I really don't think it's fair to say that she has no flaws. She's OP, but her *character* is very clearly flawed. That's why the lessons in the first couple episodes had nothing to do with magic and everything to do with character.
Agreed. OPed doesn't necessarily mean flawless, and besides, she isn't always necessarily the strongest individual around. And in the LN, she knows that utilizing her magic all the time isn't always gonna solve issues and/or get people to listen or agree with her.
I don't think her being the OP makes much sense at all. This is not a show about defeating enemies.

Phrased that way, that's what Legend of Korra should have done...not focusing on the fact she can bend all the elements right off the bat for cool action scenes, and more on developing her as a person with FLAWS. Like Aang. Which they did not. :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(
then we get to ep 3. I feel this will be where GR's opinion of the show will be decided.
To me “Wandering Witch” is basically the anime girl version of “The Witcher”.
While she is skilled and somewhat powerful, she’s definitely not a character with a Hero Complex. She travels place to place solving some problems here and there, but she only gets herself involved when she’s directly asked to, and it’s within her capacity to do so.
Like Geralt, she seems aware of her limitations (both within herself and society) and recognizes when things are too big for her to handle, or if it’s none of her business. She’s definitely not one of those protagonists that pries their way into situations trying to solve everything she comes across, nor preach some righteous cause. If the situation is too big for her, she will leave without word, leaving those poor bastards to their fate.
And like “The Witcher”, most of the situations she seems to get involved in are inspired by old folklore and stories that usually have a messed up or dark twist in the end.
At least that’s my observation.

And to your point she is not narcissistic nor a sociopath.
People point to her being narcissistic based on how she praises herself. But she doesn't think she is above people because of it. When she isn't treated with respect she wonders why, she does not get mad at the fact that people don't treat her right.
She also isn't contradicting what her mom told her either, being prideful of your looks is not the same as looking down on others. She even appreciates other people for being beautiful.
She is also not a sociopath because when she got her brooch stolen, she did not yell or exact vengeance. She does help people for little or no pay.
But she does also not always intervene. In the case of the girl being raped. How does she fix it? Kill him? Teach him a lesson? What happens as soon as she leaves if she doesn't kill him?
She will not take action and will regret it I am sure. And there are times she wish she hadn't.
Simply put, people expected her to be one thing and reality is she is neither black or white or even grey.
She does in my opinion, trend more towards being kind. But not so much that she will place her life in danger or purposely do something without knowing all the consequences
She is complicated, not without faults, and perhaps she should try to do more.
But that is not aocipathoc or narcissistic
Even geralt is even more helpfull than elina, he could have help the plant guy but she was like "nope nope, i outta here even if it s my fault."
@@annickroussemrou1064 She would have if she could. The man is poisoned and eaten to hes last breath at that point. Also remember he is well aware of the consequences. He chose to die with his sister on his own accord. Elaina merely unknowingly, passed the news.
As someone who just watch the 4th episode, man... this is not the show described by the video... and I loved it.
As someone who has finished the first 2 Volumes of the Light Novel so far, buckle up for some of these episodes to come. There is gonna be a lot of feels moments. This series goes to some pretty dark places.

@@mafty_x Yes. There is a specific chapter in Volume 2 involving a girl with sheep horns that, if adapted well with great music and voice acting, is gonna be a tear jerking in the anime.

Light novels story is very choppy. Each chapter is a separate story loosely linked together.

apparently some people thought its ending was too little or too dumb or something? I'm still digesting this particular idea. I liked it a lot tho it's not like Deca-dence was meant to be super duper deep lore - it's twisty enough in its writing I'd say and animation is great

I'm on JImmy's wavelength here - wary of why he seems so down on Deca.
I think the ending was just a bit rushed (could have used one more episode with more post-finale stuff), but beyond that I enjoyed it.
Im okay with cute girl doing cute magic things. Not everything needs to be a thriller adventure. I've seen plenty.
Really its kinda refreshing to get a show like this.

