I struggle with any ball when the sun is very low in the sky as the reflection off damp grass hides the ball. But I generally find: - white ball means the ground will be frosty or there will be daisies. Also hard to see against a cloudy sky - yellow ball will land in the leaves or dandelions - orange always hides in the leaves Landing on the fairway may help but I haven’t had chance to test that! 😉
I find even the white triad’s are hard to lose…I had to retire my last one after about 4 or 5 rounds… had just hit too many tree’s with it and didn’t trust it anymore.
Here in South Dakota, with all of the leaves and dormant grass in the fall and winter, the red balls are almost impossible to find. They are also tough to follow in flight. The vibrant yellow/green ones seem to be the easiest to find.
For me the vice lime green and the slightly annoying but entertaining srixon divide yellow red or yellow blue are surprisingly easy to pick up in the air or from a distance. Especially on those shady days
High handicapper here - so am often looking for my golf balls in winter ! ( and summer)! My option is a bright red - got a few red Bridgestone balls and I still have most of them - for me that's great ! Surprising fact Bright Green is good as well - colourful leaf litter is a major problem ! The Bridgestone is expensive - maybe a cheaper Red or Bright Green might be the best ! I swing easy in winter and soon will be trying out my new fairway mat - should be fun !
I think you’re the only person so far that finds bright red the easiest to see like me 😅 The green was in close second. Swinging easier is good practice, I suppose for a high handicapper, it’s not how good and long you can hit it, it’s trying to keep the same ball to shoot as low as possible.
A few years ago, a Golf Magazine (can't remember which one) did a visibility study of different color balls at 150 yards distance. Here is the rating: 1) Yellow 2) Green 3) White 4) Orange 5) Red 6) Blue I prefer yellow myself. And, I guess you sure wouldn't want to use Red or Green if you are color blind either.
The point of this video is that what is visible in summer, when grass is green, is not necessarily visible in winter conditions. Dark colors are also easier to see the flight of against a cloudy sky. I play white or green most of the year, but last year played the Vice orange shade in winter conditions, and almost always found them.
Hi Gary, We play at twilight, and to make matters worse, I have the early onset of cataracts. When playing on overcast dull winter's days, I use a pair of night time anti-glare driving glasses, with the bright yellow lenses, for tracking my ball mid-flight. These are readily available for less than £10.00 at most commercial petrol filling stations. Some years ago, my golfing partner purchased a pair glasses that were specifically designed for golfers to enable them to search for golf balls in the rough. Believe or not, they were like a welders safety goggles with dark blue/ black lenses - the opposite of my night driving yellow glasses. They were designed to be worn only when searching for the ball and only worked with white balls which he assures me, really did stand out from the grass which appeared to be black! I cannot remember him ever using them o a regular basis, however. I like the Wilson Staff balls because they have a very soft coating on them and come in a wide range of colours. The red stands out in the sky which is probably the most important factor, not their visibility under leaves. Although, funnily enough, we once found 5 of these red balls, in relatively short grass, on 3 consecutive holes ! Most strange. Kind regards, Dave Richards
Gary could you do a comparison of distance in cold weather of hard V soft balls. Thinking of my playing partner is that softer ball allows the ball to compress more in the cold and so accelerate off the club face so go further
Play a lot on my own. In winter I was using the tour response yellow which they’ve stopped making. It stood out for me. I’ve been trying the yellow Wilson triad which I find highly visible. The tour response stripe I really like visually. Finding it, may as well be painted camouflage as I cannot find them at all. Summer or winter. It’s the bright greeny/yellow that works for me.
As a partially sighted player I find the bright orange are essential at most times of year. Apart from autumn when leaves can be an issue. I mainly use Wilson staff duo. The lime green volvik also works well for me. Red is an absolute nightmare and, if I'm feeling flush, the srixon divide in orange and yellow are good. Oddly, pink works very well if I find one.
I’ve never actually owned a black ops. I loved the black ops sam fitted me, but Pxg will only help me out with product if I go to one of their own fitters to fit an approve the specs and it’s been a busy end to the year. I don’t mind my stealth 2, it’s setup so forgiving, but it’s just not a bomber like the Pxg black ops.
