The difference in the two swings reminds me of the one plane versus two plane swings in the golf world that Jim Hardy came up with. In summary Hardy’s two plane swing is more driven by the arms and hands with the body reacting to what the arm club unit does. The arms and club are more disconnected and in front of the body. The one plane swing is more of a full body swing driven by the big muscles in the body. Both work of course but in general the two plane swing can hit the ball farther but is less repeatable and the one plane swing is more consistent with less power.

Hey Dustin, thanks for the comment! You're absolutely correct in a big difference between a good baseball swing and a good golf swing is the disconnection.... we can swing much faster with the disconnection because it's more of a throw/release, however in golf it would be far less consistent... the good news is that we don't need to hit the baseball straight, therefore it's much more advantageous to swing with more speed in baseball swing. Very nice analogy!

Question. Why do you have ur guys making contact with the left arm extended? I’ve worked with the hitting coach for the Mets and blue jays. They both never have told me to have the left arm extended at contact.

Hey Kolby, thanks for the question! Firstly, this is why I consult with many professional hitting coaches... the problem is that normally they are just retired players trying to teach what they feel or what the see with bias... versus how the swing works on a biomechanical and physics level. In physics, the fastest moving point of a swing is with the pendulum reaches it's lowest point according to pendulum velocity... this isn't quite the same as a swing but the math is still the same... translated, the fastest moving point of the swing is when the bat lines up with the lead arm... if that's when the bat is moving it's fastest, that would be ideal impact as we would be able to transfer optimal energy into the ball.
The other issue, is you will see examples of good hitters making a compensated swing where they are not in this position, that doesn't mean it's a bad swing, just less than ideal. We should always be striving for perfect impact with a swing that provides good hits before and after optimal timing... therefore giving us maximum room for error.
The other bigger issue is when players that are good hitters with bad swings... which happens all the time. There's nothing wrong with hitting good with a bad swing, it's just not something that should be taught to hitter that need help excelling at hitting.
Hope this makes sense! Thanks so much again for the question!

You're at extention as you're just making contact. That is definitely not "more efficient". The first swing was better.

Hey Colt, thanks for the comment! The fastest moving point of hinge and lever mechanics is when the two line up... aka the lead arm and the bat form a straight line. Pure efficiency would be striking the ball when the bat is moving at it's fastest point and also moving directly through the ball. Both of these swings were good, as they both went over the fence, however the swing where he stayed on the ball, didn't look as good, but the ball went much further, due to these efficiencies. Hope this helps clear things up!

Neither one of those swings were home runs especially the second one.... that one went straight up

The proper way to swing can literally be taught in 20 minutes probably less... I told my 7 year old to do three simple steps and that was it