I think your critique is mostly based on what you wanted show to be, not what it is. Which is not really fair to the show. What you point as flaws are not really flaws, but just different type of story than Kino's Journey.
Yeah that's par for the course with his critiques.

@@fezblue6340 It's really sad, to me at least, how many people in the YT-ANIME community cannot enjoy shows for what they are, but end up shitting on them because of their "unfulfilled" (and unrealistic) expectations.
This also creates a problem for people trying to get in in this ANIME thingy, they get a less than positive perspective (usually REALLY negative) about shows that could end up being really great for them. Making them fall in love with ANIME as many of us back in the day.
As I've said, is really sad and unjust :(

I've read it in the comments for episode 3 PV that episode 3 is the place where the real story begins.
Yes, episode 3 is going to be the real deal and sets the tone for the series.
i was honestly not expecting to like this show as much as i do. the magic, worldbuilding, cuteness and wholesomeness are all pretty good to begin with, but what got me the most is the art style and animation, and just how good the show looks in general. definitely not what i expected. fingers crossed the quality will not drop in any regard..

@@adonisfernandez3425 well, uuh.. yeah 😅 saying that the 3rd episode took a turn is an understatement, definitely not what i was expecting 😅 BUT the art and animation are still gorgeous, so that's something. i'm still gonna stick with it, the weird turn in the show's mood just made me more curious about it 😁

I would like to point out that also in the first episode she on top of learning to not just to do what others say but she is also taught what Failure is when her teacher completely destroys her in their battle, which I do believe was quite the character development to me I would say

According to this, these stories are based on National Geographic magazines and channels which mashes' the entire theme into a story.
Fun fact: October 17 is Elaina's birthday, so that's tomorrow or 2 days from now, depending on where you live.

You should give I am standing on a million lives a chance. IMO it will be the hidden gem this season.
Anime watcher only opinion: I think she actually has two pretty big flaws, and is the reason why the conflicts have existed thus far. The big one is that she is very easily tricked. So far these lies have not been malicious, but they have definitely given her difficulties. If she does meet someone who intends her harm through trickery, I imagine it will not go well for her. She also seems to have a lack for detail. When a certain something goes missing she does not notice for a long time, even though its loss should be something she is most wary of.
The lesson from her first episode actually came in again as well: she does not have the presence of mind to ask these people why they are turning her down. She merely accepts this and moves on, and while some of that is just being in an unfamiliar place, it clearly shows she has not internalized the lesson her mentor gave her yet.
She only had just started going on a journey so she may learn a few things and lessons throughout her journey and what she had encountered . Her parents and her mentor only taught her what is expected and looked like from the outside world giving her a few ideas, such as the part where Fran decides to teach her strict lesson to Elaina idea of what failure means as what her as what mother asked Fran to do.
Now it's Elaina's turn to learn things like an individual in outside the world, eventually gaining life lessons as time passes.
She might be a slow learner but she has the spirit

Yeah, no, that isn't part of her character at all. The only reason why she was fooled in the first episode was because she was a kid who didn't really understand what was going on. And with the second she figured out what happened pretty quickly, and was just going along with the trick to see when Saya would fess up.
Elaina is many things, but easily tricked is REALLY not one of them. I can only think of one instance off the top of my head where she was actually tricked in the novels. Since she's actually the one with the penchant for scummy tricks.
I think her ego is definitely gonna be a weakness. Just from how she acts I think maybe itll play a role in her either inaction or negative action (tho I think inaction is more likely because it seems to be a series about viewing from the outside.)
Elaina and "very easily tricked" doesn't go well together... it would if its the other way around, since Elaina usually the one who does this to others.
Is it wrong for me to have this as my unanimous AOTS?? I just love the charm of this show already a few episodes in. It IS Kino no Tabi, except the main character and supporting cast are far better characterized, imho, and there’s a bit more focus on characters in general, from what I did read in the first volume in the LN (I only read vol 1 so far, btw)

