Is indeed the best KOF. I've owned no less than 7 different versions.
Legit.
I will say I'm more of a KOF 2002 man, but 98 is still absolutely incredible! I had no idea the DC version had different backgrounds though.
Yeah, weird, right?
@@SameNameDifferentGame Seems like such a needless change. I kinda expected better from SNK lol
I'm a KOF 98' guy. There weren't many Neo-Geo arcade games in my area in the 90's. Come to think of it, I think there was only two. But 98' was the first KOF game I ever played and I loved it ever since.
Legit.
Yes I'm a filthy casual too. You should make that a shirt my friend. Your content is enjoyable
Someone else already has! FilthyCasual.com
This was my first KOF! This would lead me down an snk fighting game rabbit hole for years!
Yes!
I recently got into KOF over the past year and from what I've played KOF '98 is definitely one of the top tier entries in the series and when comparing the original versions I think it beats KOF 2002 hands down, but when it's '98 Ultimate Match vs. 2002 Unlimited Match it's too hard to decide which one reigns supreme.
Great episode and based on what you said about the next full episode's game having a bunch of ports it seems like it's going to be quite a Shodown.
Ha, close. Not a Shodown, exactly, but... it is Special.
Kof 2002 um hands down for me. The ps2 rerelease on PS4 has bad usability due to needing the PS4 pad button to progress through menus and my PS4 stick has no button with no option of swapping the necessary button.
Something about that Neo Geo sound effect when punches and kicks land is just so satisfying to me.
Hell yes.
King of Fighters '98. My favorite in the series. Many fun hours playing it in the arcades and it was never a dull moment every time I inserted the tokens into those "Big Red" beauties Joe.
I posted this up on the Neo-Geo thread on Atariage for you. It's on post #26,777 for you to view. Thank you as always kind sir. Always a pleasure to see your works and you in action. 8^)
Anthony..
Thanks!
THANK YOU FOR TAKING MY IDEA!
You're welcome?
This was 1 DC game I wanted to get, but never got around to it...
Highly recommended, if you're a Dreamcast fan.
This was my second game on my import DC! You missed out!
Kof 98 is my favorite as well. Ultimate match 98 is fantastic!
Yes!
We all are or have been a filthy casual, no shame on that :)
The Dreamcast version does have a few gameplay tweaks, so I guess that's why they went for the different name. There are some combos that work on the DC version that don't work at all on the Neo-Geo or PS1 version due to slight hitbox and timing changes.
Interesting. That's good to know.
A great game. King of Fighters 95, 97 and 98 all fun. Notable mention: SNK vs Capcom.
I'm more of a Capcom vs. SNK guy than SNK vs. Capcom, but I like both.
Since they kept the background at 240p, I actually think the 3d Dreamcast backgrounds look pretty great. And hey, huge props for not desaturating everything into mud, which was the 3d style at the time.
True! But they should still have made it actually display in progressive!
This is in my top 10 for the MVS. I have never tried the CD ports as load times just kill me with fighting games but it was rather cool seeing those backgrounds redone in 3D for KOF 98. Thanks for covering more of the Neo Geo this summer!
It's so rad! Also in my top ten MVS, I think.
I had both of these games back in the day still have dream match on dc.
It's truly a dream match!
Another great video my friend. I still own the Dreamcast ports of KOF Dream Match '99 a.k.a KOF '98 and KOF Evolution a.k.a KOF '99. I still play the hell out of them today and while I do agree that overall I prefer the original 2D backgrounds I think the 3D ones they did for the Dreamcast versions still look really cool and like you stated, they definitely weren't lazy ports as they at least took advantage of the extra horse power of the system to make the levels stand out more along with the other newly included features.
Thank you!
This is going to be good. Can’t wait.
Cheers!
For me:
1) KOF 98
2) KOF 2001
3) KOF 2002
Legit.
You're welcome Joe. Always a pleasure to see what you offer for us to enjoy. 8^)
Anthony..
Cheers!
Great video sir
Thank you!
I think my personal favorite was '96. Something about that game aesthetically pleased me even though I find the gameplay dated. A lot of evening backgrounds. Just seems like the right time of day for a fight. And the soundtrack to that year felt particularly memorable.
I kinda like them all up to the Aruze sale. '96 is a good one.
Aruze? I remember a company called Eolith taking over for a time but I don't recall anything about Aruze.
@@YoureNotAlexander Eolith developed some KoF games, but it was during the time Aruze owned SNK (2000-2002), before Eikichi Kawasaki bought the trademarks, etc, back.
KOF 98 was my favorite in the series for a long time until 13 came out. There’s something about KOF 13 that’s just amazing to me from the artwork to the music to the gameplay it’s just the perfect KOF game to me
I can see that.
I know most people prefer KOF 98um but to me dream match 99 for Dreamcast is the ultimate port
Needs more Geese to be the ultimate version.
The only way me and my friends could get a hold of this game at the time was to sail the high seas on ps1 as it was never released in my country. Fun times. I play the KOF98 Ultimate version on PS4 now and again.
It's a great game, and any way you can play it is worth it.
Lucky to still own the Dreamcast port here
Nice.
I recently bought the NeoGeoCD Japan Limited Edition version, it's a decent game, few quirks but I like it. Faster load times than the Dreamcast version. The NeoGeoCD version is one of the better ports & one of the lesser known one too. Great video 🙂
Great review!
