Aren't people missing the point of the song..? People are taking the lyrics so literally lol. The song isn't so much about the Zeze character as it is about IU herself, and the image she's been portraying since she started as an artist. Mostly that "aegyo" persona people seem to care so much for with k-pop. Because if someone is seen as cute, there's no way they're anything but that right!?.. Actually the whole album is pretty much her way of speaking of what she has been through in her career as an artist and in the public eye. It's about the public persona she has, the one she portrays, mixed with what people make of her; and about her own individual self, as she is and not as she's said to be. Everyone of us is two people at the same time, the person we are, our thoughts, emotions and actions; and the person others think we are by analizing us and making their own assumptions... And that's what she probably liked about the character Zezé, the way he's seen as either good or bad depending on who's watching. Much like how people online comment about her being a fox or whatever, as if people are all one dimensional and have only one way to go about life all the time with the same face. Honestly I'm not even a fan of her, but I actually liked this last album. She's not even that subtle with her work, but I guess if you aren't interested enough to care you'll only see what you want to see, or what someone else tells you to... Good luck IU :)
I really like your explanation! Her album makes so much more sense now. It's mature but also dark and fascinating. It highlights her life as a singer for sure. She's been through so much and she's expressing it. It's too bad people are lashing out on her when I'm sure this wasn't even her intention.
+High On Life Thank you, that's exaclty how I interpreted it since this album was out. It is so clear to me what she means, and I'm not even her fan too. I just casually listened to this album and liked it much more than her previous ones, so I tried to understand her lyrics and all. People like to hate so much they don't even stop to actually pay attention to what they're hating on.
i find it so amazing that there are people trying to interpret the lyrics in different ways and not just jump the bandwagon of what everyone else is saying... i found this explanation online and i think this is also what she's trying to express through her album (beware this is a long comment, but i assure you, the idea is pretty intriguing) : try to understand that artists don’t always make art simply to cater to the audience. music is also a means for an artist to express themselves. it’s not all about the consumer. this was iu’s first album where she played a large part in production. it’s her first big chance to express herself. the ep is about her trying to find a balance between being an adult and being a child, and between herself and the media’s image of herself. people who have kept up with iu know how things have been for her. she debuted at 15 and gained popularity at age 16. as is generally the case with mainstream media, she was forced into a weird position of being seen as an innocent baby girl and also being seen sexually and appealing to an older male audience. in the past few years, her love life has been under constant speculation by the media, as the mainstream gaze has continued to force her back into the young girl character. she’s gained a lot of antis in the light of her relationship becoming public. as a little girl she was sexualised, but her mature side is infantilized. it’s been a constant dichotomy between these gross tropes for her. “twenty-three” is about her own difficulties being in that stage between real adulthood and childhood; and those difficulties are fortified by the media treating her like a doll. the album pictures seemed to reflect some common features of the “lolita” trope. this is not her glorifying childhood sexual abuse, it’s her showing us the image that’s already been made for her. she plays with the boundaries of maturity and innocence because it’s a boundary she’s forced to confront, and she wants to express that in her album. iu never wanted to be seen as an oversexualised little girl. no one wants that. but now, she has chosen to present herself like that; not as a sexual object, but as insight into this facet the media has created of her. ultimately, the idea is that iu should not fit into that trope-it’s concept, now, an album concept. it’s an exaggerated view of herself. when the media unironically presents her as a lolita, everyone takes it into stride, but when she presents it herself as a means of speculation, everyone’s ready to torch her. it’s just not as two-dimensional as you want it to be.
thesupperkittylover Well, yeah, that's a more generic view, it's about her whole album. I agree with that. I also find people that criticise her lolita concept hypocritical. The industry is permeated with lolita concepts. What do people think the innocent school girl concept is about? Why do so many grown men like young girl groups wearing school uniforms and acting cute? It seems innocent, but it has some sexual undertones, they're subtle, but not even that much if you think about it. Do those men like those kind of groups only because of the music? Obviously not. IU only brought up the issue and made it visible, and it made people uncomfortable, but really, who criticises her for it is a hypocrite.
SaitouIzumi yes i agree, there a lolita concepts EVERYWHERE in kpop but that one time where IU addresses the problem and call out on it, people backlash and call her a pedophile. wheres the common sense in that? school uniforms, uncle fans, songs about 'oppa'... how can they support concept like these but by hypocrites...
actually the first time I heard the song, I thought it was interesting. I never thought that it was this addicting, and I keep on repeating this song. And I think IU is clever enough to create this song.