@@andrewfantome4020 No, I didn't say that, though I should've specified that Kino no Tabi was better in terms of providing that sort of philosophical theme presentation and gray to dark undertones. Personally, though, I simply didn't enjoy Kino No Tabi as much, and that's just my honest feelings about that. Just because I like an inspired story a lot doesn't necessarily I'm automatically supposed to like the original source of the inspiration much much more; otherwise there'd be no point in watching anime in the first place.
@@Ryuseishun Well, if we talking about the quality of the plot, then it's more a matter of taste. Yes, Kino no Tabi is deeper and smarter, but in turn, WW has never claimed for similar ambitions. This is more of a classic fantasy adventure than a pretentious commentary on anything.

Elaina might be the realest anime I’ve watched. And the main character is a WITCH! 😂 but then it’s super dark! And I am someone who avoids dark stories, I don’t like the fact that it makes you think about your life and what being human means. So normally I wouldn’t have watch it, but I did, thinking it was gonna be fun and cute. I won’t rewatch, won’t recommend, but I don’t regret watching it because Elaina is fabulous I absolutely love her and her confidence.
I love this anime. I love the manga and light novel too ❤ I gave them all ten out of ten on MAL.
She is op, but she is no white knight. If anything the show has dark edge. Shes taking a very hands of approach to her interactions in her journey, a watcher so to speak. It's refreshing in a way. Ep4 just aired worth a watch.

Although I have high hopes for this show, I'm still worried about how it may be *broken* at the end... you know, many animes like "ARTE" weren't lucky. But I'm glad to have found an Anime I can see for.
episode 3 just came out yesterday and its weird, unlike (as suggested) she wonders around fixing shit. she instead flies away leaving the shit to get worse

Although that doesn't really explain why she would refuse to intervene and help the slave girl. As a powerful witch, it definitely wouldn't be dangerous or make her unlikely to return home one day, and I don't see how it would break rule 2 either. In one of the recent episodes she even intervened to save an entire city from a curse that prevented them from lying, so I don't see any reason why she shouldn't have been able to help that single slave girl.
@@thenew4559 the reason she couldn’t help her was there’s nothing she can do. She wanted to so bad as you see in the episode but the consequences would have been bad on her. Elaine couldn’t protect the girl and it would came down to her killing the owner who is a high ranking person that would marked her for dead. The point of the episode just because you want to do something good doesn’t meant it s the best idea.
The curse part is different because this is much further into her journey. The curse was a bad idea and everyone wanted to get rid of it. Plus she had back up at this point with Saya. This was a different circumstance

I heard that this anime is basically Kino's journey but with Fantasy elements.
99% of the time kino just observes the people and just narrates the situation.
I remember a lot of arcs where Kino visits a country with some serious issues and just goes "Damn, it really do be like that", and leaves without solving anything.
The new one? Yeah, in a couple instances. The 2003 one? Not by a long shot

I feel like one thing I like about Elaina as a character is that unlike a lot of other protagonists she doesn't feel the need to be the hero all of the time. Take episode 4 for example and episode where we see that at the end of the flower part of the episode she saw that those people were wandering towards that flower field knowing what had happened and instead of the expected "Oh I have to go save those people!" she just continues on knowing that there is no helping what had happened.
For two episodes out, honestly, the first part was overly harsh in my opinion :)
LN readers I know did say that the story is actually good, it will just take some time to start going, so yeah, we gonna need those 4 episodes to make the decision :) But I like it and I think I'm watching this to the bitter end :D
I read the LN and I won't say that ALL the stories are good. I'd argue that there are more mediocre stories than good ones thus far. I can confidently say that episode 3 is going to determine whether you are going to like or dislike the show, as it is going to be indicative of the tone of the entire series.

