Olesky castle. The oldest in Galicia

The oldest preserved castle of Galicia was put in Olesko even under princely times, in the XIII century. It is believed that the castle was built by one of the sons of Galician-Volyn prince Yuri Lvovich - Andrew or Leo.
The castle emulated the oval shape of the topography of the hill, had a wide courtyard, surrounded by a stone wall, entrance with a gate and a tower. These walls are partly preserved as the lower tier of the modern castle.
Subsequently, the castle was on the border between the Polish and Lithuanian empires and, therefore, several times passed from hand to hand until the states entered into peace.
In the XVI century. the castle ceased to perform a defensive function and turned into a Renaissance royal palace. It was here that the King of Poland Jan III Sobieski was born.
However, the castle and so many times changed the hosts. He was captured, liberated, handed over, sold. As long as in 1882 the funds bought in Lviv were redeemed and he was transferred to the hands of the state.
The complex of the museum "Olesky castle" also includes the Capuchin monastery with the church of St. Joseph 1739 Now there are archives of the Lviv Art Gallery named after Boris Voznytsky.
For once the castle had a small regular garden and a landscape park. However, without proper care, they died. In the process of restoration, the wild hills around the castle were streamlined, planted lawns, installed modern sculptures and planted thousands of trees and shrubs.
For all its history, the castle has been repeatedly exposed to fires and destruction, one of the greatest of which occurred in 1838 as a result of an earthquake. And in 1951, after a lightning strike, he burnt down and only in 1975, with the efforts of Boris Voznytsky, he was completely rebuilt.
Today, the reserve museum "Olesky castle" is a department of the Lviv Art Gallery. Inside the castle there are priceless examples of icons, paintings and sculptures of the 19th-19th centuries.
