- As healthcare workers we deal with a lot of gross things. It's our job and for the most part, we are used to it! In fact, we expect to get grossed out on a daily basis, but eventually you just become pretty numb to it! However, there is always that ONE thing that some people can't handle. Ask any healthcare worker you know and they will tell you...I promise. I worked both as an ER nurse and an Interventional Radiology nurse so everything you talked about brought back "fond" memories. Here's my disaster. A patient vomiting feces. It was so awful I started vomiting in a kick bucket and to add to my humiliation at making my patient feel bad, every time I retched, I farted and peed my pants.
🤣 thank you for that and I thought I was having a bad day.
If I was the patient, seeing my nurse gag, fart and pee would have made me feel better ☺ if I was embarassed

Oh my Goodness, that's both of mine at the same time!! Poor You! Hope you were okl?. How are you if someone is bleeding?. I am fine,, they can bleed to their hearts content, well not really , i wouldn't let that happen but you know what i mean.
I’m an ER doctor. I see everything on a daily basis. As a human being, I too get grossed out sometimes. But as a doctor who is helping sick and vulnerable patients (sometimes fighting for their lives and afraid), I never let it show. Never. It helps them maintain some dignity.
Blessings on you, that trait of caring for dignity is so important. It's the first thing I notice about caregivers.
As a stage 4 breast cancer patient, I’ve been through horrific things. Mastectomy, hair loss, radiation, liver resection, sepsis, 12 years of chemo, SBRT….by far the worst was c-diff. (A hospital acquired infection). It was so embarrassing and disgusting plus, I was septic and they wanted to pull my colon (which I refused) I’m fortunate that I’ve recovered and am still here, but c-diff was the worst of all.
Dignity is SO important when you’ve lost control of everything. I’m fortunate that all my doctors, and most nurses were kind and behaved like it was ok. I can tell you, although it was a decade ago, I see see the faces of the few nurses who couldn’t hide disgust. I guarantee they weren’t as grossed out as me, and they should not have been allowed near me if they felt that way.
Thank you for remembering that patients need the feeling that their doc isn’t grossed out, even if he or she is. It is a kindness that goes farther than you think.
Most of these people writing about these unfortunates are not physicians. I don't know what they're teaching nurses and other medical support people these days, but it sure isn't ethics, empathy, and patient dignity. Venting on the internet--disgraceful.

I worked in dentistry. The closest I ever came to hurling in the office was when an elderly patient with dementia who was not getting proper care came in. I removed the patient's dentures to clean them up. Oh. My. ****. I have no words to describe what was under those dentures. They had to have been left in there and not cleaned for a Very Long Time. I got to get the horrific gunk off the dentures while a specialist came in to handle the ulcerated tissues underneath. Disgusting, stomach-turning experience for everyone involved, and I don't think the patient ever realised there was anything wrong. I wish I'd scraped the nastiness off those dentures and threw it at the knuckleheads who were supposed to be taking care of that patient. No excuse. NONE.
As a CNA I am very sorry that you had to deal with that. If that ever happens again you call Adult Protective Services you find out which facility this patient came from and you report them immediately.
@@Loveroffood41 I believe the specialist who came in contacted the facility that was supposed to be caring for the patient, and then contacted the patient's family. I agree that APS should have been called in, because it was a clear case of neglect. No one should be working in geriatric care who can't handle maintaining the dentures of every patient. They don't get gross if you clean them every day, folks.

Knowing how things are in some of these facilities if someone removes the dentures you probably never would see them again and thats talking about clean ones so you know dirty ones would be disposed of. The workers can sometimes couldn’t care Less
These examples are why I am SO glad there are people that can handle medical procedures. I can’t do it, so thank you all of you: EMTs, doctors, nurses, police, paramedics, hospital housekeeping, lab techs, med assistants and anyone else I didn’t mention. Thank you
Right on! Me too..I could care less about vomit and poop. They should treat us with utmost respect for actually doing the work itself instead of ordering us around......otherwise I QUIT!!! these horrid jobs are a dime a dozen
You could do it if it was your kid or a loved one, you do what you have to do. We all work for a paycheck, but sometime you have to love the people you are working for. That is the only way we get through it, even when we do not really like a patient they are still human beings that need help in spite of themselves. I had a patient that was in his last days with liver failure, and dementia on top of that, and I do not know what it was but I just did not like him from the first time I saw him. That just happens sometimes and you get past it. He weighed about 520 pounds but oddly while he was a very big man and his liver was enormous he had the frame for it, you would not think to look at him he weighed that much. He used to get out of his bed and try to wander off, when we were lucky we would catch him trying to get out of bed. One time he was assigned to me and I went to his room and he was not there, I looked all over for him and could not find him. I got my RN involved and she got the staff all looking for him, closets, you name it, dining room, break room, everywhere. Well, how embarrassing, he was on the floor on the far side of his bed under the window and had pulled a blanket off the bed, and when we came back into his room he was just happily mumbling a conversation with someone inside his head. The hard part then started, rearranging the furniture so we could get a Hoyer lift sling under him because no four of us combined could safely lift him. He had pulled out his IV, people just do not understand what hard physical labor nursing and to a lesser degree doctoring can be.

