance, and make some serious power on high octane or better yet methonal. Downside is frequent top end rebuilds.
