In this video we take a look at the PhotoPills photography app. We explain what it is and go over a few of the features to see how this app can really help you capture some amazing images.
I have talked before on my vlog about how planning and preparation is key to photography and PhotoPills is an amazing tool to do that. If you you shoot landscapes, sunsets, astro photography, long exposures, star trails or time-lapses then this app is a must for you. Essentially it is a collection of tools that makes planning your shoots easy and includes things like an exposure calculator, a time-lapse calculator and tools to let you know where the sun, moon and Milky Way will be at certain times of the year and in a given location.
Sadly this is not available for Android yet but they are in the process of making an android version now that should be out by the end of the year.
The app has some excellent features and including an augmented reality mode. If you find yourself in a beautiful location that you think might make a nice shot, you can launch the augmented reality mode and it will show exactly where the sun will be at a particular time and where it will set.
I couldn't live without this now. It is definitely the best photography app for an iPhone. It saves me so much time and basically all my research and planning for a shot can be done in the app. If you spend some time getting to know the app, follow some of PhotoPills own excellent tutorials you really will see your photography move to the next level and you'll be capturing amazing images that no one else has.
What it doesn't do is control the weather though.
It costs about £7.99/$9.99 but that is he most straightforward £7.99/$9.99 you will ever spend. Check it out now.

Thanks Adam for your insight. I just used PhotoPils to plan my first attempt to photograph the Milky Way and after watching the tutorials it was spot on and not too difficult to understand. The results are terrific I'm well pleased with my first images.
just purchased the app yesterday. Great info! Thanks Adam.
Really good tutorial; I took notes while watching as I will be using this on vacation next week. Thanks Adam!
Got the android version today. Thanks for this intro Adam. Useful.
Great video, cheers man! Just downloaded the app, looks like a great tool. Keep up the fantastic work.
+outdoorswithalens Thanks. Hope you find it useful.
Thank for pointing me to this app and now the training video 👍🙏❤️
Thank you, I just got this app the other day and its a learning curve but l love the idea of know .
Nice video Adam as usual ☺
Regarding the filters you use for your lenses I want to buy a set of filters with different stops, is there any guidance or recommended coz I am very confused considering the price to be reasonable 😉
Thanks for showing this app to me. Definitely going to get it and use the shell out of it.
Just found this. Very nice, thank you. I have a bit of a challenge understanding the accent (to me) of the PhotoPills videos, so your explanation was helpful - even tho it was delivered in the Kings English - I managed to muddle through. :)
I will give it a try! First, I am going over the eBooks from Photo Pills to give me a stronger base and knowledge. I am looking forward to listen to more of your videos
Great video lots of information. Just purchase the app. it help alot thanks
£9.99 on the Google play store,... on another note, you sure have come a long way in the last 3-years, Congrats Adam.
Ha. Thanks mate. It's embarrassing looking back at some of these.
Excellent, that's really useful Adam. Have fun at Flamborough!
+Andrew Frost Thanks Andrew. Appreciate it.
Do you need an internet connection for the augmented reality? If so it may not be so good when there is no signal?
Excellent! Thanks!
Hello Adam I use Photopills on my Android device (so it is available for android) and I love it
Thank you mate 😊 I'm was looking for something like that . keep good work mate
+Mohammed Alsaady Thanks my friend. Hope you find it useful and I appreciate you taking the time to comment as always.

Can it record video while in Augmented Reality mode?
Nice one Adam :D, wishing for the android version.
Adam. This app will be really helpful to me, especially the ND and DOF calculations. Thanks for giving a preview and thanks for all the videos. Jmc
+Joe McEarchern That's great Joe. Let me know what you think of it.
Thanks just got it, Windy is a great weather satellite app.
Ok cheers Adam only reason I asked is that I thought you may love near me at Beverley, I often go to Flamborough, well Bempton Cliffs, keep up the good work and good luck with the channel
Plan to do a bit of birding and a bit of landscape. I am also however considering a slight change of plan and will possibly be heading to the Lake District again. So much to do...........
It is very complicated app, will you teach me how to use it?
Great video as always! Do you know any useful programs for PC for astro photography ?
I now do all my planning in PhotoPills. I often have google maps up on my computer at the same time, or the weather forecast!!! Do you mean for planning? Or editing? Obviously i recommend PS and Lightroom for editing but I haven't used a PC for years for my photography.
This was a great video. How are you recording your iPhone screen?
+TokyoXtreme Thanks. Appreciate it. I connect it to my Mac and use ScreenFlow.
Been using night cap, with reasonable results, I don’t care about the set up features of photo pill, just the photography and video elements, star trails, long exposure etc, do you think it’s worth swapping ??? Thanks for sharing good video
Need to get this to Android soon! This looks great.
+Rallybear To be honest I don't know why it's taken so long (granted I know very little about app building).
Great Teacher
Photo Pills is now £9.99 in the UK, but as Adam has said is worth every penny...
Wow. It is creeping up mind.
Another great video Adam, do you live near Flamborough ? When are you getting the MKIV? Cheers
Not that near no. I travel around the UK pretty frequently though. I grew up in the North East but we never really went any further south than Robin Hoods Bay. I want to go to Flamborough as i don't know it that well.
All being well i will be unboxing the MKIV in tomorrow's video.
Glad you're enjoying the videos, really appreciate you watching.

Just curious if you still use the App Adam? I don't think I have heard you mention it since I've been following your videos over the last year or so.
Thanks!
Wonderful
Just got the app which will definitely help out. One other web site I would recommend is lightpollutionmap as this will let you see if you are in a dark area to get the best of the night sky. Also there are some weather apps to let you know if the clouds at low/med/high level will be clear. Will be good to get the kids interested in the Miky Way and photography, and get them outside (within allowable distance)
What kinda of battery would you use for 7hr????
I don't think there is one
Thanks for the helpful video, which is clear and friendly as always. I do however beg to differ about the training videos which are far too frenetic and poorly structured and paced - unlike yours. Also it is time consuming to learn/find quick help about straightforward uses. A very powerful but unuser friendly app IMHO.
I don't even have a camera, and I got it.
Now £9.99 ??
The Beta Android Version has just been released.......
Excellent. Thanks for the update. Had not seen that.
sorry bad grammar dof ,dof table, hyperfocal dsitance, subject distance and augmented reality , not easy to understand the use of it , than k u
Try searching it,s crap
+barry wills You think Photopills is crap?