I work with a lot of nurses who make fun of patients, complain about patients and are so derisive, it shocks me. I always remember that the patient is most likely much more horrified than anything we might feel. The embarrassment and humiliation would be overwhelming. I work with the most horrific and strong-smelling infected wounds, and although the odor can't be denied, I would never
speak derisively about it. If the patient perceives any negative reaction, the horror is internalized, and may be with them to the day they die. Don't do it!
That’s one of my worst fears. I have been hospitalized a lot due to multiple health issues, and I’m terrified that the nurses are making fun of me during the worst times of my life. I try to never complain about anything, and I try to be the easiest patient possible. Thank you for having a good heart and showing empathy toward your patients.

Yeah the guilt ate me up and almost made me kill myself because of it, and I am not even a nurse or a doctor or someone in the medical field! I saw someone barfing (caucasian lady probably in her 40s give or take, brown hair). I was so scared that I did an about face and just sat on the benches outside the E.R. I had to take my homeless drug addict ex fiance to the E.R. because he thought he had testicular cancer when it just turned out to be a cyst. He INSISTED I take him there and as a result, that is what I saw. I was wearing my beautiful sundress and carrying our dinner left overs that we just bought from the restaurant a few blocks over. Plus, I was not fully vaccinated when I took him there. Been carrying the unbearable guilt since. I wish I never took him there. He could have just gone to the doctor for it! I also read in an old 90's encyclopedia that people can vomit when they are actively dying. So yeah. I hope she is okay now. I prayed for the lady but I don't even know if God exists! I just wish that that day 8/18/22 never happend! But I can't turn back the time or change anything about the past.
This past winter my husband had strep pneumonia which quickly went septic. Among other frightening issues he developed a virulent chest infection. The doctor who did a VAT procedure to remove it is our hero. She said it was one of the grossest infections she'd ever seen, when she laughingly told us about it later. She was so thorough and so determined to do all she could to help him survive. That doctor and all the medical staff in the ICU and the surgery ward saved his life several times over three weeks. Thank God for all the wonderful medical miracle-workers who help us when we need it most. You are angels!
As an RN of 34 years I can't even tell the number of times I performed some function with a smile on my face & my own vomit in the back of my throat. Sometimes it can't be helped but the trick is to never let your patient know, as I'm sure this doctor hid his discomfort also. Maggots in flesh are my trigger. One time, after removing a home applied dressing I told a patient I had to go get something & said I'd be right back. I went & threw up, then came back as if nothing happened. Every nurse I know has a trigger of some sort. We're human too.

I have seen this too. My little guy had them coming out of his colostomy with another hole on the other side of his abdomen. The smell was the worst thing I had ever smelled to this day. But I never left his room for the three hours left of my shift. I tried to bathe him, but his skin was so fragile I was afraid of it sloughing off. So I bathed his face and other parts that were ok. It was awful. He must have been in shock, I kept him talking most of the time. And didn't leave until the next shift came in to take over. I will never forget his face or his name. Poor guy passed a week later.
When I worked in an ER a person came in with a wool sock imbedded into their foot and full of maggots....it was an interesting experience to say the least! 😩
We've all been there and yes there are a lot of behind the scenes nurses do to make sure the patient is okay.
Ism pretty sure smell and maggots would have got too me too. I used to be CNA and dealt with alot of gross stuff
This video is hilarious. As a veteran nurse, I can honestly say none of these “gross” substances/scenarios bother me at all! I’m glad you chose medical school over nursing. On the flip side, nothing terrifies me more than the thought of accidentally transecting someone’s artery during an IR procedure. So, I’ll gladly mop up after a patient and forego performance of dangerous invasive procedures. Nothing but respect for IR doctors and the life-saving magic they perform. We all have different callings I guess.