Zeze is my favorite song by IU. I love her song composing way, reminding me of my days when I was at this age (23). I used to write a diary and always told my story by splitting myself into two entities: one was me under the others' perspective and one was me under my own view. It somehow matches what I found she wanted to tell in the song: both the tree and Zeze were IU. The latter was IU under mundane eyes (innocent, clever, but also dirty with something hidden inside), the former was IU herself, never cared what others think of her, wanted to pacify herself, and got herself (Zeze) rid of from the others, recognizing self-esteem (kiss the leaves, take only flowers - the most beautiful thing, don't hurt the tree - herself). In Confusious countries, we have a proverb ''Purity doesn't need others to purify itself.'' and I esteem her by always keeping silent from all of those made-up stories and scandals around since then and have left behind all those stupid stuff. What a strong girl! Just a few more words after reading other comments. I myself find that IU doesn't want her to be considered as anything relating to sexuality. I listen to almost all of her songs and watch soooo many of her MVs as well as FMVs or fancams from her concert. She can appear in a sexy manner if she wants, as in a gangnam style dancing video I've watched. But it rarely happens, I even can say that it only happened once or twice in her early career, when she was young and wanted to try everything.
There are some people who think that she got some huge backlash, LOL NO SHE DIDN'T. Her concerts continued on, even well known celebrities supported and guested on her shows. Her CFs didn't get cancelled, in fact a soju company renewed the contract. She was an MC at SBS gayodaejon and performed the epic diss song 23. She's starring in a drama. She's also holding 7 concerts in China. If you look up the Gallup poll, she's still #1 in idol ranking (even when the 'controversy' broke out). I think she's also the most subscribed artist on melon. CONTINUE TO SLAY IU. This is how you respond to netizens.
hikari yuri to keep it short she had a controversy with this song. The netizens claimed that it is pedophilic. Second was with her twenty three MV claiming that it has a lollita theme.
+XxMaplerzxX there's microphones, the ones that are really high quality but super expensive that reduce outside noise and you can only hear the voice. she's using those I'm sure. even in hee concerts she sounds exactly the same as studio, even better.
I admire her because some singers would just go with the netizens and would apologize and would take the song off their album but she apologize and gave her piece about the song and is still singing this song
0:51 you know what? The background vocalist was 제휘(Je-Hwi, Kim) who composed 밤편지(All through the Night), 이지금(dlwlrma) and 언럭키(Unlucky) of IU albums, also making 디어문 Dear Moon (in OST 나의 아저씨). Travia is that Je-Hwi was only 19 years old (만으로) at the time of this clip. He has been a fan of IU before making debut as composer and arranger.
Consider how self-referential the whole Chatshire album is (taking back identity, coming of age, empowerment through self-deprecation/reflection), Zeze appears to be an allegorical approach to her feelings and moods at that point in her career. IU has a history of acknowledging social stigmas through her work. Tackling sensitive topics such as yellow journalism/media, discriminatory public personas, SNS haters/bullies, depression, suicide, love, loss, sleeping disorders etc... This whole album revolves around a heightened fantasy world liken to 'It is a mad mad world' in Alice in wonderland. Where Alice is both the victim and the heroine is forced to take on an introspective journey through the looking glass, examining various perspectives/creatures to fulfill personal growth and self-actualization. This reference also appears later in Palette and Bbibbi for example IU is a clever storyteller and artistic jester with her unique sonnets/limericks/metaphors to continue to play around public perceptions. I hope she remains pure-hearted in this approach and never loses that sense of artistic innocence and wonder and bow down to commercial pressures. Luckily years later, I think she never did. Congrats on the upcoming 918 x 12! May you continue to be unique, creative, authentic, bold, and brave! 👍
Those who commented negatively about this song didn't understood it, or even tried to. Furthermore if they just bought her album they would have understood it, it can be seen on Zeze track page, she was on a tree. Geez, the concept was her being somewhat Zeze, in the music industry.
I'm still convinced this song is actually about her coming up in the music industry. I remember when she started people thought she was mean or rude for some reason. Once they got to know her it was all about how well she played the guitar "Stroking sounds with those little fingers," how well she sang (see Good Day) "Singing of colors and sights in your ticklish voice," the clever puns she made (See Heroes), and how wise she was for someone so young and cute. Alot of artists, genuine artists, make allusions to themselves or other things in their music or artwork. So I'm pretty certain Zeze is supposed to be her and the tree is the music industry or people in the music industry.
Love your interpretation! I totally agree with you. I think she is talking about herself and how the public and industry sexualised her when she was a child. They are the people who give singers hate for "Lolita" concepts, yet they are the ones perpetuating it and buying into it.
@@MegaXavi999 No she said she found the personality of the character charming and sexy. As in a Zeze who has grown up but has retained that personality. Her statement was mistranslated and antis started spreading it everywhere.
