Rob has a nice unit. A little long for flexibility but he has the ability to bring a regular car. We've been fulltiming on the road for 7 years in an HDT. It's definitely not for everyone but it also doesn't really limit us. We've been to the Keys and to Alaska and volunteered in Yellowstone for the NPS. Talking to people like us would give you a more rounded perspective on the lifestyle. Oh well... maybe someday. Have a great huddle. Enjoy the road and safe travels. Aloha David

Anyone interested should go to the West Coast HDT rally in Caldwell, Idaho or the National HDT rally in Hutchinson, Kansas. BTBT, Looking forward to crossing paths in the future, great videos. Ours is not that ummm fancy...we have a 2006 Mack, got 20k invested in it, new brakes, exhaust, some other stuff. We got the bed, hitch and new tires to go, figure we'll be into it for around 30k+/- when we're done. 100 gals fresh and 100 gals holding. Her name is Ouida Pearl, and she is a work in progress. Carries 200g of diesel, gets 10mpg..still tandem..we like her...a lot.

I used to be a truck driver and I agree with everything said. I own a F350 diesel dually, and I rarely move my toyhauler, but if I were a full-timer, I’d definitely get a HDT. My fifthwheel Rv is 39’ long, and it’s already difficult to back it in my driveway with a pickup; with a semi tractor like this, the large wheelbase would definitely make it impossible to back my Rv into my driveway.

When I had my jayco I bought a cab over Mack restored it put in a air ride rear axel pulled that unit all over the country you can never have too much truck in the mountains! And you can buy a tractor with about 250K on it for a lot less than a new ton truck . I drove over the road for 30 years as a owner operator always felt good with no worries of a break down in that Mack .

Interesting.... After 30 years of RV ownership from Bumper Pulls, Class A Motorhomes, and currently a 303 RLS Grand Design Fifth Wheel RV my first thought is as safe and wonderful this big rig is that the elephant in the room is space and campgrounds, and RV parks. We have traveled all over this great country several times and we live in the Sierra Mountains. Unless we were boon-docking in the desert where does the rig fit? How do you get to stay in an Oregon State Beach Campground or anywhere else beautiful Stanley Idaho another example. You are restricted to a few "hoity toity" RV Resorts surrounded by other RV's. How many times do you pull in someplace only to find that you have to turn around then what? In the western mountains and coast this rig a complete joke and not even close to practical at least not for a place you want to be. All of that smooth as silk ride and towing experience flys out the window when you arrive at a place you want to be only to find out it's not happening. Ridiculous to me but the beautiful part of living in America you get to decide.

Thank you for talking about owning a class #8 Semi versus a camper puller 1 Ton. I find with my 1971 SeaGrave Fire Engine 🚒 I can do the service on her easy, verses my 2021 Silverado Duramax
The 2 big Fuel filter and oil filter housings are under the engine. Just slide below Fire Engine and change them. The
8V-71 Detroit takes 7 gallons of oil. Never have had to bleed fuel ins on filter changes, just fill them up with clean Diesel one at a time, start engine, she has never sputtered or needed an air bleed. The 3 air filters are on top of the engine on the passenger side, very very easy to change. The stopping power with commercial air brakes pulling the lighter 5th wheel is amazing, and the Life on brakes using it to just pull RVs will go amazing longer. Plus with sleeper you basically have a mini RV in your cab, they are made for a trucker going cross country living in his truck. You did not show the porta potty on tour of cab, he had under bed in the sleeper, which is wonderful in itself. Being able to go as you drive down the road, then just take the holding tank off and dump in the toilet at any freeway rest stop. All the extra storage in and around the cab you are never getting that in a 1 Ton dually. With these newer class #8 semi's with the Automatic transmission, your wife or partner can easily learn to drive them. I have driven lots of FD engines with Allison push button auto trans you can just put in "D" and go. The newer Allison Automatics have a push button tranny check on the little screen. There is a book manual they give you that tells you every code fault, it tells you if the level of ATF is "OK" no need to even check the dip stick.
Do still love shifting my gears in the 71 SeaGrave I will admit. 😊😊😊😊 Love that "VOLVO" with extended single axil

Good luck getting into some campgrounds east of the Mississippi with that. Been there done that with a Kenworth T6 80 and a 35 foot fifth wheel. There were a number of campgrounds that didn’t even want us in with that heavy truck. It became soo much of a hassle that we purchased a 2022 F450 and never looked back. Just our perspective of that type of truck and camper combo. We were right at 65’ in length.