I have oozing green cyst worms around my anus that pop and smell like burnt skunk when I sit down the wrong way. You might imagine how it could turn a 1st date into a last. I struggle with halitosis too--- so foul even the dog, who's nose is usually speckled with cat litter from eating the cat's feces, wont come to me even when i try to feed him! I suppose that wouldnt be so bad, if i could just find an insecticide strong enough to kill the Zambian rat lice I picked up from sleeping in dirty jungle tents. They apparently live off the greenish-black fungus that just spread to both ears. It gets really annoying in July when it ripens and smells like burnt blue cheese-ewww! it can be deafening too when you get a whole bunch of em' chew'n at the same time! The famine relief nurse said i musta picked it up off the the cotton swabs i use to itch my ears i found next to the 3rd-world toilet hovering hole. i sleep there during the monsoon... its the only place high enough the raw-sewage run off won't seep all the way thru my sleeping mat. I brush my teeth every month but still can't seem to get a date... what could i possibly be doing wrong??

I’m a CNA I think vomit not even the vomit itself but the process, hearing the persons body make all the noises and when they struggle to vomit it just makes me so uneasy.
I just got to #1 I commented prior we both have the same thing that makes us uneasy

Witnessing someone vomiting makes me uncomfortable but it isn't my ultra gross thing I don't think... IDK. I haven't really found that "one" thing yet.
I am a retired nurse and have just about seen everything. The hardest thing I’ve had to do was while visiting a patient in their home during my home health care days who had deep and very large wounds on inner thighs (patient weighed over 700 lbs.) and had abscesses removed requiring wound vac dressing changes twice weekly. The odor when the packing was removed was almost unbearable ( no air conditioning in the home either). I actually had to stop sometimes and go outside to breath. I was a wound care nurse and as I said had just about seen it all, but that one got to me. Another time I visited a patient who had a colostomy, had no more colostomy bags and used a bread bag instead. Innovative of him, but was so gross. Prior to the 30 years as a visiting wound care nurse I worked in the hospital assisting with many births, and I swear was never grossed out, very stressed at times, but never grossed out. Overall I loved my profession, worked until I was 74 and miss it so very much.
Thank You for your care!..... My biggest fear as I age ( Currently 67 yrs old , healthy and active...) is being put into someones care that will be mean to me. I pray for an Angel to look over me.
@@Deej496 There are far more angels around us and in the medical profession than we know. I saw and worked with so many of them for 50 years. I understand your fear, I’m 79 now, and I know prayer helps. I will pray for you to receive care from his angels when you need it. I have faith in our human race, and believe in the goodness of people, no matter what we see on tv or read about these days. 💕

I can’t imagine working til I’m 74, but I know I probably will have to, if I’m able. So far, I’ve been an RN x 30 yrs., & was an EMT, then Paramedic/firefighter before & during that time, also! So lovely to know that while in the most vulnerable of conditions, on top of shame and embarrassment, you can feel mortified that it’s confirmed you are grossing out your doctor/nurse/etc. Where’s the professionalism and empathy to not put this on YT?
I just retired after 30+ years as an RN and the grossest thing I had to deal with was while I was admitting a homeless gentleman that had had a cabg (heart bypass surgery) 3 weeks prior. He was being admitted due to a post-op wound infection in his leg where the vein was harvested. Being homeless he sorley lacked hygiene and his clothes were so dirty they were actually "crispy" and stiff from all sorts of dried bodily fluids and substances including but not limited to vomit, urine, feces and other excretions. Oh my goodness the smell was other worldly! Anyway, once the nursing assistant and myself finished cleaning him up he started complaining that he felt like something was crawling inside his infected leg and proceeded to scratch at his incision before we could stop him and just as I got to his bedside his leg wound opened up and hundreds of maggots were crawling all over and in the incision and all over the bed.....oh my gosh it was THE most disgusting thing. Between the smells that were hanging low in the room, his dirty clothes in a plastic bag and the sight of hundreds of maggots in his wound, this was the only time my 30 + years that I had to leave a patient's room to collect myself. To this day anytime I recall this event I can still smell all the smells and the sick feeling in my stomach.
I literally held my breath while reading this! 🫣 parasites of any kind freak me out, but especially maggots. 🫣😵💫

Believe it or not, maggots are good! They eat the "proud" (rotten) flesh, & leave the good flesh alone. But an overload of maggots is most definately gross!!!
I can relate to the phobia of vomitting! Many years ago when I had my first child I knew that dealing with vomit and poop explosions would be an issue. I bought a 3M full face respirator with P100 main cartridges and organic vapor pre-filters (ie - activated charcoal). Whenever a kid would vomit I'd throw the mask on, don thick gloves, and head in with two garbage bags, a roll of paper towel, and a bottle of medi-wipes. One bag was for trash, the other was for laundry. With that mask you smell NOTHING, not the slightest hint of anything. Everyone thinks I'm a drama queen for doing that, but I would have barfed more than my kids if I didn't have that. With that PPE I was the one man MFing hazmat team. I'd wade into an ocean of puke, clean everything up, get the laundry going, degown outside and throw the trash away, and never smell anything. 5/5, would recommend again!
I laughed out loud when I read this and so wish I had your hazmat suit when my children were small. My solution was to call my husband at the office and tell him there was a package for him at home!