From the lyrics, I don't get why people hate her. Well, everyone have their own opinion. I still love IU and her music. She's really talented, unique and so cute
I just think this 'naughty' doesn't mean what you guys think 'naughty'..... feels like the name of 'IU' made this song flirty, but without all those elements, it is just one of mischievous songs.
i personally think IU wrote the lyrics in the perspective of the audience. she garnered interest when the audience started seeing her as a lolita; even though she was called the "nation's little sister/daughter" so many still blatantly expressed interest in her just because they found her like an easy sexual targeti feel like IU's essentially trying to parody what the public has created for her, a sexual image of a young, easy girl to take advantage of, so she wrote these suggestive lyrics as if people were saying it about her. it's like she's saying, "i am zeze, a young boy who is only a character and cannot speak up against these pedophilic opinions to protect myself." even when the controversy hit, she couldn't say that this is how she wrote the song, because there would only be more backlash and hate and the public would go crazy saying "no one thought of you that way! you're the problematic one thinking that people depicted you as a lolita! stop making things up to protect your image!" and so on, so she had to respond with just saying that her interpretation was different. honestly, she's been objectified and sexualized ever since she was 15, there would be no reason for her to write a song suggesting pedophilia unless it would be to parody what the public said of her.
I completely agree with this! The lyrics in Zeze are a thematic companion to Twenty-Tree. After reading your thoughts, I also thought that the "tree" in the song sounds like a symbolic representation of the Kpop industry. Which makes sense with the lyrics "climb up me", "take the only flower" as awards, and the sense of directed rules of not hurting said tree structure. Honestly it makes so much sense that she's low-key critiquing the Kpop industry with these two songs (I haven't checked all the lyrics for the other ones on the album), and also did not seek to promote it on charting music shows because she doesn't need to.
this is exactly the reason. IU was zeze for her entire career. IN this song, Zeze is the public, IU is the predator. that why it makes the public uncomfortable, because she turns the table against the them. Now that the public is the prey. IU is just trying to put the mirror up to the public for them to feel what she been feeling this entire time. She is ofcourse not blaming the public, but she merely pointing out the way that young female entertainers are consumed by the general public, even unconsciously. THe public is blaming her for instigating pedophilia intentions, without realizing their nature of the consumption is pedophilia to begin with. ANd it's ironic for people to be mad at her now from here regarding this issue. Why? It's because they were not upset when she was actually used from her earlier career till now as AN ACTUAL TARGET for pedophile. Yet, they are upset now when she is on the other side of the table? Are they upset now that a former target is now the predator? I cannot comprehend that logic. Many argued that no one force IU to have the image she had earlier in her career. That is true. IU, compare to other young female idols, actually have a higher self-awareness. She invited/created that image herself. She know that will be how she can sell her music in the society she is in. She is not blaming the public, she is merely POINTING out what they have been obliviously this whole time. She is one of the luckier one who know what she was doing, but that does not mean the other young female idols did. Looking at how young female idols are still create and market nowadays. It's sad that the public is only mad about pedophilia when it throw right in their face, get upset, and then come back and consume the same stuff. It's hypocritical for people to say IU is a pedophile when they all are in some unconscious way. All in all, I see the backlash against IU is not about moral, right or wrong. It just people are being upset that she reveal the inconvenient truth to them. THey are upset that she let them see how bad they actually look.
That makes so much sense! In the song Glasses, there's the line " Even if someone wrote me a hint I can’t read it because it’s written too small I can only start digging little by little Still, I don’t want to wear glasses" It could easily refer to the ignorance of Kpop fans and their refusal to accept the realities of their Idols. They fans refusing to look at the dark side of the industry, instead only enjoying the products of Idol's suffering.
The song that make IU's staff cried when she include it in the song list for her 10th year debut anniversary concerts, coz it reminds them to the difficult time that IU face due to misinterpretation of the song by knezt. She wrote this song actually based on a children story in Brazil about the boy and the orange tree. Public mistook it as song abt being lolita n encouraging pedophile..coz in the lyrics there's a line saying 'come climb me'. Sometimes people just read too much into the song - maybe bcoz IU at 22/23 at the time already so accomplished and wrote so many wonderful songs.. Mature beyond her age but with young girl look.. Not easy being talented young and beautiful like IU.. There will always some who envious and jealous of her accomplishment, even now after more than 10 yrs in the industry..
Climb up me Climb up me Climb up me Climb up me Climb up me Climb up me
Somehow IU imaginary mind are so out there, she real but it not what people want, she just do what she thinks in her mind, i dont care what people say, i still really respect IU...