KOF 98 is my favorite fighting game ever!
Thank you!
I really need to get caught up on KoF, I've barely played any of them. And I had no idea Dream Match '99 was actually KoF '98 :0
You really should!
Yeah it's really weird since, as previously stated in the video, it's an enhanced version KOF '98 but since it was released in '99 I guess SNK just retitled it KOF Dream Match '99 confusing a lot of people. There was a kind of similar situation with the following Dreamcast port of the actual KOF '99 but they just dropped the '99 from the title and called it KOF Evolution as it was also an enhanced port of KOF '99.
I, too, can never hope to achieve super-technical fighting tier status...
I live with it!
I'll freaking be there dude that's saturday night?
TONIGHT!
The only downside of the KOF98 UM is the lack of arranged soundtrack, is impossible put with a edit or mod in PC version (the same issue is with LAST BLADE 2, sad, because the arranged soundtrack was magnifique).
Yeah, that's legit.
Thanks, King of UA-camrs '21!
Cheers!
This is awesome! My favorite King of Fighters is being compared and I love it. While 2002 had better visuals I still prefer the firsr dream match up. I have a copy of KOF 98 inserted into one of my MVS 4-Slot cabs in my living room. The only other SNK fighting series that I like better than KOF is Samurai Shodown. You know what surprises me is Takara (remember them?) never tried to port a KOF to the 16-bit consoles. I wonder what a Sega Genesis could do with say KOF 94 or KOF 95 with say a 40 meg cart? After seeing what the Genesis can do with Street Fighter 2 (fan fix) I bet it could put on a decent bout of KOF. Not perfect mind you but decent. Unfortunately, I can't say the same about the Snes unless a helper chip is used.
I'm a 98 guy too - respect!
nothin's gonna stop its 1998!
Huh is the lack of VGA output the reason the dreamcast Footage looks darker than the others?
I suspect so.
Hello my name is Irish. I have a question. Were you planning to do another KOF, video, Joe? If you were, then I would like to see a King of Fighters '95, video. I tell you one thing: the Game Boy version of the game, it's one of the best versions out there, way better than Street Fighter II, on the Game Boy! Thanks in advance! Have a great day, and may God bless y'all!✌🏾
I'd like to eventually, yes!
@@SameNameDifferentGame Thank you! ✌🏾
I wish Geese appeared more on King of fighters my favorite character is Blue Mary and Kyo
Hell yeah, Geese.
@@SameNameDifferentGame glad he was on Snk vs Capcom svc chaos
@@joandarc441 Agreed.
@@SameNameDifferentGame too bad KOf is underrated even when Mortal kombat 11 players like to trash talk about street fighter and Snk fighting games even tekken player's like to make fun of fighting games don't feature realism lol
I've never actually played any King of Fighters titles. I did somehow own a Dreamcast disc for one (I forgot which one) except it would never play due to being all scratched up.
I recommend them! If you like fighting games, that is.
Do a 2002 Comparison between The Original, & it's Update Version.(AKA Unlimited Match)
Definitely considering it.
A couple of questions, if that's okay:
1) Why is the DC footage so much darker than the other versions? Is that just the game? Is it because of the lack of VGA support?
2) I noticed the name card says that Ultimate Match Final was being recorded on PC; I probably missed it, but is it available on modern systems, as well?
Thank you!
That's just the game! Weird, right?
Weirdly, no. The PS2 version is on PS4, and the 360 version is still listed, but those are the original Ultimate, not the Final version.
@@SameNameDifferentGame That is super weird! I wonder why it's like that!
I'm surprised SNK Playmore is good with just having the PS2 version on PS4 and leaving everything as original, not Final...
Still the best KOF IMO
Absolutely!
Same Name Different Game I hope I'm not the ONLY one who switches the flashing off on this series.
The KO screen flashing red and white gives me a headache and I have to be careful since my sister is epileptic
Yeah, that's definitely legit.
@@SameNameDifferentGame thanks it's too much
Believe it or not I might be the first person you met who says they like playing 1 on 1 in KIng of Fighters.
Like you said in the video
excellent
Thanks!
Please, put a link to the games, in your video description.
"A link to the games"? Like... to the disc images? I don't understand what you mean.
This was the last one i spent a lot of time with before i felt the series got a bit too unbalanced and had some weird move sets and characters.
Yeah, I'm with you on that.
What about the PS 2 port though?
The one I mention at 6:44? That one?
I'd pay 60 for a remake
But would the current SNK do it justice?
Why did SNK Rename it Dream Match 99, when they port it on the Dreamcast?
Because the Dreamcast came out in 1999. In 1999, most people would have been put off buying a game called KOF '98.
Yeah, basically. But I think that made it MORE confusing, honestly.
@@SameNameDifferentGame Well yes, it was certainly confusing to me, as I only found out that King of Fighters Dream Match 1999 was a re-edition of King of Fighters '98 when I watched your video!
Hey!!
Aaron here. How do I connect with you?
For business reasons, there's an email on the channel page. Just to see what I'm up to? Follow me on Twitter, I guess? Shake_Well
La de dreamcast no hay personajes nuevos
Nope. Unfortunately.
Una lastima
Not every character though. There were some major omissions.
Who?
