    Hi from the UK, I incubated six Cayuga eggs but only hatched two who lived in our kitchen in increasingly large brooders! Unfortunately, due to my carelessness, one got killed by our terrier so I've re-homed the other at a school farm. Cayuga's are great and I'll definitely try again next year. I was told not to mix them with our hens because ducks can carry silent salmonella and we give away a lot of eggs. I don't want to.make the neighbours ill. Great video.

      The paint tray has changed our lives it made brooding ducklings very easy. We use hemp shavings in our brooders and it’s more absorbent than pine and less dusty, lasts longer. And then we would clean the paint tray out daily and the shavings would still be good and dry. Enjoy your ducklings!

    I got two babies at the end of April to live with my Pekin Three, who had unfortunately lost his mate. I got a Cayuga and a Swedish. Named them Percy and Shelby. I think Percy (Cayuga) is male and Shelby (Swedish) is female. Three is very protective of his "kids" and they are now getting their feathers and learning how to make grown up sounds. They are messy as heck, but I absolutely love my ducks!

      It has been one of the best brooder hacks for ducks. It gets so much water in it daily, all that would have been messing the shavings and subsequently molding and stinking without it. Highly recommend using it for your duck brood! ❤️

    How much heat & how long?
    How long before you let the chickens around them?

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  2 роки тому +1

      Congratulations on your ducklings! Ducklings can easily drown and feathers are not waterproof, so lukewarm. I mean ducks like tepid water when grown but since they are ducklings not too cold. Always watch and short limited swim time. As soon as they look tired or over it we dry them off and put them under their heat lamp and they finish drying off very fast under the heat. Swimming isn’t required to raise them, they just love it and it’s so cute to watch them play. Just always supervise. Depending on the duck breed and how fast they grow it can vary. Once they are weened off heat, feathered and introduced through a fence for a few weeks we release them into the flock. Chickens and ducks seem to ignore each other. It’s the other ducks that they establish a pecking order with. Our chickens ignore new ducks, it’s the older ducks that boss around the new ducks to let them know they are in charge over them

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  2 роки тому

      Thank you! The kale and Swiss chard grows like a weed for us! Requires a lot of light for large leaves, ours in shadier areas growing much smaller and slower. Our zone is very hot quickly so I have struggled with tatsoi and cabbage bolting before a big head. I highly recommend growing kale we filled our garden with it this year as free poultry feed, and we like to juice it and salads. Our lettuce and spinach is going pretty well right now but the kale and chard is my favorite and most prolific to grow, so much extras for our flock to be fed daily. We can’t grow it much longer in our zone as we have extreme summer heat. I’m going to attempt this year in a shady spot, but didn’t have much luck last year.

    My kind of girlfriend wanted a duckling for her chihuahua to play with, her roommate has a cat so she couldn't keep the duckling so she had me watch him for a night & we were going to return him to IFA but my mom's bf knows someone with a bird sanctuary and I'm supposed to bring him by 2 hours ago but I just can't do it, I've cried my eyes out 3 or 4 times since last night. I'm almost certain we imprinted on each other. I have containers handled, but what about bedding, I've been using microfiber towels because I have dozens. Will that be okay temporarily?

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  2 роки тому

      Yes that will be okay temporarily. Ducklings are very sweet but they can get messy very fast. Hemp shavings or pine shavings will be more absorbing, they get big and bigger poops very quickly lol ducks are a flock animal so they don’t like to be alone. The duckling will require a lot of your attention

      They are fairy easy to care for, they need heat lamp while young and to dunk their beak in water to drink. They can be fed duckling food or chick starter feed with some nutritional(brewers) yeast mixed in. Ducklings need vitamin riboflavin to grow their fast developing leg muscles