Despite Zeze's not favorable reception bcoz of its complicated meaning and poetry..i really love the song..As an international fan., when you look at IU's career frm 2008 til 2015, you can easily interpret that Zeze is her.. even though its inspired by a book.. Im just SAD that its her First self produce album as part of her healing process..and she can't promote it properly at that time..To me, All Chatshire album songs are incredible, they are written and compose with a mind of sharing her life struggle to her fans and listerners at that time.. Since we are in a modern era now, hopefully most of us will be openminded and understanding in terms of how artists and idols expresses themselves thru their music..☺️
I just don't get why people are so angry? Yes, her inspiration for this song was from the tale/book and the korean book publisher doesn't like how she interpretted it the way she did. BUT as an ARTIST, isin't it their job to find inspiration from all sorts of things to come up with songs/art/fashion based on their own interpretation? That's the beauty of art and music, imagine if she just wrote the song based on what the author of the book wrote, then wouldn't that just be copying? And this is her first time writing all her songs in the album and i love that the lyrics aren't just about the usual boy-meets-girl-falls-in-love or some nonsense. All her songs have a backstory and depth. It's really a shame how people can't appreciate art sometimes.
+PincessSakura9 just fyi, it was the 'korean publisher' that had an opinion about her song, not the author. therefore it was another 3rd party interpretation that is not reflective of the author's opinion
+Tuyết Nhi honestly she was talking about pedophile concepts but zeze was reflecting HERSELF. did you not understand that iu was challenging the music industry's views on girl images? we see all those 15 year old girls, wearing short short skirts, skimpy outfits, singing about their oppas. they are WORSHIPPED by uncle fans but when iu addresses this topic everyone back lashes on her. ius image was sexualized herself back then. started with marshmellow, boo, good day... she IS zeze and every character in her book is pieces of her.
Tuyết Nhi In her apology letter, she mentioned that it wasn't the boy she found "sexy" but more the ambiguity of his temper or temper itself. Like how people find confidence sexy. So if i say i like seeing kids being confident does that automatically make me a pedophilia?? Because i think confidence is sexy. And wtf the hole in the tree???? Lets be real i dont think that signifies anything R-18, stop finding flaws with every single thing. It doesn't make sense. Next, you might as well say that her hair is disrespectful to cancer patients because that's how unrelated the hole in the tree is? As for the books, like her whole album and her song, 23 its just comparing contradictions. "Delicate" and "Discipline" are contradictions and the Leon book also represents contradictions because the character Leon is a twelve yr old girl who smokes and plays with guns and yet she's also delicate in a sense that she falls in love. There's just so many ways to find fault/defend IU but my point is. As an artist, IU deserves to release songs creatively without being bashed and forced to apologize. How else will the artistic industry grow if not?
Yeah, like even the Producer of the movie "Hope" goes against her, the publisher of the book goes against her, 2/3 of Korean fans, 1/2 Chinese fans and almost all of Vietnamese fans... they all must be wrong. At least she apologize, but you know what, now her fans started to blamed her boyfriend for this, and her apology seems more like "yeah I admitted that it's my fault, whatever, it's you who interpreted it wrongly. Yeah the problem is you."
for those who don't know, this song is inspired in a classic romance of brazilian literature, "Meu Pé de Laranja Lima" (the translation is "My Sweet-Orange Tree" i guess). the lyrics tell the tree's perspective in the story line. you can search for the book, it is amazing !!
Let's not talk about the bad influence or not. I love this special clip version of Zeze. This version has different instruments compare to album version, it sounds smoother and not as noisy as the album version, and the guy as back-vocal make the whole song sounds even better DAEBAK~
***** Not all Korean fans think like that, just some knetizens with too much time on their hands and hate. By the way, I'm not a fan of her, I'm Cassiopeia fan (I love TVXQ and JYJ) and a Cloud (Rain fan) and I know all this media manipulation and netizens craziness, to well. I just love the songs and think she has a great live voice.
Like I said, I'm not a fan so I don't know how bad things are, I don't follow Naver or Pan to read about IU. Hope things will go better for her 'coz she is a great young voice. If you are a fan of her and a Korean and have time maybe you should speak with other Korean fans and trying post good things about her and defend her. The more the merrier. Good luck, seems like she needs it. I will never ever get why Kpeople are so adamant with their hate.

Yeah, and before the controversy the song was about an orange tree that could communicate with a and was friends with a somewhat naughty little boy. During the controversy the song was about an orange tree that could communicate with a and was friends with a somewhat naughty little boy. After the controversy the song was about an orange tree....
lol i find it so funny that there are foreign fans here going on and on about the controversy, but i read most of the korean comments and they're all just saying how lovely iu is and how much they enjoy the song...
