The reopening of the Western Rail Corridor would bring back trains to town.

For a bit of history on the creation of the song.
My father John McGowan came from Leitrim, born in 29, came over to England in 51-52, wrote the lyrics for this song in Handsworth Birmingham UK, he handed it to his friend Pat Wheelan who had a small recording studio in a block of flats also in Birmingham, Pat was from Wexford as far as I can remember.
My Father had a well known Irish band amongst the Irish diaspora in Birmingham, and Pat Wheelan was a member at the time during the late 80s early 90s when the song was created , the band was called City limits.
In the mid 90s onwards into the 2000s the band became the haymakers and dealt with ceili set dancing music and had at least two all Ireland champions playing in it.

So why was he writing about Kiltimagh ?

@@johngodea no idea tbh, he wrote many songs in his spare time so it was probably just something that came to mind.
On the Kevin Prendergast version, it states my father's name as the writer.

I wouldn't be surprised if the original paper he wrote it on is at my mothers, we still have his folder with his writing, so possibly could be there.

Well I'd say d first time I heard this song was Kevin Prendergast in 1990s. It sent a shiver down my spine. Back to 1980 my parents, as with probably all the Irish wished to return home. My Dad decided he'd leave Green Murphys and get a job at Moneypoint Refinery near his home in Kilrush. Sadly this never happened and he died of cancer in 1983 at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Our dream was over, but this song shook me to d bone when I heard it all those years ago. I think lots of people got alot of emotion from this brilliant song

@@johngodeaapologies it's taken me so long to reply. I missed the notification, sorry to hear about your father passing in such a way. I came back to listen to it as I feel my father's longing to be home too, it never left him. When ever we went on holiday there and we left it was very sad for him every time, he couldn't hide it.
