Make sure you ask for a rain check on the peach and nectarine sale. I work at qfc(Kroger store) and if we are out of stock on a sale item, a customer can request a rain check to buy the item at that price at a later date. It's good for 30 days

We are empty nesters and I still go full force when I see clearance stickers. I can always share what I find! A local farm sells 20lb bags of onions for $3. Last week he had a few bags that were starting to sprout so he listed them at $3 for 2 bags. Yes, I now have 40lbs of onions!

Frozen onions thaw wet and squishy. But are great in soups and stews, sauces and sautéed with ground meats. I can caramelize them and add to any dish that uses cooked onions.

Nice finds! Growing up, my Mother taught me the magic that is the rain check. Are they out of the deal of the week item? Are they out of something you don't need now, but might want later and the price is great? RAIN CHECK! For those not familiar with getting one, all you do is go to customer service and ask for a rain check for the advertised sale items that are sold out. It's nice if you bring an ad, just to make things easier. Sometimes the cashier can give you one. The store will ask how many you want of the sold item (example - 5 lbs of peaches, please) and they will give you a rain check coupon to buy them when they come back in stock. The best part is the coupon is usually good for a month. If in a month the price of peaches have gone up, you still have your .99/lb deal!

We do pay a bit more at times, but as you come closer to the empty nest, please consider helping locally owned producers make a living. Also, support companies using reduce, reuse, recycle methods as much as possible. Every bit helps. Think about long term health of the planet might be worth the money spent. Actually yes, it depends on that specific store though. Most grocery stores have specific days when they'll go through and pull things for mark downs . The best/ only way to find out those specific days however is by going to the store different days of the week till you notice that pattern (or if a friend tells you). Even if a store is apart of a chain, they may not have an actual company issued day for certain markdown types as long as they happen within the week/ month.

For the last 3-4 weeks we have mainly concentrated on pantry items. My chest freezer was so full I could barely close it. There is stuff in there that I bought last year. So, we decided that we are going to try to at least get it down to about half and use up some of that older stuff before buying any newer meat or other freezer items. We are down to about 3/4 full now so we are making progress. I know it isn't a great time to do this (economy) wise, but if I don't eat through some of this stuff it wont be any good anymore.
I am hoping when I start stocking back up, I can find some good clearance prices.

sure that's a TON of food...but there's 6 people in your house...I'd buy all the clearance deals too since groceries are so expensive now.

I have a system when it comes to buying meat. I try to only buy meat when it’s on sale……a good sale. Then, buy as much as you can afford and store. Omg! Those pork chops! I would have bought them all! I just put 120 pounds of chicken quarters that I got for $.64 a pound in my freezer. Do we get to see a better look at the new freezer? How full do you have it? I just filled all freezer space I have on sale items…mostly sale items. You got nice deals on that meat!

@@rachelday9585 I know. I saw it. I’m just very curious on its organization. It looked like that’s what she was putting in it when she showed it. I’m also curious how full it is. Mine are stuffed. I feel better about that when I see others do it too. Lol. I saw that exact freezer a few days after she showed hers when I was at Lowe’s. That thing is massive. If I had room, I may have bought it.

I do the same with meat. I only buy meat on great sale and put it in the deep freezer. Then each week, I plan meals based on what’s in the freezer. Doing it this way, I never pay full price for meat.

Christine, what days or times do you go to a smiths to score all those great deals? I'm in my local smiths (Las Vegas), and I can never find those reduced price stuff. What a great deal on those ground beef packages!!

I just ask people who are restocking/working in the area if they know what day/time the store usually does mark downs. Most of them are happy enough to answer, and I find it's usually a Thursday or a Monday marking down in preparation for the weekend shoppers or the leftovers/unpicked stuff from the weekend!

I have gotten so good at finding clearance items thanks to Christine. Last week I found dairy free chobani yogurt for 50% off, I only picked up 2 because that was all that was marked down. Then Saturday I went back and there were several dozen marked down incorrectly for $0.64 each, it was suppose to be 50% off and they normally cost $1.99. So I got 6 for $3.84. My local Stop and Shop started doing clearance items in the last year. They started having clearance produce in the last 6 or so months and originally everything would be marked down to $0.99 but I guess it's popular because last week all the clearance produce was $1.99.