For any type of job we all have things that can disturb or grosses us out. I worked at a major airport as a contract worker on a team responsible for cleaning up aircrafts for the turnaround flight. Many times this would involve cleaning the lavatories. Most were dirty from routine use , but from time to time you would see a bloody pad or tampon which did not bother me( i'm a male). One day as a flight attendant did her final exit check she told me that someone vomited in the lavatory sink and it would not drain. I'm thinking no big deal, I open the door , looked at the vomit in the sink and then I vomited too. Instant reflex at seeing it. So I can understand why this would be # 1 on his list.
As a severe emetiphobe that wants to go into healthcare it's really inspiring that you've been able to somewhat adapt to your job. Thank you for sharing your stories. It really is the only thing holding me back, I hope I can adapt too.

This is where my true appreciation comes in for healthcare workers. You all do deal with so much. I have a hard time with all of it. I visit my dad in the dementia ward in a nursing home and he was projectile vomiting one day. I almost joined him because my stomach was turning. I felt like the biggest piece of crap calling the nurse to help clean it up. I couldn’t do it. I even had a hard time when my son would vomit as a baby.
I just want to say THANK YOU to all the doctors and nurses out there. You’re human, you get grossed out by the same things we all get grossed out by, but you persevere and you treat the patients anyway! True heroes!
I'm actually not that grossed out by blood or vomit, but the "floodgates of stool" is basically my definition of hell 🤮🤮🤮thank you for your service to humanity!!! 🙏🙏🙏
That sounds frightening lol...I pray I never get an impacted bowel because I have IBS and deal with constipation fairly often, usually OTC laxatives are enough.

I love health care professionals for the work they do. I received a lung transplant 14 years ago and was in an induced coma for several months. I know that there were times when my condition had to be gross. I am sorry for that but am very thankful for all the help I received. I am alive today mostly because of the nurses caring for me at that time. God bless all of you.
Love your sense of humor. Watching eye surgery can gross me out, but a lot of this is “welcome to motherhood!”

Urine normally doesn’t bother me but one time I was checking on a patient and she stepped on her almost completely full urine bag while I was standing right next to her and her urine just got everywhere - on my shoes, my socks, my trousers... it was disgusting. And I couldn’t even react disgusted because I felt sorry for her and the nurses were like “oh can you just attach a new Urine bag really quickly, we’re so busy” before they let me change 🥲 because you know, it’s always fun to torture the med students 😂😂

The worst thing I ever dealt with during a 40 year career in hospital nursing was a pt who vomited up pus. It was truly gross. The pt was very ill-he had already had abdominal surgery and was not progressing. I saved a specimen of the pus & rang the surgeon who came to see the pt. His first question was "Are you sure it was pus"? I replied "I knew you wldnt believe me so Ive saved a sample for you". The surgeon took him straight to operating theatre. It must have worked because the pt recovered!

Yeah-it's somewhat annoying. Often male doctors seem to doubt what a female nurse tells them. I think it's partly the male mind-it needs facts & data. So I used to make sure I had as much data as possible when reporting an issue to a surgeon/doctor. It's fair enough in some ways because doctors are the ones who make the big decisions re treatment. I was an After Hours Manager once at a private surgical hospital. The surgeons & consultants there really respected my opinion because they knew me & trusted me. That was a wonderful feeling. By then I had had a lot of experience. That was my best job ever.
I think everyone who's in the medical field, should bring an extra set of clothes with them to work..