There seem to be some obvious drawbacks and I think I would feel a little self conscious about driving this rig into some of the parks I've been to, but for a particular cross country RV lifestyle I would definitely consider this. Please don't take this in the wrong way. Don't know if it's a statement or an inquiry.
We hear all the time full timers making the same statement , " our schedule is so tight, don't know if ????". I'm not a full timer anymore because of health issues and my almost 91 year old mother who we live together. It's my home but it's also her home.
Certainly, you're going to have doctors appointments, dental appointments just have to be hear at a certain time , those you plan around. So all the rest is your time to relax enjoy life and the people you're around or move on. Ir say to each other , I'm tire of being here let's move on. And then decide on where to go. Somethings are seasonal those are a given . If driving along and see something on a Billboard that you want to see. You talk it over and you stop for a day or a week.
I know you get what I'm trying to say. I hope you don't take it the wrong way. Just asking.

IF it has the emissions stuff- not wise to idle for long periods of time. The filters will become an issue. Look into an apu unit that can be tied into trucks fuel system n coolant n will keep your motor warm like if you staying at a cracker barrel overnight. There is a few different companies. Just do your research.

Ran an HDT for 3 months and then moved to F450. The length was no fun in some parks out west. Had to park it away from the site some times due to space in site or had no space in my site with truck and 5th wheel. Hand to pay extra money for storage of the truck due to no room at site. Was best that we called for all reservations and told them our total length. Just was not for us

    • @skoffco

We ran our HDT set up for a year. it was always a hassle calling the campground and explaining to them what we had and if we would fit. Some campgrounds didn’t even want us on their property with that set up. The straw that broke the camels back was trying to get parked at a campground in Key West last year we decided to go with a 2022 F450. I never look back. In my opinion, having to deal with the Kenworth and a smart car piggybacked on the truck with a 35 foot fifth wheel was just too much.

@@skoffco assume that was Boyd's and they are tight. But a lot of guys take their HDT there, one actually lives there most of the year. To calling ahead, found out to never do that, because they will say no on the phone, but get there in person and point out that they allowed those big buses and they weigh more and they almost always say yes. Only time I have been told no was by a guy who hates truck drivers and he told me even if I had a pickup and he found out I drove truck for a living he would kick me off his property. Unless Ford really has changed things with newer trucks, can not believe it would out turn the HDT, I love my Ford pickup, but everything I own, except for my IH truck out turns it.

To answer his question about how the weight ratings work… you get 12k for your steer axle, unless it’s upfitted for heavy haul, that truck isn’t. Then you get 18k for each drive or towing axle. So that truck is rated for 38k for the axles. But, then you have to factor in your pin configuration for balance and then the math really starts. You can’t have more weight on an axle than it is rated for. With what he’s hauling/pulling I’d be amazed if he’s anywhere close to ratings or scale requirements. With a DD16, I hope he’s running a 3.42 rear end or lower or it’s going to kill him in fuel mileage. FYI, even with a 3.42, most rigs set for actually pulling freight are averaging 5.5 mpg. I’d guess he’s somewhere around 7-7.5. Hope this was helpful.
Oh, and the length he’s talking about, if you want to look it up is called “FMCSA BRIDGE LAW”. That the national law, but each state also has their own limits. Safe way to look at it is no more than 43’ from king pin to center point of the tandems, aka the trailers axles.

    • @jimforryjr329
      @jimforryjr329 8 місяців тому

Brian a single axle jumps to 20k for the drive and it is 34k combined for the regular tandem (17k per axle). Per steer axles, most, not all states give you 14k.