Exactly!! International fans need to realise that the translations are not going to be 100% accurate, for example the word 'dirty' in this is not meant in a sexual way but in the literal meaning 'dirty, filthy' as in dirt (it was symbolising the abuse and poverty).
In my opinion this song portrays IU's hardships in such a young age without any support. little Zeze, who needs to climb up his problems and kiss the solutions. A kid who need to live to find experience. IU voice is a third party advice who tells IU what to do. the controversy around this song is ridiculous.
I find it ridiculous that some critics are saying that IU "misinterpreted" the character of Zezé... lmao, it's up to the reader to interpret a character however he or she wants. Writing is a form of art, and all pieces of art are allowed to be defined differently by each person.
@@mogumogu7774 The publisher apologized to IU, few days after the start of the controversy, saying they were sorry for not respecting the diversity in interpretation.
It's kinda obvious that the lyrics she wrote was about herself. I mean, in my opinion, phrases like " stroking sounds with those little fingers" , IU plays guitar and there's an interview i forgot which but she said that she doesn't like her small hands because they're make her face looks big.. "singing of colours and sights in your ticklish voice" she's a singer(obviously). "Look at those blushing cheeks, like bloomed flowers, you're innocent but so clever, so naive like a child but so dirty, there's no way to know what inside ya", ever since her scandal with Eunhyuk, some people don't see her the same way(the cute innocent image) . Some of them think that she was acting all innocent because they think that behind the screen she's different and stuff. That's why in 23, she wrote "pretend to be a fox that pretends to be a bear that pretends to be a fox or completely different one. Which one? " she asked the public which one is it even though shes being sarcastic, "choose only one whatever it is, being seen thru the sunglasses, I'm used to it now". So the lyrics in the zeze song was talking about IU indirectly. Her mistake was that she chose zeze that makes people think she was talking about zeze. I don't think she wants to sexualise the 5 year old zeze. She just used his characteristics which finds it sexy/ interesting. Not about physically sexy and interesting but the characteristics are sexy and interesting to her. People may misunderstood her for saying that but I don't think she intentionally wanna make it sound pedophillic to some people. She just wants to express about herself thru her songs. So yeah... That's my opinion..
I agree with you. For a lot of those same reasons I always felt like she was indirectly talking about herself in some manner as she usually does. Her music can be very deep so I'd expect that even upon hearing of the controversy after watching all her videos, etc. I felt that based on her previous work and especially her apology letter (after reading more articles on the subject) that she would have the mind to read even a simple children's book and look so abstractly into the smallest details of personality and temperament and honestly create her artful, soulful music from those ideas without any relation to what the literal understanding of the original work is. Her mistake, like you said, was basically using Zeze as she did and not anticipating that others would not only not see her viewpoint or interpretation like most art, but also get the completely wrong idea from her song and connect it to loli/sexualizing children. It was too risky in my opinion to put out, although extremely catchy. I respect that she blamed herself for everything including not being an experienced enough writer, not many people can be humble enough to say that, especially when they know they are, but I feel more where the fault really lies is her management team. I understand that it's easy to blame the artist and that although most people around her maybe don't want to argue with an artist and their art, especially a solo artist who is known for producing great, amazing, deep, beautifully catchy songs, but there should've been others involved in proof testing the song's lyrics and album cover and material to make sure it wasn't anything too risky for the public. Of course, everything is always 20/20 vision in hindsight, but I believe although she did write the music, everyone else who's responsible for her like her label etc. is at fault too. They should've caught it or at least voiced their opinion to her. But either way, it's more or less done with now, hopefully. She's smart though, at least she'll definitely learn from the experience and grow even more as a mainstream musician while also learning the right balance for everything she puts out so it doesn't potentially come off wrong to her audience and fans. Great music IU, keep it up. Fighting! lol
Well I've been reading lots of comments . Most people don't think that IU was being inappropriate (including me ) but people have been making valid points about the Korean format and understanding the language that IU used. Even so, it is still all based on speculation. Even Koreans can't know exactly what IUs point is since the language that is used is largely metaphorical leaving this song without a doubt open to interpretation. There is and never will be concrete evidence for either this song being inappropriate or it being a metaphor for her experience in the entertainment industry.
These netizens are just too much..if u don't like her music, just don't bother to listen We, real fans, will always accept her choices, her styles and her tastes and we will always try to understand what she exactly means. Instead of judging her, at least go n try to make ur mess life and perspective better!!!!!!!!!!
