There's a difference between running a project and making the creative decisions. One of the problems with a lot of big studios (as someone whose job is working for them) is that people with little to no creative experience or training make calls they're unqualified to make. Let execs deal with money and business, and let artists make art. That so many people think these aspects of a production can't work together harmoniously is what drives projects to failure.

I'm so used to writing my academic things about stuff that don't change, like ancient texts or obscure dialects. I just watched the trailer for TATWD, and the thoughts. OMG, the spiraling thoughts! And when she says, "Imagine being stuck inside my head all the time with no break, no way out. A lot of my thoughts feel like they aren't even mine, like I'm not the real me." There is so much truth in that.
As someone who has OCD, thank you for writing the book, and thank you to the entire creative team for making this movie. Hopefully it gets more people to understand how complex and debilitating OCD is. That it's not an adjective, and it's most definitely not a joke. That it's so much more, so much WORSE, than simply liking things clean and organized.

Last year a well-established company that makes online content that I like hosted a paid livestream event. They introduced one of those consumer financing companies, and then I saw someone comment on the day-of advertisement that they were really excited and had just finished selling their blood plasma to purchase a ticket. Hey there:) i am one of the John Green Fans that almost never watch these videos. When I read most of the books my english wasn‘t even good enough to unterstand the Videos. But those books about cool and funny and interesting nerds that had truely good friends and fell in love and just lived a very hopeful life while staying true to themselves… They meant a lot to me when I grew up. So when I read Turtles all the way down, I was maybe 18 years old or so and was fully appreciating my truely good friends and fell in love and just lived a generally very hopeful life and I liked it, but I didn‘t long for the life of the characters, because well, I was in a pretty good place at that time. And just now, when I watched to trailor I remembered all those feelings again that I felt throughout my favourite John Green Novels. And I got suddenly very thankful for those hopeful narratives about teenagers that actually resembled me in some way (instead of the classic shy girl that is not like other girls falls in love with the very badass yet cool boy that i also read). Thank you for writing about hard themes in a funny and honest way. I think I‘ll organise a movie night with others that also grew up reading your books and just enjoy feeling all the feelings :) thank you, your books truely matter to me.

I tried to read Turtles All the Way Down when I was in high school, and it was honestly *too* relatable because I related to Aza so much. I had to leave it there, and finally came back to it this year and it really is true that you find books when you need them. I was able to look at Aza’s experience from a better mental state than what I was in the first time I tried to read it, and it really was a profound way to read the book as someone who has sought treatment and is on the other side of what is hopefully the worst of those feelings. I can’t wait to cry watching the movie, as I did through much of the book, much of those tears being from remembering the pain that younger me was in and how proud she’d be of where I’m at now. Hey John. I wanted to say thanks. I've had an EXTREMELY tough year in terms of mental health and I finally got around to reading Turtles all the way down, by which I mean I stared at my hardback copy for so long I eventually got the audiobook from the library because even scanning my eyes over the page wasn't enough to make my brain shut up so I needed to drown it out with sound and in spite of the circumstances it was a good experience. It made me feel things like hope and understanding and self compassion when I took hours to remove myself from my bed to get food and stuff like that. I felt all the bad things closing in and yet words could still stir something in me when nothing else could. So yeah thanks for the weird YA novel about mental illness and financial security and the last surviving species of Rhynchocephalia. It helped. It helped when I needed it most and I thank you for that

I'm so excited for this. Turtles All The Way Down back in the day was perhaps the first time I saw myself and how my brain works somewhat reflected in a character. It prompted me to do a lot of exploring and learning and finding out that I wasn't alone. 💚

I just finished watching the movie and I kid you not I sobbed for like thirty minutes straight. I was diagnosed with several mental health disorders including OCD in the last year and the way Turtles All the Way Down handles OCD and anxiety and Aza’s story hit something in me in a way that I didn’t know I needed. Beautifully done movie 10/10 almost wasn’t even disappointed by the glaring lack of turtles I’d heard prolific author, musician, and vertical video sensation Hank Green complain of.

I love listening to authors get excited about adaptations of their work because it's so refreshing. Every time I see Rick Riordan's pleased face when he doesn't have to be mad at the new Percy Jackson series is so relieving (if you want to spend a fun afternoon being mad at Hollywood I suggest looking up his open letters to Chris Colombus about how bad the movies were. They are delightfully snarky). I'm so pleased you are excited about this adaptation and I can't wait to watch it. May all your future adaptations be just as good!

Hi @vlogbrothers (John) I didn’t really expect you to speak very much about your experiences with film execs and Hollywood as a whole, but I really appreciate your honesty. I work in post production, and maybe you’re not aware because it’s not as sexy as the Writers and Actors strikes, but there are currently disputes and negotiations ongoing with another large American film union: IATSE. Because of this many of the big studios have delayed productions starting up. This has had the knock on effect of many people in post production, people who are not involved or protected by IATSE to lose their jobs. And this is global. I’m based in the uk and it’s estimated that 68% of the film and tv industry are out of work right now because of the delayed work. Sometimes I watch your tuberculosis videos and think to myself, I wish we had a John Green and a nerdfighter community in this industry! I’ve been out of work for 8 months and I really don’t want to leave it but I feel my hand is being forced, once again to appease already rich shareholders. Thank you John for being a good example 🙏
