  • One of the best displays at Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD 2012) held at Waterkloof was the Spartan C-27J. The Italian crew went through great lengths to mount our onboard cameras on short notice before their last display at AAD 2012. What a magnificent aircraft with a very friendly and top class crew.
The C-27J Spartan is the perfect fixed-wing multipurpose cargo aircraft for today's diverse missions. Extremely manoeuvrable and versatile, the rugged C-27J boasts the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class and the ability to perform 3.0g force manoeuvres in the style of fighter aircraft, enabling tight turns and a rapid climb and descent. The C-27J can fly further, faster and higher than any other twin engine military transport aircraft in its class.
The C-27J features the unique capability to vary cargo floor height and continuously adjust attitude, ensuring easy loading and unloading of large volume, high-density payloads without ground support equipment and also facilitating drive-in/out of vehicles so that they can be in use immediately.
The C-27J offers significantly more capability than any other aircraft in its class. Its large flight envelope allows it to carry out the most demanding tactical missions quickly, safely and effectively.
The C-27J's structural strength, power and system redundancy provide a high level of safety and an unbeatable mission accomplishment rate. The C-27J has outstanding threat-avoidance capabilities, including a take-off ground run of about 1,900 feet at maximum take-off weight on an unpaved surface. In a tactical environment, the aircraft is capable of climbing to 10,000 ft in 3 minutes, descending from 10,000 ft in under 2.5 minutes, and can handle up to 3.0g forces. At its maximum landing weight, the C-27J has a ground roll of less than 1,115 ft.
No other aircraft in its class can offer a solution with comparable range, payload, flexibility or reliability.

When you need your MRE's to be speedball dropped on your OP by a cargo plane that could dogfight a P-51 while weighing as much as a Bradley

Acrobatic maneuvers on the edge of stall over the city with transport aircraft? Uffff... I think they are foolish.

Antrax I have no doubt about skills of Italian engineers nor planes. They are top class. I have no doubt about crew. They are pros, we can see that. But in my opinion organizer of this show is stupid. These machines are flying on the edge of its abilities. One mistake, bird strike, technical fault and you are on the roof of the family house. I can not imagine an airshow over the city anywhere in Europe. For example at NATO Days in Ostrava Czech Republic, display flying over populated areas is prohibited. Maybe they are flying like that in Roma over Terme di Diocleziano but I did not see there not an Extra 300.

For sure there is a lack of urbanistic legislation on those African cities.
If a plane, with his configuration of weights, is able to do those maneuvers, that means that exist an abbundacy of engines power. In the evenience of an engine failure, for sure, there is enough thrust to recover from a dangerous attitude.

Yes, I see your point and mostly agree, Ramstein has taught some lessons, hopefully.
The plane is amazing, coming from the earlier version the G222 which was also outstanding and the crew is the best of the best, coming from the 311Gr. Repearto Sperimentale but, as you correctly stated, anything could go wrong at any given time and probably there would little margin to improvvise.
In Europe in general and Italy in particular, safety is a major concern and sometimes it is so tight that the whole display looses some of its magic; I can assure you that over Rome, that kind of stunt, would have been impossible.

How do you know they haven't checked, how do you know if they had done it prior in the morning?
You are the tipical armchair warrior who has no clue of what's happenning around him but is always ready to judge and preach on things he has never done or seen.
These idiots are test pilots who fly around the world to perform and demonstrate the capaibility of a specific aircraft, they are able to fly in different enviroinments and are challenged on a daily basis with things you probably can't even immagine.
They might not be perfect as human beeings since none of us are, included you but I'm quite sure they know their buisness, they know what their doing and are pretty good at it too.
Why don't you bitch and whine about aerobatics display teams then, they too don't do a walkaround before their display, are they idiots, incompetent pilots or what?
Now please, just go back to your PS and stick to what you normaly do, whatever it might be that you do in your mom's basement.