IU is a strong woman, what ever happen to IU, We (ueana) will always support u. Although we not beside u when u sad or happy, but i want u to know that we always at behind u to support u. Love u IU ^3^. i love this song 'zeze' and knee, >_
[Article] DLWLRMA Magazine - July 2020 Understanding 'ZeZe' and the Orange Tree by EJG IU's song ‘Zeze’ was released on 2015 as part of her ‘Chat-Shire’ album. It was written by IU from the viewpoint of an orange tree from the book "My Sweet Orange Tree" by José Mauro de Vasconcelos. My thoughts and analysis that may contain some spoilers: • Prior to reading the book, I already had an idea that it will tackle sensitive issues like poverty and child abuse. The main character, Zeze, a 5-year-old boy who is mischievous and a little advanced for his age experienced beating from his own family. • Children are sensitive and they would believe whatever people say. In the story, his young mind already absorbed that he's evil and a devil was born in his heart because that's what he's been told many times. Which is why whenever he gets into trouble, he’d say it was the work of the devil inside him. From my own analysis, I can say that he constantly does the naughty pranks because of lack of affection. It’s his only way to get attention. As the story unfolds, the strangers he would meet would eventually see that he is a good and a sweet child after all. • Zeze found comfort through his imagination along with the orange tree in their backyard. He thinks that the tree could speak to him like a real person. This is an interesting part for me because in the book, they really had actual conversations. It became a daily routine for him to talk to the tree telling how his everyday life went on. After much thought, I realized that maybe, Zeze finding a friend in a form of this tree was an escape from the reality of his cruel life. At least, someone listens and understands. • Another character named Manuel became Zeze's good friend. With Manuel, he found the father figure he never had. Manuel became his only family, the only person who made him feel loved. And because he is a child deprived of these things, he became vulnerable by the acts of kindness shown to him by Manuel. The child's soft spot is gradually shown. • There were also moments when Zeze had thoughts of suicide. He had thoughts that he shouldn't have been born. The psychological effects of maltreatment to children could be seen here. • The orange tree, being the imaginary talking companion of Zeze, also plays a significant symbolism in the story - a friend he cannot afford to lose. The tree would have an extremely sad ending. In connection to IU's lyrics, the duality of Zeze's character interests IU a lot. The song became controversial years ago because IU was accused of being a pedophile, sexualizing a young boy in this song. If a person looks through IU's lyrics without reading the whole book, it'll really cause confusion and misunderstanding. To mention some points: "Climb up me" - in the story, Zeze often plays on the orange tree's branches, pretending to ride on a horse. It's actually quite typical for the tree to ask Zeze to climb on itself. "Pick my only flower/take the Flower" - in the story, the tree only had one flower. And the part where it was mentioned was a fairly important and sad scene, not a sensual one. There is nothing sexual here. The cover art for the album shows a young boy with stockings. Zeze used the stockings on one of his childish pranks. There is nothing sexual there too. In defense of IU, we all have different perceptions and interpretations when it comes to arts and music. We never know what's exactly running into the minds of artists. But for me, after reading the book, I know one thing is for sure. IU's song, ‘Zeze’ sends a deep, different kind of message which, unfortunately, some people refused to see and understand.
What's not clear? It's a song with sexual undertones about an abused 5 year old character. I still don't understand what was going through her head when she described him as "sexy"
@@geto_suguru_simp that’s the whole point?? zezé is her, she’s zezé; the whole song is about the industry that sexualized her and used her. she told her story through zezé... i genuinely don’t get if you’re against the song or for the song?? like,,, did you not get the message or what?
@@juzahyodo that doesn't excuse that she herself said she thinks zeze is a sexy character and the drawing of zeze in fishnets and high heels on her album cover. If this song was supposed to be a sort of a metaphor for IU, it was poorly executed because of these things
2023, this will forever be a masterpiece. A lot of companies debuting young groups ages 13 and up, especially female groups. I hope they won't experience what IU had felt when she was a teenager. Growing up in the eyes of the public and had them sexualizing you at a young age...IU already gave a warning through this song.
IU is a beast, I love that she put this song out. 23, Zeze, and Bbibbi were generally F U's to the kpop industry and netizens (Who think they have more power than they do. They only have the power that you LET them have.) I can't wait to hear what she releases next, and I don't think it will be a 'Screw You' song, it will be something more in IU's traditional style. (fingers crossed).
The weirdest part of this controversy is that the country where the story originated from can't find anything wrong with IU's lyrics. Either their all "Lolicon" worshippers or pedophiles in hiding. People saying that the part "Climb up me" has sexual connotations doesn't even know that this line came from the book and was delivered/said by the "tree" itself. People saying that the little boy in the album cover was butt naked needs their eyes checked. He was obviously wearing khaki's. Or if you prefer, he was wearing an above the knee shorts.