    • @BockBockBouquet
      @BockBockBouquet  3 роки тому

      We don’t use medicated feed because we feel there’s no need to prophylactically treat. It’s mean to prevent coccidiosis, but on small scale farms it’s not as common where as large profitable farms usually would need medicated feed. Some people choose to use it, as it is their pets and choices to make but people should know the risks, as well as advantages as I know people who swear by it and have never had any problems as well. Use of medicated feed can cause later in life for “stargazing” or wryneck to occur or a niacin deficiency because the birds are unable to create their own from the overdose from medicated feeds. Feeding non medicated feeds and adding vitamins to water or nutritional yeast to feed is a great way to give the added niacin to ducks to help prevent the vitamin deficiency & wryneck that can be so dangerous. Most chick and duck starter and grower feeds are small enough that grit is not necessarily needed yet but will definitely be needed once being fed roughages like lettuces and veggies. As without grit they cannot break down these types of food. Chick starter mash is already broken down, and if they have access to sand they will consume as much as needed. You can offer grit in a separate dish free choice or sprinkle sparklingly amongst their feed once they are at a old enough age that they are being fed healthy treats like leafy greens and grass and fruits 😊

      @@BockBockBouquet I have a bit of a dilemma. A neighbor of mine bought a $12 domestic duckling at the feed store. It was the smallest of the entire bunch. One night of it peeping and he couldn't stand it and I find this duckling in my hands the next morning. I've had this duckling for about 2 weeks now. It has the exact same color down as your Caguya ducklings. I've never owned a duckling in my life.
      I live in a studio apartment in Southern California. This is not a good place for a lonely little waterfowl with no others to associate with. I would absolutely love to have a deep bond with this duckling and watch it grow, but I would love for it even more to be in a place where it would be most healthy and happy.
      However two days ago it had sprained its leg or pulled a muscle because it won't walk on it at all and I've tried to do some research for the two weeks that I've had it to see what the proper care would be.
      However there are so many resources that I don't have access to that would be ideal for a duck to grow.
      I'm hoping that there are any duck breeders or anyone with experience that would like to adopt this little duckling. I refuse to take it back to the feed store because of the filthy conditions of the ducklings when I visited the place. I will not settle for anything less than the best home for any animal I've ever had in my care. I need Someone more capable and with the resources to be able to give it the best life.
      As of right now it has a leg it can't stand on. I've been putting it in warm water just enough for it to be able to exercise the leg but keep it elevated with no pressure. It's starting to flex its toes and move the leg a bit which I hope is a good sign. I feel that it's not growing properly because it is not getting the ideal nutritious diet that a domesticated duck needs. But most importantly I can't keep a whole flock of ducks in a studio apartment so my little duckling would get lonely from the lack of other waterfowl and I'm the only thing it associates with and I can't be there all the time. I would never forgive myself for not trying to find a good home for this duckling.
      As duck owners, please give me some suggestions on what I can do for this animal. I can't afford to take it to the veterinarian. I can hardly afford the duck food to feed it. so I've been asking online if there is anyone in Southern California that has good experience with raising ducks to take a look at this little guy and give it the chance it deserves.
      As irresistibly adorable as this duckling is, this is not the place for it. As it is still a duckling, I feel it will adapt just fine when put in the right environment with other waterfowl.
      I either want a reliable owner that will take good care of it and give it all the proper care it needs, or I was thinking of sending it to a sanctuary where they could treat the leg and put it in a comfortable enclosure with other ducks.

They can develop leg issues from the vitamin deficiency. I hope it’s not a slipped tendon and not in pain. There are a lot of people here in the antelope valley, including us that can take the duckling in. We are a rural area

      Favorite pet duck would definitely be call ducks, we have some videos on them in our duck playlist. They are a miniature bantam breed. These cayugas are super silly full of personality and definitely a favorite as well. My other favorite would be Muscovys. I will never have a flock without them. They are sweet, wag their tails when they are happy and have a pretty whisper voice as they are “quackless.” They lay huge eggs as well. Runner ducks are pretty silly although I haven’t had them in my flock in a few years now. We just got a new rare breed of ducks called East Indies and are hoping to put a video out on them soon

      They are a bit messy with their food and water but all the positives of ducks outshine that. We love having ducks with our chickens and we used to have geese as well. One thing to be aware of is male ducks the drakes can do harm to chickens if they try to mate with them, so that is something to be aware of especially if they are not free range the drakes can do a lot of harm. Recommend only keeping female ducks with chickens
