Wow, I'm amazed how early you plant garlic. I don't get ours in until after we clear the sweet potato bed in late October! But I agree, we get nice green growth that pretty much sails through our 15° lows in January.

@joshuahoyer1279 oh yeah! I use my girls birthday as a marker for all my fall season plantings. When I used to go in ground later, like in September or October, the cloves didnt swell quite as much. The first pic in the vid is the last harvest that I took from the same grow zone just this past June. It was nice harvesting before July when its dry and hot and less inviting to the garden.

That's really interesting! I wonder if it's somewhat related to the long day/short day issue with onions. I've seen some southern gardeners get some big bulbs on long day onions when they plant it late summer or early fall, when those are traditionally grown up in spring here in our latitudes. All about accumulating those rays of light!

@joshuahoyer1279 it really is. Or, its about acclimation of what you already grow. In time, acclimation alters growth behavior and performance. We see this with lots of crops that we grow over and over again, and inbthe same spot.
As the soils take on the necessary soil companions and nutrients shared by the plants, the energy of the soil goes way up. For years, I've stated that crop rotation damages or impedes this natural progression. We see proof of this energy when we recrop. The BTE method goes a long way to setting up the perfect conditions to store energy.
The carbon is the energy sync. Life sync, etc..
That bed, I can dig down several more inches before touching the grey clay. Its red everywhere else. But grey under the gardens, it changes to a more humic filled clay that is somewhat better draining.
Since we dont mess with the dirt below, its condition isnt very impactful in the grander scheme of things..

    Thanks for sharing.
Even for me, this is early planting.
Does your garlic grow above ground all winter?
I pray for mine to not show green till March/April.
    Peace

@DustySplinters yes, it'll grow greens soon, and it'll stay green all winter. The deep soils insulate the cloves as well as let them split when the temperature is just right. These garlic develop similar characteristics to onions. They are so potent, cutting them draws tears of joy!
Done by early July or late June. I'll be laying in several more small plots of garlic and onions since the family is expanding!
