Not really. If you talk about present time you use presens (äter). If you talk about the past in relation with the presen you use perfekt (har ätit) The second verb is supinum. When you talk about the past whitch have no relations to the present you use preteritum (åt). Preteritum also works as the present of the past, for example when you tell a story. Pluskvamperfekt (hade ätit) is the past of the story where preteritum works as the present. I don´t know if i just made it more complicated. :)