That time I walked into a SNF men's ward with 4 beds, all of which were assigned to me that morning, and found one of the men had been digging in his rectum and thrown stool all over the room, all 4 men needed baths, it was in the theater curtains, on the walls and windows, in the sheets and blankets of all 4 beds, I marched right to the RN and asked her to come see this because it had to have happened well prior to the shift change, much of the stool was dried out. The man had likely not been to the toilet in several days and had become impacted. I had 12 other patients in addition to these 4 and it was just going to take all day just to get these guys and their room in order, that was the day I decided I was done with nursing. It took a while yet to get back into college for a finance degree, but in my mind healthcare, especially long term care, was finished. That was the day I mentally said I QUIT! By the way, housekeeping will not clean up stool smeared and thrown all over a room. Anymore than laundry will not touch sheets that have not had bowel movements rinsed out of sheets before they are sent to laundry. I had to clean these men, including getting the shit out from under their nails, clean the room, dress and feed them, and take care of a dozen other of the least capable residents.
As a nurse I am grossed out by vomit, so I always make sure my patients that are nauseated get their meds to prevent them from vomiting. I have vomited along with patients in the past.
I'm applying for a CNA training program and find out next week if I got it to fill the gap before nursing school application..I hate puke..I have an ostomy myself so I don't mind poop, but vomit is my kryptonite.
Vomit & sputum... I don't know which is worse. So gross!
Leave medicine and become a librarian NOW before you do any harm to a sick person.
@@meredithmericle7487 who? How are you going to harm a patient because you don't like vomit? Nobody should "like" vomit. And the nurse above is right. The meds stop the vomiting which will lessen the effects of dehydration and an inability to keep nutrient levels up. Strange comment.
@@secondchancesurvival I disagree. If you can't tolerate bodily functions, you should not be in the bodily fluids profession. If he were your doctor, gagged, and ran out of the room when you got sick, how would you feel? I was in the emergency room once with and threw up on the ER doctor's shoe. He made the most horrible face at me and turned away. I told him, "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the G.D. oven." My-words and sentiment exactly..
As a patient I honestly hate giving urine samples and there's a reason for it. One time I went to my local doctors office for a uti test. I did the usual, pee in the cup and go back to your room. Well this doctors office wasn't very big. Like my room was right across from where they test urine, blood, etc. Well as I was sitting there for my results I overheard the nurse say: "why is it so warm? It smells disgusting, I think I'm gonna vomit". And as someone with social anxiety to begin with, hearing that made me feel super embarrassed. I understand if something is gross but c'mon, you could at least say it quietly since your literally 10 feet away from the patients room. Now everytime I give a urine sample I feel extremely bad. The nurse even messed up the uti test too so I had to give her another sample.

I’m with you though. My anxiety is so bad that I probably would have left and just never contacted them again.
But I get super embarrassed easily so carrying my urine in a cup is already awkward.
That is so disrespectful for a professional.
Something to consider concerning increasing salaries. It can provide some satisfaction for a while until you notice your federal and state taxes have also increased.
I am a retired police officer and EMT in Ohio. Just wanted to say I absolutely loved the video! The thing that I had a hard time with was eye injuries. I have really sensitive eyes myself so looking at diseased or especially trauma to the eyes was one of those things ended in me owing my partner lunch. lol
I totally agree with you. Eyeballs are my achilles heel. Worked one night and a woman came in who had been stabbed in the eye with a fork. The fork was still in the eye. I very quickly disappeared. I also spent a day with someone who made and fitted false eyes. Couldn't deal with it.
I have oozing green cyst worms around my anus that pop and smell like burnt skunk when I sit down the wrong way. You might imagine how this might turn a 1st date into a last. I struggle with halitosis too--- so foul even the dog, who's nose is usually speckled with cat litter from eating the cat's feces, wont come to me even when i try to feed him! I suppose that wouldnt be so bad, if i could just find an insecticide strong enough to kill the Zambian rat lice I picked up from sleeping in dirty jungle tents. They apparently live off the greenish-black fungus that just spread to both ears. It gets really annoying in July when it ripens and smells like burnt blue cheese-ewww! it can be deafening too when you get a whole bunch of em' chew'n at the same time! The famine relief nurse said i musta picked it up off the the cotton swabs i use to itch my ears i found next to the 3rd-world toilet hovering hole. i sleep there during the monsoon... its the only place high enough the raw-sewage run off won't seep all the way thru my sleeping mat. I brush my teeth every month but still can't seem to get a date... what could i possibly be doing wrong??

As someone who has a good friend who needed interventional radiology several times in the last year, and who will for years to come, I can't thank you enough for what you do.

I was in Healthcare for 26 years. Blood and guts don't bother me but vomit will get me everytime. It makes me start gagging.
As an RT, seeing a child cough up a worm was the one thing that really got me. And the radical necks, throat neck & tongue cancers are the worst. I hate being in the room when they work on dislocated shoulders
From a patient prospective, what really bothers me is a smell in dentists cabinets. The smell of medicine and drilled teeth. Even now, when I am writing it, I feel some anxiety.

I don't work in healthcare, but the #1 thing that I can't stand is someone throwing up.. If a person threw up in front of me, I would have a heart attack and die!
Something I learned on my med surg nursing school rotation is that you can put a disposable absorbent pad/chux in the bottom of the basin/bedpan and it helps to prevent spillage and sloshing. I thought that was a great tip and I will definitely use it when I become a nurse! Thanks for another great video!

I'm not in healthcare but I assumed hospitals used encapsulator powders to clean up vomit, urine, feces, blood etc. It's powder made from polyacrylate polymer matrix and sold under various brand names. What it does is turn liquids to solids, or if it's a solid feces, as long as you add water it encapsulates it and you throw it in the trash. It's also used for camping if you bring a portable toilet. You place a plastic bag with the powder in it from the seat, pee/poo into it, then almost instantly it solidifies. There are also barf bags that contains the powder so that it solidifies. If someone barfs on the floor you can sprinkle the powder on top of it.