Even if you purchased a brand new Volvo plus a new Spacecraft on a semi trailer not a 5th trailer I doubt it would add up to one third the price of a pusher A class five-star newall etc at over 2 million . That guys long chassis is gross and overlong just to get a Jeep on the back is it worth all the problems that extra length will cause you long term. The ideal is to keep the Volvo as commercial so on resale it holds it price well just swopping the hitch only but keeping the commercial hitch in the garage to replace at a later date.

These HDT setups are far less weight than the big buses and everyone allows them. Per bridges, not sure how many places that would be an issue unless the campground is way off the beaten path. All new bridges, even in rural areas are built for more than 40 ton now. The weight of farm machinery is worse than 99% of trucks, unless it is a farmer with a semi, then they are almost always way over the limits.

Switch it up your getting your information from the wrong person! I am a former semi truck inspector, and other at trucking companies and former semi driver and motorcoach driver! Most semi trucks new are not $300,000 . Usually $200-250,00 and used reliable ones are not 40,000. The market price changes every year! Last year a lot of big companies bought new and loaded the market with used semi bringing prices down early late 2022 - some of 2023. Depending on demand for new will always change the market! A lot of big companies lease or buy and trade or sell around 400,000. Miles. The information he gave you about miles on semi compared to regular truck isn’t correct! Most semi trucks start needing major repairs at 500,000 and depending on engine type could be sooner! Research the engine types for common issues and the same engine in different year can be great or bad depending manufacturer changes! Most semi truck interiors don’t have the bench table combo and most don’t have large fridge! His semi interior package is not the most common and cost more! I would recommend Prevost Bus that was converted to Rv from new! 1998-2006 pre emissions for def fluid systems and the best series 60 Detroit engine! Buy a car trailer for vehicle! You can find many Prevost motorcoach buses with under 200,000 miles Ride great , Lots of space and lots of storage! Prices $75,000 -$350,00.

That guy with the semi is giving you so much misinformation it's scary. 100K on a semi is closer to 20k-25K on a pickup(diesel). A million miles on a commercial truck is close to end of engine life. If you go 50,000 miles on an oil change plan on wearing out your motor 3 times as fast. 15K on an oil change + oil filters and fuel filters is fine, I used to change mine 10k-12k. Some companies do 20k on an oil change but they get rid of their trucks every 3 years. I've been in the trucking business over 40 years as an owner and I also RV a lot. 20k weight limit on the single drive axle, 34K on a tandem drive axles and 12k on your steer are the weights.

If you are a little shorter in the leg than Todd you can get steps added to your truck or sent to you to add by RVHaulers with Gregg . He makes a step replacement that adds steps and makes it easier to climb in. At about 14:00 minutes the video titled "Never Rust Modular CANBed by RVHaulers" shows the steps. His channel also has a few years of RVHaulers to look at. Sheila there is a club of ladies that drive their RVHaulers, the videos are funny when the men admit they are not allowed to drive much anymore. The safety while towing 20k plus is a big reason to look at them. The truck can easily stop the 20K pound RV even if the trailer brakes failed. Be safe.

if you dont stray off the paved roads i suspect the long wheelbase and low clearance wouldnt come up very often as problematic. most people are adverse to change so driving a hdt is never going to be an attractive option to them. i would just be a little concerned with the total length being illegal and what would happen if you were in an accident - police charges? insurance? being sued?

Great video and Rob has a gorgeous unit. We started full timing 3 1/2 years ago and it was our first RV experience. We were all set for a 1-ton dually and then came across the HDT in a video similar to this. Ours have the Smart car (which we bought a year before the truck as we finished our RV build), so it is a little shorter (29’), but the extra storage is amazing. The safety and comfort was the deciding factor for us and we never looked back.
Last year we did over 100 different stops, spanning parks, resorts, Harvest Hosts, national forest, etc. with zero issues or concerns.
Thanks for spreading the word and debunking some of the myths of great alternative.
