- Character introductions are awesome, and are one of my favorite aspects in storytelling. Haikyuu is great at this, as seen with Hinata, Nishinoya, Miya Atsumu, and so many other amazing introductions. In this video, I discuss Haikyuu's Hoshiumi Korai, one of our little giants, and how amazing his introduction is.

Obviously he is a very different personality to Hinata, but it’s kind of like a window into a timeline where Hinata’s middle school had a proper boys volleyball team. He has both the skills and the confidence in them, and much like Hinata wanted from the beginning, he’s the Ace on the left. I don’t think Hinata would have been a middle blocker had he been able to play prior to high school. He was put there for the quick.
Not just a middle school but a powerhouse middle school and I doubt Hinata still isn’t national camp level player.

@@eliaelirko9849 I disagree, I think once hinata becomes a 2nd or 3rd year he starts to be national level. Currently his only real attacks are quicks and he can’t overpower others.
@@hsy2448 as I said, he starts to break free from quicks in the nekoma match and builds his new weapon in the kamomedai match. At latest at that lvl he's national lvl in my eyes

His OST ("Seaguls") is also one of the best of the anime, it's so aerial. It gives you the feeling of flying, and the urge to go and jump !!

I love how this song is named after Kamomedai, Hoshiumi's team, since Kamome means seagull.
My fave was “the threat of trust” from Tanaka’s sharp line shot.
Just the score was so progressive it made me so hype

Yeah also having read the entire manga. Hoshiumi is definitley a character i wouldn't of paid attention too if not the anime and manga bringing out his character so well

Edit: I love Hoshiumi because if Hinata had seen him instead of the Little Giant, we all know he would also idolize him (Hoshiumi being literally just an inch smaller than the real Little Giant). He's basically everything Hinata wants to be, or wished for, as he's already improved a lot in the future. Now I remembered that Ushijima probably played against him, and other short players as he said in the match against Karasuno.
The last chapters are soooo good
S4 is packed with amazing mini moments that are essentially trailers for S5, and Hoshiomi's intro is one of them (or I guess it would be for s6)
Hoshiomi being annoyed at Kageyama at the training camp because he showed no surprise at Hoshiomi being there showed us how he wanted everyone to be in awe of him because everyone initially underestimates him for his height and he takes pleasure in shocking everyone with his abilities. For Kageyama, Hoshiomi was hope itself, we see him telling Hinata he can fly higher once they get back from their camps. This also tells us that Hoshiomi will probably get along really well with Kageyama and Hinata since they don't underestimate him one bit, but take inspiration from him, the same way his teammates do, and I absolutely love it!
Hoshiomi and Hinata both looked up to The Little Giant growing up but they became very different people, and that fact made sure that they both feel excited and competitive towards each other. And I know I'll probably cry when watching the match (we all know what happens :') ) but I fr can't wait for it. The bow that they share at the end? Amazing.
I can't wait for the Kamomedai-Karasuno match despite knowing how it ends and Hoshiumi I love this tiny arrogant (rightly so though) absolute blast to watch seagull
(although in all honesty im more hyped for season 5 which is most likely just gonna be the Nekoma-Karasuno match cuz like-yea-that match was HYPE-)
Too bad there is no s5 or s6 haikuu gonna end in 2 movies
I swear to god I started having goosebumps as soon as he did the first recieve and by the time the camera was panning from left to right and the commentators said "the one man army" I can't express how hype that moment was, it was only second to Hinata's perfect recieve for me.
Once again, I agree with every word. That sequence where the announcers call Hoshiumi a little giant gives me absolute chills every time I watch it. It's brilliant.

Ye I love how haikyuu introduced so many awesome antagonists like that e.g. Haiba Lev and Ushijima etc. Introducing someone like that from an opposite team and actually showing it from karasuno's perspective really makes us feel like we are in the karasuno team and a bit of fear is born in our hearts. Another reason to love haikyuu

NGL, when I read the manga before S4, I was pretty intimidated by the Miya twins, but Hoshiumi was on another level, that I thought, "no way is Karasuno winning this match against Kamomedai". He is the "Little Giant" that Hinata is desperately trying to achieve, he's got hops, power, skill, and defense, a scary pint-sized all-arounder x cannon for Kamomedai. It's just unfortunate what happened during his face-off with Hinata at the end.
Hoshiumi remembers me a lot about a Brazilian player called Giba, in a Brazilian team standard he was short (192) but he was such a central piece in probably the best iteration of the national team.

This is a spoiler but, Hinata perfected his decoy persona after the time skip. He was even called Ninja Shuyo.
Hoshiumi quickly becomes my favourite character. his addition to the story just elevates hinata and the little giant narrative. the manga did him so much justice, his chapter (not yet animated) is one of the best one in the series, i love him so much
I still hear the "CHIIIIIISAAAANNAAAAAA KYOOOJIIINNNNNN" and the seaguls ost whenever i see hoshiumi

when i saw Hoshiumi Korai, i became more in love with volley and started training like crazy to beat tall people. He made me believe that you can be anoying, in Volleyball, even being small. Now, everytime i play with my friends, they wanna block me. 😒😄

good stuff! interesting definition on an introduction, i think what we see at the national training is enough to say he was introduced to the audience and kageyama, but that sequence was definetly his introduction to hinata, and in a way maybe a second/more detailed intro for us.
as you said, an amazing sequence. i generally love what i remember of his character (havent re-read the rest of nationals since it came out, i always jump to the beach), the idea of him knowing that hinata will make it to his level and him waiting for that rematch later... oooo its good
if i remember correctly, didnt ushijma have a good introduction like this aswell? this was a step above that of course, which haikyuu usually is (every season is better than the last imo), but still, might have been something to add?
Yeah, I kinda made a loophole with the sequence by calling it an introduction, but like you said, it was Hinata’s introduction to Hoshiumi as well as a proper introduction of his capabilities so that’s how I took it. With ushijima, from what I can recall I believe his introduction was when hinata and kageyama had the whole concrete moment with him, which was amazing. Thanks for the comment :)

I just realized but the anime made a mistake when showing Hoshiumi serve. At 6:18 when you pause you can see that he is standing on the orange part of the court when serving. We have seen the court before it we know that the orange area is the inside of the court. So when he served he should have been on the blue bit as that is the outside. If it was not an animation and art style problem the refs should have called it a line fault. The scene still looks sick though.
Hoshiumi also knows how to set. Guess you missed that part

i swear i love rewatching hoshiumi intro during nationals, it's face paced, loud, and exciting. i know a lot of haikyuu stans don't actually watch volleyball outside of haikyuu, but man i love watching real volleyball matches. it's really easy and fairly fast how points get scored. it's a fast paced sport, quite literally a blink and you'll miss it.
and i'm telling you, i really underestimated the effect commentators have because it made the scene come to life, just like it would in a real match. usually i don't even notice or rather i ignore the commentary bc i'm too focused on the match irl, but having it in an anime where it's deliberately put there and you have to focus on it, the chills man.

Honestly, they might've developed the same type of playstyle due to them constantly playing with one another. So we'd probably have two little giants rather than a little giant and a decoy, if that makes sense.