People like to hate so much they don't even stop to actually pay attention to what they're hating on.
i find it so amazing that there are people trying to interpret the lyrics in different ways and not just jump the bandwagon of what everyone else is saying... i found this explanation online and i think this is also what she's trying to express through her album
(beware this is a long comment, but i assure you, the idea is pretty intriguing) : try to understand that artists don’t always make art simply to cater to the audience. music is also a means for an artist to express themselves. it’s not all about the consumer.
this was iu’s first album where she played a large part in production. it’s her first big chance to express herself. the ep is about her trying to find a balance between being an adult and being a child, and between herself and the media’s image of herself.
people who have kept up with iu know how things have been for her. she debuted at 15 and gained popularity at age 16. as is generally the case with mainstream media, she was forced into a weird position of being seen as an innocent baby girl and also being seen sexually and appealing to an older male audience. in the past few years, her love life has been under constant speculation by the media, as the mainstream gaze has continued to force her back into the young girl character. she’s gained a lot of antis in the light of her relationship becoming public. as a little girl she was sexualised, but her mature side is infantilized. it’s been a constant dichotomy between these gross tropes for her.
“twenty-three” is about her own difficulties being in that stage between real adulthood and childhood; and those difficulties are fortified by the media treating her like a doll. the album pictures seemed to reflect some common features of the “lolita” trope. this is not her glorifying childhood sexual abuse, it’s her showing us the image that’s already been made for her. she plays with the boundaries of maturity and innocence because it’s a boundary she’s forced to confront, and she wants to express that in her album.
iu never wanted to be seen as an oversexualised little girl. no one wants that. but now, she has chosen to present herself like that; not as a sexual object, but as insight into this facet the media has created of her. ultimately, the idea is that iu should not fit into that trope-it’s concept, now, an album concept. it’s an exaggerated view of herself. when the media unironically presents her as a lolita, everyone takes it into stride, but when she presents it herself as a means of speculation, everyone’s ready to torch her. it’s just not as two-dimensional as you want it to be.
thesupperkittylover
Well, yeah, that's a more generic view, it's about her whole album.

I agree w/ u

Who was 23 dissing? o:
+kedd netizens.
IU❤💘💘💘
marix I don't understand why what happened exactly to my lovely iu??
hikari yuri to keep it short she had a controversy with this song. The netizens claimed that it is pedophilic. Second was with her twenty three MV claiming that it has a lollita theme.
her voice sounds exactly like the studio ver. wtf
It is possible that they auto-tuned it.
+Yuki Vin I mean though, since they're performing outside, why can't I hear any wind or other noise?
+XxMaplerzxX there's microphones, the ones that are really high quality but super expensive that reduce outside noise and you can only hear the voice. she's using those I'm sure. even in hee concerts she sounds exactly the same as studio, even better.
*****
I did say that it's possible, I'm not accusing her.
I think there are just some tweaks made but her real voice still shines, as usual
The man playing the guitar and singing with her sings so well, I prefer his voice over the one in the album.
he's jehwi...jehwi :)... thia guy is so mysterious. but then it's good to hear his masterpiece once in a while
and i keep wondering that i really interest with iu or people behind her back because most of them is so talented. she know her person very well
Teru Teru Bozu Shi yep he composed a few IU songs and he was only 19 in this clip
I admire her because some singers would just go with the netizens and would apologize and would take the song off their album but she apologize and gave her piece about the song and is still singing this song
ikr that's why i love her so much

we got this instead of live performance in TV every week ?...I think it's better :)
there will be another special clip on Nov 6 :))
Is this like live? Daaaaamn. It doesn't sound live. She did so well that it can be released as a studio version.
IU is truly amazing

I love this song, I love IU unconditionally. We shouldn't blame everything on her, just enjoy her style, her music and her afford.

She's really just talking abt herself ppl are just in denial
Myah Gibson
But IU herself said that she was referring to Zezé because she found the character “charming and sexy”... disturbing honestly.
@@MegaXavi999 No she said she found the personality of the character charming and sexy. As in a Zeze who has grown up but has retained that personality. Her statement was mistranslated and antis started spreading it everywhere.
Thats a cooler perspective than mine, I thought she in the trees perspective😖
From the lyrics, I don't get why people hate her. Well, everyone have their own opinion. I still love IU and her music. She's really talented, unique and so cute
I just think this 'naughty' doesn't mean what you guys think 'naughty'..... feels like the name of 'IU' made this song flirty, but without all those elements, it is just one of mischievous songs.
+Michelle Kang and the teaser that IU previously made didn't have any element of sexualization
She doesn't say naughty in the song though. She says "dirty" and "fantasies I can't say out loud" That's why everyones freaking out.