If you hit a bad shot you can accept not being able to find it but when you hit a great shot down the middle and lose it amongst the leaves it's so frustrating that's why I concentrate more on range, chipping and bunkers......hate losing balls especially the expensive ones....roll on summer lol.......... 🌟🎊🤩🥳
Winter golf is used balls / found balls. In winter comps I might take a new Kirkland Out as they are cheap at £1.50 a ball or better. As soon as the weather starts to improve and we Get some roll Out then better brands come out. But for social Golf it’s always a used ball.
I’ve got to be honest, I do exactly the same as all my winter golf is for fun, but never the less, there’s nothing worse than losing a ball in a area it shouldn’t be lost due to leave or wet ground.
@ yep, one hole at the club, par 5 300 yards to the dog leg. Out of bounds right which has always been a magnet for my ball. Smacked the best drive on there walked confidently Down the fairway, lost 😡 😡🤬
Maybe bright orange for frosty conditions but never with leaves down. Yellow are best in Winter or darker conditions but not all yellow balls are the same. Srixon Q Star Tour yellow are reflective and stand out really well plus are a good ball 3 piece urethane and if you shop about you can pick the up for about £23/dozen.
I remember my dad telling me a story about when he was an assistant pro back In the 50’s that one of his jobs in the winter was to sit in the back of the pro shop and paint some golf balls yellow for the members.👍
If it’s low light conditions in the winter, I use a pink Callaway SuperSoft. Yellow and green are hard to see in the leaves. So are those darkish red ones.
I’m a reasonable player but high spinner who normally plays Pro V1 but come late autumn and the wet & leaves, I swap over to my winter ball which is a pink Titeleist velocity! I bought 4 boxes from a pro shop closing down for £50 a few years back and I’m down to my last dozen! They go a decent distance, stick on a wet green and stand out in the muck! Sod losing a ball buried at a fiver a pop!
Green is #1 for me, yellow #2, white #3. My eyes lose the red balls once it drops from the sky to the tree line. No chance on the blue, I lose that immediately after hitting it. I've been gaming the matte green Callaway SuperSofts for a couple of years, but recently I've been experimenting with some others.
I like to play Titleist Velocity Matte Green when playing coloured balls. I have a box of blue ones that I can't play because I lose them so easily in the grass. I tried red and played with people who played red, and I can't find them very easily. I really enjoyed playing the Chromax gold coloured balls, but they are expensive. I wonder if people with colorblindness see some colours better than others.
Reading from the comments, apparently greens their colour . I’ll google the chromax gold, not heard of them ones 👌🏼 The blue might have to be used on a frosty day lol 😂
Years ago my mother-in-law gave me a sleeve of black golf balls. Believe it or not those were the easiest golf balls to follow in the air than any ball I've ever used.
The problem with the orange ones is many men are colorblind and they can’t see them. They are using the bright green ones now and they seem to be easier to see.
I go about winter golf by ditching my Driver, woods and hybrids play with irons only I find I can see where all my shots go whatever colour ball i'm using
Tried Nitro multi color golf balls and there light blue was easier to see in the sky and on the ground. Red, yellow, orange very hard to find. White over all I think is best, but light blue is pretty good.
I only play yellow in the winter, bright, semi-matted yellow. For me, they're quite visible on the ground, even among leaves, but they're also very visible in the air (that's the most important for me). The worse balls for me are the red and pink, followed by orange, as they tend to "vanish" mid air after 150 yards and are both "impossible to miss" once you see them AND very hard to see when you're still looking for them. Best thing in winter, still, is to hit a bit less and keep going "fairways and greens" as much as possible...
I have cataracts and picking up the ball in the air is problematic. Going to try yellow to see if that helps. My course does a good job of clearing leaves so that's not an issue
I prefer a bright white. The real RED are easy to find on the ground especially in the green, but hard to track in flight. I don't like the yellows/hi-lighter ones. Also some colors don't play well with sunglasses. I played with a lady who swore by pink balls, and they were pretty easy to track.
I can't see a red ball 10 feet in front of me. Green or yellow every time for me. I've just bought a couple of dozen Srixon Q Star tour in yellow. Perfect.
Orange/ dark balls are only any good for seeing in the air V a grey sky. As soon as drop below tree line etc they are useless. I find the green balls a good comprimise of visibility in flight and on the ground.
I lose track of a lot of balls as soon as they go into the sky this time of year. The blanket of grey clouds just eats them making my drives a guessing game. Short game is better. A lot of the time I went up just teeing off with my 4i since I'm sure it's going straight.