When I was on oxy for my severe knee injury, nobody told me about the severe constipation. After a week of being stuck, I laid on my side on my home bed screaming in pain. It was WORSE than delivering my 2 babies. I finally passed the mess, and thanked God my daughter wasn't home to hear my screams. I never felt that much pain. I felt so much better, I really didn't mind cleaning up my own mess.
Speaking of instant relief. I had a c-section and my incision became abscess. I didn't know it wasn't supposed to hurt so much(first baby). My aunt, an RN, was visiting and I mentioned my pain. She took a look and rushed me to the Dr. When he opened up that abscess and drained it I swear i could've done cartwheels. I felt instantly great. Glad I didn't get sepsis. She said it was pretty bad.
I'm so glad to see a physician being transparent about this topic! Thank you for this because vomit really gets to me and I've been wondering if I can even make it into medical school 😩! I have the exact same phobia as you, Dr. Cellini and when I was shadowing in the OR & PACU, I saw this happen one day with this poor patient who couldn't stop vomiting and I was like man, how can I become a doctor (this was before covid btw)
I pray that you find another profession. Dr. Cellni is supposed "to do no harm," so they say. I say that the dear doctor should get off of UA-cam, and take care of his patients instead of encouraging others, whose ethics are questionable, to entertain his followers with their patients" misfortunes. During my 23 yrs as a nurse, the specific circumstance that has grossed me out the most is when I had a patient with a bowel obstruction vomit fecal matter, and of course I have had 2 separate patients do this!!
I didn't know that was possible. And wouldn't the patient get e-coli after vomiting feces?

@@rkatrails if you get a full bowel obstruction, the feces above it builds up. If left long enough it can build up to the stomach and then you vomit it up. Waste has to get out somehow. An e.coli infection is not a super common issue but we normally give antibiotics to prevent this. The bigger risk would be some of the feceal vomit getting into the lungs and causing an infection there.
I'm preggo & I feel like I need to vomit all the time. I feel like all my senses are that much more sensitive but if I over think anything... Ironically, I just clear my head & keep it there. Their feelings won't get hurt if I keep on my masks... But yeah, in my head, I don't think I play things off all that well. I'll be grossed out by my gloves even... thinking they need to be clean too & I don't even want to breath in the air... pretty much, somexs I just dont think straight & get thrown off, heh. I somexs get easily distracted & use more gloves than I should, lol. But by the time I'm by a trashcan, I'll be thinking y did I do that for. Ok, I did this a whole once. I honestly don't even think he noticed :/. I dont feel the need to make fun of anyone tho. I just remind myself, damn. They're in really bad condition. Then try to distract myself w/ something else. There's honestly worse I could be doing.
I was one of those patients and believe me it is a horrible thing to go through. I never heard of it before it happened to me, they scanned me and asked me if I ever had a bowel obstruction because I have a large one now, rushed into surgery. And, yes, you vomit poop.
I was a veterinary technician for 12 years. 6 years on the ER shift. Smells were always the grossest things. Parvo diarrhea, necrotic flesh, necrosis, maggots,....also I spent about 4 hours in an exam room with two mean huskies who had eaten a skunk....ewwww. My sister was also a vet tech. Our parents banned us from talking shop at family dinners because we'd always try to gross each other out.
I’m a Vet Tech also. The smell of Parvo will never leave my mind! It’s the smell of death. It’s horrible!
I was a vet tech for 7 years before my multiple sclerosis became really bad and I was forced to go on disability. I do agree the Parvo smells were bad, but I never really got grossed out by them. I think because I had several methotrexate treatments for MS relapses where I felt like I smelled just like Parvo afterward is why it never bothered me so much.
Parvo and pyometra's are rancid.

Having been a nurse over 45 years, the thing that grosses me out are whiny doctors. That and the smell of digested bloody stools.
This was so validating! I also have a vomit phobia and work in heath care, in addictions specifically, there is a fair amount of vomit, especially with detoxing patients....I struggling with this everyday. Thank you for normalizing these phobias/anxiety and exploring what it is like to confront it on a daily basis through our jobs!
That is why I never wanted children. I have emetophobia something fierce and kids, especially when young, are little puke machines. Yuck.
@@dale116dot7 I had 4 kids. babies bringing up milk after a feed is not a problem. I don't think my kids ever got sick bar once when my toddler had antibiotics and threw up. So did I and my husband had to deal with it.Only happened once.Also have grandkids. No one threw up.

One of my phobias is throwing up and seeing other people throw up, I'd therefore avoid putting myself in those situations at all costs. But hey, that's just me, lol!