@@psihius Elaina is like a buffet to me tbh. Sometimes you get touching stories, sometimes dark, depressing stories and sometimes wacky, meaningless stories, I'm sure you can find an episode that you'll like if you want a relaxing experience

Really liking this show from the first two episodes, it's very lighthearted, but steps up the tone at the right times (even though you can sense a formula in just two episodes). At two episodes I think we've yet to truly grasp what the series wants to be, but I'm so optimistic at present. I also love Elaina, she's got dry wit, a sharp tongue, and I love the slight egotism she's rocking.
It's become apparent in time that this is not a story about Elaina. It's a collection of tales with Elaina's journey as the frame tale. Not sure I've seen something quite like that in anime before, but I have high hopes.
I don't care about action in this Anime. It's been awhile since I last watch a very good episodic type show. If you don't like it. Don't watch it. Every Anime doesn't need action. It's a Slice of Life type Anime for godsake. 😒
Elaina's flaw is the lack of modesty. Problem is, she has the beauty and the brains to back that cocky attitude of hers.
When I think about this anime I think of Elaina to be more of a witness to the situations that she is in. She isn’t a hero and the anime makes this clear. That is the thing I like the most about this anime.

I think adventure stories are about the world more than the protagonist taking the adventure I know it's part of the story to see the interaction of the protagonist with the world and how they develop but I think in real life if someone wanted to go traveling their aim is to experience many various things for the first time, those might affect them and might just add to their experience and memories, anyway I'm more interested in the side characters stories and how they develop in the short span of each episode, I'm interested to get a taste of different side characters with different themes and worlds and see how they will come in contact with our protagonist and how protagonist will affect them.
The LN does actually start somewhere in the middle of her journey, like Mushishi and Kino, with her backstory following later on.
The anime changed it up for some reason.

Saw 2 seconds of Kino's Journey and that was all I needed to be reminded of the imbedded interlacing on the show. So nostalgic. XD
I bought the manga literally two weeks ago at my local nerd shop thinking it was some "Let's support new authors because industry yay"-manga. I had NO IDEA that there was an anime coming 🤯
The Linar progression is because how the Anime Adepted it. The Original material is very eposodic in nature. For Example even the training and her leaving with the promisses to her mother do not follow on each other being broken up by other storry bits. No comenting on what you consider a perfect character. A full fledged witch has allready pretty much very high in standing in this world but Elena is at most of the time more a medler or observer rather than the hero that allways put everything right.
I usually drop these types of shows but when i saw this series i was really was drawn in. ill def be watching this. ep 1/2 were great
BEST ANIME OF THE YEAR
The Journey of Elaina is the best anime of the year 2020 so far.
There are a lot of anime, but this is completely different and it isn't the "same anime like others".
Elaina is a beautiful character and she represents every one of us with her simplicity. She doesn't trust everyone, she's always looking for the goodness of others and she keeps herself far from wary people (moreover she looks critically every event before getting through that).
Her Journey is incredibile in its own semplicity: meeting people and getting through all the events ARE the things which help her to grow up, with a nice characterization of the other characters too.
This anime teachs us to rely on our abilities, our mind and, above all, to be cautious in every moment because the world is as much big as the different kinds of people and events you can go through!
EVERY EPISODE HAS A SPECIFIC MORAL and it can be caught in a different way according to the different kind of the elements of the episode we take into account!

Journey of Elaina is literally 2 things.
A witch and shes on a journey, I dunno what else to expect.
A journey is a story of adventure.
An Adventure is interesting and different for everyone.
I just wanted something not too heavy but not too light to get invested in.
At the end of the day, it’s what you want to see. Not really how you want it to be seen.
This show is truly Intriguing.

I read the sample chapter of the light novel when Bookwalker released it back in Dec2019(?) (Before Book1 anyway).. and loved it and bought the series when it came out. I didn't even know they made an anime out of it.

Considering you were such a big fan of Kino's journey, i figured you would like this :) its your type of anime.
I'm still waiting for the show to showcase the darker moments of the original LN to see the reactions of those who watch WW just because they want to see cute fluff.
I want this to be a more light hearted Kino's Journey.
But I'm also expecting this to go into a Mahou Shoujotai/Tweeny Witches sort of direction.
