A Love Letter to H2O: Water & pH: Crash Course Biology #21

This is a love letter to water, life’s solvent, and one of the most wonderful molecules around. In this episode of Crash Course Biology, we’ll learn about how water’s polarity and hydrogen bonding help it sustain life on a larger scale. We’ll see how some water-based solutions can be acidic or basic, and examine how our bodies maintain the narrow pH range necessary for life.

Orange juice on ice? After my mother gave birth to me in the middle of a heat wave in an un-air-conditioned hospital, the nurses gave her orange juice with ice and she found it very refreshing! She continued to drink it throughout her life. I've tried it, and I agree.

I've been playing with PH a lot because of gardening. A lot of vegetables like a PH between 6.0 and 6.8 to grow the best. The native soil where I live in the Southwest is naturally around a PH of 7. So properly amending the soil means supplements that lower the PH. If you use things that increase the PH, all your plants will probably die. And then it gets even more fun if you try to grow plants like Blueberries, which like an acidic soil around 4.0 to 5.5!