I was a certified nursing assistant for 35 plus years. I never once gave an indication if I was uncomfortable dealing with body fluids. I chose my job. The patients did force me.
Now I am a patient. I'm made often to feel uncomfortable by the way my care givers and providers present themselves in my various situations. Sometimes I said it just may be my thoughts only. Hearing this just proves it.

This was a great video! A necrotic foot is very specific but makes complete sense! It’s nice to hear that every doctor has some things that gross them out because I was worried about becoming a doctor because those fake trypophobia pictures sometimes make my skin crawl! I am a PACU nurse and I totally agree with your #2 gross out. I cannot handle tracheostomy secretions or any sputum. Right up there are false teeth. I gag at even the thought of them. I still have PTSD from the time I accidentally stuck my hand in a patient’s dirty denture cup!!
Med tech here, sputum specimens in the lab are things that trigger my gag reflex
I worked as a CCU tech early in my career...worst thing for me was suctioning post surgical patients and having to dispose of the collection bottle liners every shift. I still remember that like yesterday, even though it's been 32 years.

@@Goodwillwinoverevil1984 actually I had my Son at home because I was so nervous to go to a hospital. That was 45 yrs ago. I was sick for a week as a kid in alot of pain. My mom thought I had the flu. I didn't tell my parents how much pain I was in because I knew they would take me to the hospital. My mom finally got really worried and my fever spiked so off to the hospital I went. My appendix had ruptured.
I literally have never met anyone that has the issue with vomit like I do. People that just feel sick, I make sure to stay away from.
A friend of mine can clean just about anything, feces, vomit , but don’t ask her to clean dentures.

I worked in the ER as an aide. The ambulance came in with a person from a car accident and waiting for the dr to pronounce him dead. As they were putting him in one of the rooms the person’s head was moving around. The tech reached under the sheet and grab the head and handed it to me. Need less to say I almost hit the floor.

I had Emetophobia from when I was a young child until my mid 20s when I started experiencing migraines. The vomiting with the migraines totally removed the mystery around vomit for me and there’s no way I could have worked as a hospital ward based pharmacy professional as I have done since 1998 if that hadn’t happened. I’m the only person on earth thankful for the migraine experience because it cured my puke phobia! Weird huh?!

Gave me a harmful scare when I took my homeless drug addicted, ex fiance to the E.R. just for a small cyst! Saw someone doing the v when we were there, that I just HAD to stay outside in the benches! I had to protect myself, my sunday dress, my dinner that we just bought at a restaurant next door. ... It was weird :-(

I'm a retired interpreter and medical interpreting was my 'thing.' There were three things that bothered me most. I always hated to hear the doctor say they were calling respiratory because that meant phlegm. The sound of someone coughing and choking on phlegm and being suctioned....omg gagged me. Second was hearing someone vomit...so gross, but my fear was that I was going to catch whatever they had. The third thing that grossed me out was going to the podiatrist's office where someone with nasty feet was having their toenails clipped. Those things would ping off of everything in the room. I hated dodging nasty, flying toenails.

I really enjoy wounds & suctioning! It feels so good to debride or clear that airway & help someone breathe more easily. Stool does not bother me at all, unless you find it smeared all over your patient, their bed, and everything within their reach. Grossest thing in my first year as an RN.
My poo chant is ' it's only mud, it's only mud' that and a dab of vicks and I'm good to go

So thankful for nurses and aides who care for people in all conditions while making an effort not to embarrass or humiliate a patient when “things” happen.
I'm not in healthcare but did have to be a primary caregiver for my mom in her last years. The worst for me was the commode. Stale urine and feces; the smell would get to my normally strong stomach. I have a heap load of respect for those in healthcare, especially the CNAs and nurses who deal with this daily.
Yep. I was my mom's caregiver for the last year and a half of her life. It gives you a healthy respect for healthcare workers. I won't go into the details, but the word "gross" doesn't do it justice.
I totally agree about a Necrotic foot being so awful as I work in a funeral home and see so much of this.. Makes me all the more attentive to my own feet and that they are properly taken care of. Many people in general (diabetic or not) do not take care of their feet and it can be gross. Plus they seem to wear flip flops alot and exposing those nasty piggies and hooves.. I'm a nurse working in critical care and the one thing that really grosses me out is sputum! I just about gag when providing trach care. I once had a patient who had a trach and coughed with such force that sputum went everywhere including on me. I kept dry heaving. So embarrassing...
That's my worst nightmare with trach patients. Cleaning them is bad but when I'm not expecting it I would die lol
RT here....I always enjoy the age old knowledge in the hospital....RTs can deal with Sputum...RNs can deal with poop...its been a mainstay red line between those 2 specialty professions.
I was taught to suction my SCI patients when needed (PT here), and it was their faces with the silent cough that got me. My eyes watered every time.
Always hated suctioning.. ugh!

