Thank you, Brian! I really appreciate that. The basement bar has been clutch during this past year for sure. I thought about naming this video fertilizer 101.
This is one of the best fertilizer videos I have seen. You did an amazing job explaining everything. I would recommend this video to just about anyone who has a question about fert. Great job brother!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate it. I wanted to help people out with all of the info I wish I knew when we first moved into our house. Thanks for watching, buddy!
Very very interesting! Some people simply have a gift in making things so simple and easy to understand. I’m in bed ready to fall asleep but this just woke me up! Thank you so much. I’m subbing!
Ive watched hundreds of lawncare videos but you gave the best explanation of NPK I've ever heard, up-down-all around. I think pre-emergent is the best way to stay weed free and have a good lawn but so many beginners forget about about fertilizing. Awesome video, thanks for all the info.
Leesah, thank you so much for the kind words! Pre-emergent definitely cuts down on the weed pressure. Once you get your grass thick enough, the weeds have nowhere to attach their seeds into the ground and you don’t need any kind of weed killers or preventers. Thanks for watching.
Very informative. I use synthetic in the spring and late fall. Organic in late spring early fall. In the summer when we have fertilizer bans , I use animal grains like cornmeal, soybean meal, alfalfa.
I stage my fertiliser inputs too, (cold season) but all organic, with a stuff that is similar to the US Milorganite and another nice fertiliser that I use is a sheep wool/horn meal mix, slow release phosphorous perfect for our summer season, it adds carbon to the soil too, nettle tea is high in iron so I brew that stink up and feed it to the lawn as well as a molasses spray in the winter and early spring. I think you need the soil free of chemicals to work it's magic, and a textured mass to help the soil retain moisture better, my lawn is currently a deeper shade of green than my chemical neighbour's robot mown yard is right now, even though it is only a quarter as big!
Mr legend!!!! Thankyou, your video has brought the sun out here! Was 70f yesterday, in March😱! The trouble and strife ( wife) wants the lawn/garden slabbed over, not happy as it’s looking the best since we moved in there following your advice 😢
Thank you!! Its kind of sloped in the back so we usually play in the driveway, but there are plenty of other backyard activities to be had. I appreciate you watching!
I’d recommend a slow release nitrogen, like one of the organic fertilizers I mentioned. The best way to tell what you need is to do a soil test and see if you’re low in any nutrients.
Do you know if the brown spot is coming from fungus? It could just be areas in your lawn that were not covered with snow and look browner than the ones that were covered in snow. It’s normal to have some brown spots in your grass while it is dormant
Did you ever tell us your origin story on lawn knowledge? This is more than just "Dad knowledge", and I know you're a teacher. Once all that snow melted, I noticed I really need to thicken up the immature growth I have. Last year was had for dandelions and crab grass. Plus I have muddy areas that I need to seed too. So I have a lot of work to do.
😂 dad knowledge. I love that. Grass and soil biology has become a passion of mine and I’ve learned from my own mistakes along the way. For your situation, you could use the Scotts starter fertilizer with the crabgrass preventer. It has the same active ingredient as Tenacity, so you could also seed with it. For the dandelions, you could spot spray them with a weed b gon or use a stand up weed puller like I do.
Starter fertilizer is best for new sod. It is high in phosphorus which helps aid in root development. I sodded some KBG a few years ago in a small area and starter fertilizer worked well.
I get that most people aren't that into lawncare, but everyone should really get a soil test. There are a lot of areas in the country that have enough phosphorus in the soil to last for decades. These starter ferts and others that contain phos are just not necessary for a lot of people. I would focus more on Ph and getting that into an optimal range. That will have a much larger effect than dumping unnecessary nutrients on your lawn year after year. I would even go as far as saying most people could get by on a nitrogen-only plan, however you have to be careful with things like urea and AS, but they're a lot cheaper and can be used safely with the right knowledge.
I completely agree with you, and I mentioned at the end of the video that getting a soil test is the best way to determine what, if any, macronutrients should be supplemented. I appreciate your feedback and knowledge on the topic and thanks for watching!
I’ve never been to the Twin Cities, but I’ve heard it’s beautiful! I played football in college for Jerry Kill who used to be the head coach at Minnesota. I need to make it up there sometime.
No problem. It is still pretty early. 80% of crabgrass seeds germinate when the soil temps are 60-65 degrees. I’d hold off for at least a few more weeks.
Hey Pita, do you know what type of grass you have? If it's cool-season grass, the best time to seed is in the fall. If you are seeding warm-season grass, the best time is late spring. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for replying. I literally just got off a call with my local Home Hardware (Ontario, Canada). I planned on overseeding my KBG and wanted to know if I could apply the fertilizer first or the seed first. I was told that I can fertilize first and apply the seed by the weekend. Is this correct? I thought there was to be a 4wk window between applications. Thanks again for your help.

Yes that stuff is terrible. No reason to use it. Maybe if you have an absolute salad bar of weeds, but even then I'd rather spray. Sprays are much more controlled.
I just bought a new place and thats how I'm planning to approach this. I figure that with good fundamentals I should (hopefully) have a managably small amount of weeds, which I can hand pull. I like the idea of overseeding for building a strong future turf that is a defense against weeds. Hopefully it'll work out and I will feel the same way next year.

Weed n Feed vs Separate application of Weed then Fertilize? Which would be best?
Weed and feed if more for the person who doesn’t want to spot spray or pull weeds. I prefer using lawn food and pulling weeds that pop up.

I would hold off on the ironite for at least a few more weeks unless a soil test said you have a serious iron deficiency.