I normally use vice lime green as they stand out in the gum tree leaves in Australia. I bought some pink vice to try the Pro Air and not mix them up. The pink are a bit weird when you see them they seem to glow strongly when you see them but when you couldn’t see them it’s like they are invisible!
Just recently bought a df3 putting when i visited scottsdale golf in warrington. Any tips on putting as i find if i use my hands and arms for the putting stroke i miss a lot of short putts. Any advice on what i should focus on is it core or shoulders or something else?
To my eye, the lime green balls stood out most Gaz. Also that Volvik red one seems to reflect a bit on the face of your iron, which is a bit off putting. Good practical idea for a video this time of the year. Also tbh, the plain white aren't too bad
When playing golf on Tuesday we had difficulty finding a pink and orange golf balls. Finding my TaylorMade red and black multi colored ball was easy. Most of the time I was in the fairway
I just bought 3 dozen Matte Green bright balls because they were on sale. I found that the red and green are the best ones however the red is hard in leaves
For my eye, the callaway supersoft in matte orange has been the easiest to find for fall golf here in western NY... however i find all colors of balls when i am looking for mine...LOL😂
Everybody’s eyes are different, so choose the ball that is right for you. Personally, I struggle to see the red ball against the green grass, so play with white 99% of the time
How on earth does a LAB putter work with a grip change? Thought the grip was part of the balance and loft delivery? I use a reverse taper grip, and love it; so havent tried a LAB because of the grip they supply
What’s the next video Gaz- what colour trousers show the mud least? 😂 Good video though- we’ve banned the red ball user in our four ball as none of us can see them land.
Great video I have an idea for another video which you can have. My course has mats with inserts which have slits in for the tee. Over time slits become difficult to get a tee in that's vertically straight, I wonder if that adversely affects spin on the ball. You might need a gadget to put the tee into to test indoors. E.g. use a shorter tee say in a lump of plasticine or similar. Or you could get Dan or Sam to lay down and hold it, like in rugby etc 😂😂
Months ago I was driving around looking for my orange ball, and I kept coming across a green ball in the rough. That was the only ball I could see, so I've been playing Green balls ever since.
My 12yo grandson has played with red Callaway’s since he began playing years ago. We can see those from outer space. He rarely loses a ball. I’ve tried, and tee to green is fine, but they mess with my eyes, putting.
I play with the Vice Neon balls and it shocked me when I first tried them how easy they were to spot. At first site, you think, "Thats GREEN! How am I going to find it?!" but somehow, it really seems to stand out.
@@garymartingolf I do. I've found they're easier to follow in the air and find on the ground in general. But, that comes with a bit of a disclaimer and that's that I live in the South West of the US, i.e., in a desert, and courses are limited in the water they can use to maintain the courses. Conditions might not be as lush and green as you have in the UK.
I live in Canada and in the fall my buddies have a rule at our club. If everyone in the foursome saw it go into leaves and we can't find it. It's a free drop.
@@FaizanKhan2 our old Boys play something similar in winter for balls lost that are on the course but lost due to ground conditions. Is there not a rule on golf allowing that anyway although with a penalty
I loved that test but I do have to say that people that I have played with that have used the reddish coloured golf ball I lose sight of them when they are in the air and also on the ground, yellow golf ball’s I can see clearly but that might be my old age 😂😂
why not try the balls that light up, they come in six different colours red, orange ,blue, green, white and yellow. i us them on the practice area when it low light before sun rise .they stay on for about 4/5 mins.
Madly or badly enough I like using the callaway war bird balls in winter 🤷🏻♂️ normally use a super soft but the warbird go a mile in winter and stop well a much hated ball 😂 I prefer white never really had any advantage with the coloured balls in winter for seeing them but my eyesight is not to good 😂
I love it! Folk loose balls on fairway where I play. I find them and wash them and give them back to the lads I play with. Must have given away over 500 this year.

Wait. Is it legal to land the ball in the fairway?
Vice lime green is easy to see in most strange conditions
I don't think you can beat a nice clean white ball for visibility.
But in winter how long does it stay white?
But they disappear in a snow bank😅. We have that problem here in Colorado.
@@mikemay8334 True. But if you're reduced to looking for a golf ball-sized hole in a snow bank, the colour of the ball is the least of your worries!