People always associate naughty with sexual meanings idk why
i personally think IU wrote the lyrics in the perspective of the audience. she garnered interest when the audience started seeing her as a lolita; even though she was called the "nation's little sister/daughter" so many still blatantly expressed interest in her just because they found her like an easy sexual targeti feel like IU's essentially trying to parody what the public has created for her, a sexual image of a young, easy girl to take advantage of, so she wrote these suggestive lyrics as if people were saying it about her. it's like she's saying, "i am zeze, a young boy who is only a character and cannot speak up against these pedophilic opinions to protect myself."
even when the controversy hit, she couldn't say that this is how she wrote the song, because there would only be more backlash and hate and the public would go crazy saying "no one thought of you that way! you're the problematic one thinking that people depicted you as a lolita! stop making things up to protect your image!" and so on, so she had to respond with just saying that her interpretation was different.
honestly, she's been objectified and sexualized ever since she was 15, there would be no reason for her to write a song suggesting pedophilia unless it would be to parody what the public said of her.
In the song Glasses, there's the line
" Even if someone wrote me a hint
I can’t read it because it’s written too small
I can only start digging little by little
Still, I don’t want to wear glasses"
It could easily refer to the ignorance of Kpop fans and their refusal to accept the realities of their Idols. They fans refusing to look at the dark side of the industry, instead only enjoying the products of Idol's suffering.
Charlotte nailed it. just plain stupid hypocrisy of man kind.
straight up
The song that make IU's staff cried when she include it in the song list for her 10th year debut anniversary concerts, coz it reminds them to the difficult time that IU face due to misinterpretation of the song by knezt. There will always some who envious and jealous of her accomplishment, even now after more than 10 yrs in the industry..
only real artist can understands the real meaning of her song ...and iu was a genius artist ,she opened the eyes of the public..

i think iu is amazing bc she admires the souls of people, not their outer appearances.
that's what she means by she likes the boy's charm

This is actually my favorite track out of her whole album and it sounds amazing live. ;-;
+Sotong_Q thank you for your clarification! I have edited my post accordingly :>
Tuyết Nhi
In her apology letter, she mentioned that it wasn't the boy she found "sexy" but more the ambiguity of his temper or temper itself.

I got curious about this song since I heard about the controversy...now I'm wondering why there were hates on this good song?
It was my favorite song D: Idk. what throws me off is the drawing of the boy o.o
The lyrics contain sexual metaphor towards a five year old boy.
I know right
you mean a five year old fictional character from a book
I heard he is not fictional. He's inspired by the author's childhood.
Let's not talk about the bad influence or not.
I love this special clip version of Zeze. This version has different instruments compare to album version, it sounds smoother and not as noisy as the album version, and the guy as back-vocal make the whole song sounds even better DAEBAK~
I love her voice and this album shows she matured. She will pass this witch hunt, her fans should stay strong beside her.
+noangeleyes2 Well said!
I will never ever get why Kpeople are so adamant with their hate.

lol i find it so funny that there are foreign fans here going on and on about the controversy, but i read most of the korean comments and they're all just saying how lovely iu is and how much they enjoy the song...
Exactly!! International fans need to realise that the translations are not going to be 100% accurate, for example the word 'dirty' in this is not meant in a sexual way but in the literal meaning 'dirty, filthy' as in dirt (it was symbolising the abuse and poverty).
lol true!
Jamie K. Thought that korean netizen was the first one bring out this controversy, that s why international fans defend for her.
Korean netizens are the ones who sparked this controversy though

In my opinion this song portrays IU's hardships in such a young age without any support. little Zeze, who needs to climb up his problems and kiss the solutions. A kid who need to live to find experience.

Its great seeing brazilian literature inspiring artists around the world, makes me really proud

[Article] DLWLRMA Magazine - July 2020
Understanding 'ZeZe' and the Orange Tree by EJG
IU's song ‘Zeze’ was released on 2015 as part of her ‘Chat-Shire’ album. It was written by IU from the viewpoint of an orange tree from the book "My Sweet Orange Tree" by José Mauro de Vasconcelos. My thoughts and analysis that may contain some spoilers:
• Prior to reading the book, I already had an idea that it will tackle sensitive issues like poverty and child abuse.
To mention some points:
"Climb up me" - in the story, Zeze often plays on the orange tree's branches, pretending to ride on a horse.
I don't get why people get offended by the lyrics of Zeze. But this is my favourite song of chat shire.
It’s on spotify tho
@@linimanagpure284 spotify offers discount tho. U will only have to pay half the price
IU is a great singer , I love this song
omg.her voice is exactly the same with the recorded one. i can say her voice when live is more better.
I noticed this just now. But the male's voice here is her guitarist. Cool voice that complimented well with IU's in this song!
Live versions of IU are way better than recorded ones..
Whatever other people think, this is actually a GREAT song.
