This is back when more people had balls to write truly complex characters who have very bad qualities but you can still see the humanity in them. This is a large part of why I love TWD. ❤ its so comforting to see younger people (usually given a bad rap of being too sensitive) understanding Merle Dixon and even rooting for him in season 3 as they watch the Walking Dead.

@@davidgreener7419 he'd have had to die eventually so Daryl can get the spotlight, but i see Merle surviving till S6 dying to a saviours attack to be honest, that would motivate Daryl to hate the saviours like in canon.
Amazing actor, but quite insufferable personality to work with. He's always over-energized and loves to be the center of attention even at the expense of others.
I’m rewatching Season 3 and it’s probably the best overall Season, there’s no filler episodes, unnecessary cliffhangers, no boomerang storytelling, it’s just one complete story with so much character development for each character
it's only downside is that too many characters die, many people like to say Abraham's death was over-shadowed, but the same thing happened to T-Dog, and at least one of the prisoners should've lived much much longer and have a interesting storyline, but it was great.
Merle's sacrifice in the third season also hits home when you see the consequences of his actions. He didn't just kill eight of the Governor's men, but he also diminished the main cadre of his army, the tried and tested veterans the Governor came to rely upon as the protectors of Woodbury and as his main force for marauding. With only Martinez and Shumpert left at the first battle of the prison that serves as the climax of the third season as the only real soldiers the Governor had, the rest of his army of 15 to 20 people (minus Tyrese and Sasha) proved to be a paper tiger that Rick's vastly outnumbered Survivors were able to defeat with a display of smoke and mirrors. And because the Governor was still mentally reeling from the second death of his daughter, the loss of his eye, the "betrayal" by Milton Mamot and Andrea, and Merle Dixon's genius ambush of the Governor's own trap, the Governor massacres almost his entire army and Woodbury's remaining citizens join with Rick to build what was the promise of a better society.
Merle's redemption arc in season 3 was one of the most beautiful parts of not only season 3 but in the entirely of The Walking Dead. He may have been a racist jerk but he loved his brother and did the right thing at the end by facing The Governor even though that meant death. Thank you for covering this
He was my fav character out of them all. He was not a good man but he was also not always a bad man. Probably more like the rest of us than anyone would care to admit.
There's an unlikely place where you can get closure from Merle's death. Mythbuster's zombie special has Michael Rooker as a guest star and he acts like a redeemed Merle
I was always mad they killed Tdog before him and Merle reunited I think that was a missed opportunity there. Was never a huge Merle fan I was pretty much always expecting him too die since he wasn’t in the comics. I always thought Daryl was gonna die in season 3 or 4 but then he got so popular I knew they’d never kill him off
I wish they'd kept Merle in the show for longer. It was interesting having a character on the team who was a bit bad and untrustworthy. Daryl became nice too quickly by season 2.
Merle was the Mercenary of the Walking dead, Abraham the Soldier, Rick the Sheriff tried to keep things in good order, Glenn a Soldier, Maggie a Soldier, Sosha a Soldier, Tyrese a Soldier, etc
Merle was such a complicated character. I’m not sure though it can be said he had a full redemption arc… Merle can’t be put in the same category as the Governor “ too far gone”, because he wasn’t . In my opinion Merle could’ve been fully redeemed if Daryl was involved, no Daryl no redemption… After he was separated from Daryl he joined right in with the Governor doing his dirty work , after Daryl came back into the picture Merle started changing , and everything he did was for Daryl that’s it, don’t ever get it twisted .. Merle cared about Merle , and Daryl that’s it..Merle stated “Daryl want’s to be at the prison”, he laid down is life not to protect the group, to protect Daryl.
Although that’s true he saved michonne from the exchange with the Governor which wasn’t just for Daryl but for the better of the group. in my opinion he redeemed himself but that’s just my opinion

When he went to kill the governor I knew he wasn't going to make it but what really got me was seeing him as a walker he may have been bad but he wasn't evil
His arc is perfect. His older brother relationship with Darryl was incredibly well acted and believable. He chose to throw away his easy life of plundering with the Governor to protect his brother, and his brother’s new family. He was self aware to know he wouldn’t fit in with Rick’s group and voluntarily left. I could say more.
I like how the show was ballsy enough to redeem a racist character who probably didn't even deserve it. He got a much better ending than a lot of the "moral" characters of the group.
We saw a decent amount of Merle in season 2, technically as a hallucination when Daryl was having his mid-life crisis. Then of course, he's back "for real" come season 3. I was a little disappointed that he couldn't be around longer in the series.
