I have a hand boiler, and I love the thing. The only problem I have is that I always feel like it's going to explode when I'm using it, so I don't actually use it very often. Minutes after writing the original version of my comment, I got out my hand boiler and shortly after doing so, I found that you can use it by cooling the top globe as well as VERY SLIGHTLY heating the bottom globe. We also have the same safety glasses.
