I was the kid with heart who actually went through and did quit playing music. I’m still upset I did, I always felt pressured into this competitive scene and I didn’t like it, I just wanted to be myself but no one liked that so after highschool I quit. Now, I’m kind of just proud I did but upset that I had to. Point is, after watching soul multiple times, it makes me realize how horrible it felt being in a program that only cared how good you were, not if everyone treated you good.
You should find some time to rediscover that passion!! If you've done it before it should be easier to find you ground. Music can rly fix a lot of things
Competitive music is shit. No one does it after high school (seriously). You should get back into it, it's a lot more fun when it's not treated like a sport.
So many times I have said I was quiting trombone but my mom (a trombone major) told me I couldn't. I was on a beginner level book, Hot cross buns, and new notes, you know. I was really discouraged because I get like I wasn't progressing, until my mom got out her old music and played for me. It inspired me to keep playing, she even gave me her old beginner song books a couple months ago and I haven't wanted to quit since
I'm watching my 10 year old daughter struggle with learning the trombone and we were all surprised she would pick that over flute or clarinet like most girls do. I've been trying to encourage her to stick with it, and as I was typing this, she came in all excited that she can finally 'buzz correctly.' Makes me so happy as a parent, I hope your learning journey is going better too. :) -Mom who picked clarinet.
This is of topic, but I noticed that her trombone has no counter ballance... no wonder she wants to quit, her poor hand. Just kidding, this video is amazing!
actually i’m pretty sure that your aren’t really supposed to puff your cheeks unless that’s what is 💯 most comfy (i think). that how it is for trumpet (i also think) but don’t take my word for it, haven’t searched it up in a while
Well, Andy Martin, the guy who recorded all of the trombone audio for "Soul" (and was sadly never credited in the actual credits), did say that he was being video recorded during the entire time that he was recording the audio. So, I'm guessing that Pixar really studied the slide positions to make them completely accurate.
@@Stephenp503 You don’t even need a trigger. For example, the F above middle C can be played in 1, #4, and 6, and that’s without a trigger. Also, basically any note above the Bb above middle C can be played in basically any position, they’re just really high and hard to play.
I wish the movie had more of this edit: Going in, I expected the movie to explore the jazz elements more. So when they abandoned it right at the start, I was kinda disappointed. IMO, the movie was still...decent but I think the change in direction changed my view on the movie. Nevertheless, it's a great way to introduce kids to the wonderful world of jazz!
Movie honestly would've been better if it was simply just about him and his life rather than doing the whole sort of Disney thing where there needs to be some sort of spin on that type of thing.
Bummer about the Stars in the cup last year. All of us in Sharks land were hoping Joe Pavelski could bring home some hardware. I love what you did with the solo. I saw Andy Martin at a clinic in the SF Bay area a few years back. He's a die-hard Giants fan, but wasn't even aware that there were NHL teams on the west coast.
From my personal experience, in middle school *EVERYONE* wanted to take a solo. But once you hit high-school and you say "alright who wants a solo?" Everyone shrinks into their coats l.
I used to play trombone in high school. I got grade 4 with distinction. All the bullying made me quit. The kids made me think it was 'uncool'. Now I've gone so long without playing, I've probably lost it. This animated kid went through the exact same shit as me.
Why do people say don't puff your cheeks while we play? I play tuba so I puff my checks for certain notes. I picked up the trumpet and I've seen my high school BD puff his checks while playing and he's a sax player. And my college BD is a trumpet player and he does sometimes. Like bruh. Even saxophonist do. Like bruh
you can damage your cheeks if you overdo it, while its not a guarantee that you'll hurt yourself if you do, its taught so that kids and beginners dont develop bad habits
@@nifubias1494 something my current band director says to us a lot is "be better" it's like bruh at first I didn't understand what he meant but now I do. But I understand to teach beginners that because they don't know what they are doing yet
it's not as much as you CAN'T as you should try not to. Especially at higher octaves, it's very difficult not to get a litte puffy cheeks, but puffing them out can cause people to struggle with the corners of their embochure. However, with instruments whatever works works, so if you play with puffed cheeks and it doesn't affect your playing, then go for it
people being told not to puff their cheeks is propaganda they tell you in middle school because it theoretically can ruin your embouchure but, not puffing your cheeks is not an absolute rule to playing wind instruments. until it is, however, if it sounds good, then it is good
How long did it take him to learn and if he doesn't live by himself and his mum walks saying what are you doing and he is just like practising how to do so in thing in soul
I forgot how hard the scenes with Connie hit me. Even in a movie, a kid who plays with that much heart wanting to quit is a *tragedy*.
Happens so much though

In middle school / jr high, there was a kid in our band who was amazing at trombone! Like dude was TALENTED, but he hated it 😂
honestly the presence of the band makes me happy in general

i loved this movie as a trombone player because trombone is an underrated instrument in my opinion

yes! Im a flute and we only have one trombone in my 7th grade band!