I personally think the Callaway pink with the flat finish stands out better then any other color.
That’s the ball I use in low light cold conditions. That pink stands out in nearly every lie.
*I believe ORANGE is best.* I have problems with white when trying to track it against clouds. (Pink,,maybe?)

My 12yo grandson has played with red Callaway’s since he began playing years ago. We can see those from outer space. He rarely loses a ball. I’ve tried, and tee to green is fine, but they mess with my eyes, putting.
Secret to finding your golf ball, hit the fairway
I play with the Vice Neon balls and it shocked me when I first tried them how easy they were to spot. At first site, you think, "Thats GREEN! How am I going to find it?!" but somehow, it really seems to stand out.
Do you use them all year ?
@@garymartingolf I do. I've found they're easier to follow in the air and find on the ground in general. But, that comes with a bit of a disclaimer and that's that I live in the South West of the US, i.e., in a desert, and courses are limited in the water they can use to maintain the courses. Conditions might not be as lush and green as you have in the UK.
Unless you have frost or snow, white is the only color to have!
Bought some red power soft after watching this...Cheers Gary
I live in Canada and in the fall my buddies have a rule at our club. If everyone in the foursome saw it go into leaves and we can't find it. It's a free drop.
@@FaizanKhan2 that would make sense! 😃
@@FaizanKhan2 our old
Boys play something similar in winter for balls lost that are on the course but lost due to ground conditions.
Is there not a rule on golf allowing that anyway although with a penalty
My eyes were sore just looking at that red ball 😂
That red pink color would be called fuchsia. Common color used in fishing lures.
I am colour blind and I could not pick out orange or red balls at all in this video. They were almost invisible on the ground (even on the green)
I didn’t know how many people were colour blind until I did this video. Unreal! Sounds like Greens the ball for everyone ⛳️
easiest and cheapest solution is just to hit more fairways and greens but you know what they say about wishes in one hand.
I use taylormade tour response gaz it's a nice feeling ball winter or summer 😊
I loved that test but I do have to say that people that I have played with that have used the reddish coloured golf ball I lose sight of them when they are in the air and also on the ground, yellow golf ball’s I can see clearly but that might be my old age 😂😂
why not try the balls that light up, they come in six different colours red, orange ,blue, green, white and yellow. i us them on the practice area when it low light before sun rise .they stay on for about 4/5 mins.
I find the red/orange balls difficult to follow in flight!
Winter golf, I use a lower compression ball
Does that feel softer when it’s cold? Why?
Gary are you quite certain of your comment @8:00 ? Looks like your trolley tangled with a tree and was dragging the spoils.
Haha 😂 The trolley stabiliser’s do pick up twigs, but I haven’t been in the trees 😂
Madly or badly enough I like using the callaway war bird balls in winter 🤷🏻♂️ normally use a super soft but the warbird go a mile in winter and stop well a much hated ball 😂
I prefer white never really had any advantage with the coloured balls in winter for seeing them but my eyesight is not to good 😂
I have Blue Balls most of the time 😆
White! Keep it out of the rough and leaves lol
Mid handicapper James on my channel was 50 yards off the fairway on most holes last week lol
I love it! Folk loose balls on fairway where I play. I find them and wash them and give them back to the lads I play with. Must have given away over 500 this year.
Colour blind I can’t see that red ball - Bright green slightly better
For me bright white is best.
Any balls collecting mud in leaves is impossible
Everyone hates having blue balls!
I think its the white all year around
Just don’t play in winter you won’t have the problem
@@davidquinn7144 hahah 😅🤣
I always tell ppl i am playing with, i wont ever find yellow, you're on your own..
Nice hat
Any old shite will do me in winter. Usually pay a tenner for 100 😄
Are you an honorary senior, tees tied together on string😂😂😂 havent seen that in years, pension next
Well, if you just hit the ball on to the fairway, you don't have to worry about finding it. 😅
dont you bet on it.
Never white, green or yellow for me
Hi gaz.
I'll stick to a white ball.
See I only hit fairways 😂😂
I'm surprised there are no LED balls yet. Someone get on it.
EDIT: Just checked, they do exist!!! Please review some, Gaz.
Red is no good against green if you are colourblind
Great fun Gaz.
(But keep your blue balls to yourself 🙄)