I'm so happy to hear that someone else has emetophobia. I've nearly walked into the path of a city bus to get away from someone doing it. I've even gone to out patient rehab to work on the phobia. Nothing works. It has ruined my life and kept me from doing so many things. If that guy had vomited on me on purpose, I'm not sure if I could have kept myself from harming him.

Listening to this video and then reading the comments was a hoot. As a nurse in the nursing home for 27 years...ahh the memories 😵💫. I've dealt with just about everything (cancer, necrosis, feces, vomit, blood). As a matter of fact my grandson always comes to me to clean up the dogs puke. When I ask when are you going to learn to do this he just smiles, cringing. I went into grumbling about "after being the oldest kid, having my own kids, nursing and helping raise my grandchildren then their dogs I'm only good for cleaning up puke and poop!". Of course I was just ragging him 🤣. But to me it's phlegm. We used to have this one pt. with a trach and he was always spiting globs clear across the room. We had to clean the walls because housekeeping wouldn't. We got good at weaving and dodging when working with him (he wasn't doing it on purpose and was born with many issues). But one day I "thought" I was good until I went to pick him up to transfer him to a chair and stuck my hand right it a mess I missed under his neck and groaned "yuck 🤢" needless to say he laughed! Good thing he a one of my favorites for I could have strangled him. TBH I think this cringe originated from a kid I knew who wouldn't stop eating his boogers 🤣😂

I worked as a Certified Medical Assistant in a Family Practice clinic. We had an elderly female patient who had been unable to remove her pessary for several days. The main things that gross me out were odors, eyeballs and toenail removal. The Dr. removed it and there was a huge gush of the most vile smelling green liquid I've ever seen. It was all I could do to stay in the small, airless exam room. Then I had to clean it up, I have lots of stories but that's the one that almost brought me to my knees.
I with you, i can’t stand vomit and can’t stand my own vomit. If I vomit I close my eyes and flush as it is coming out.

I’m an RT I can deal with secretions and all of the bodily fluids, no problem. YEAST is what gets me. Get those emergent patients coming in the ER that’s a stat intubation or a code. Start undressing the patient and have all the smelly, jelly yeast in all the folds and ceases of the body. OMG 🤢

I'm a speech therapist in a nursing home, and what grosses me out the most is vomit. Unfortunately I have to deal with it every now and then, working with people with dysfunctional swallows. I actually have emetophobia, so it grosses me out and gives me major anxiety about getting sick myself!
Although, the grossest thing I've experienced in a nursing home was a patient defecating all over the floor and smearing it on the walls, and several CNA's and nurses coming in the room and sliding on it. 🤢
Not that the comments secions is a statistical sample of any kind, but it seems like emetophobia might be extremely common. (It would make sense from an evolutionary biological vantage, as would various other medical phobias)

Been a health care worker for over 12 years… still can’t to vomit. The action/sounds of someone heaving and the sour odor… I have to hum and turn my head when holding a bucket for my patient. One patient asked if I needed the bucket next, we laughed about it later😅

I am a Crohn's patient and I am sooo thankful for people like you who can do procedures that are gross. Only once I had a bowel impaction and it was the worst thing ever to happen to me other than rectal abscesses. Thanks to all medical professionals who care for people. I was going to say, I have had jugs of infected bile sucked out with nasal-gastric tubes, vomited with them in, every time they say I shouldn't be able to. And I just can't vomit in public. Unless, I'm really ready for emergency surgery. Which is how I learned I had Crohns. But I felt bad for all my doctors. I took care of myself...I begged the ER for tests but sometimes, you get overlooked as someone with an ED. But that was a long time ago, and it's very different now.
I’m a Vet Tech, but I think think this applies to people too. Anything to do with bones sticking out of the skin. Also the sound when a bone is dislocated and put back into place. It doesn’t make me sick per say, but I start sweating and cringe every time.
I had a broken finger once, and after looking at the xray, the Dr said "let me look at the finger". He was just gently looking at it, then wham! He realigned the bones, snapping it back in place. I turned white. He gave me smelling salts as I was fading fast. He said if he had told me what he wanted to do, I never would have let him. Thanks, doc!

I was a care aide/ LPN for over 15 years, I was oddly immune to most gross things in medicine as I don’t have the sense of smell, so unfortunately I was always nominated for the worst scenarios because everyone else was 3 shades of green lol however my biggest annoyance in medicine is when people refer to incontinente products as “diapers”, or clothing protectors as bibs.. seriously those 2 words should never be in the same sentence when referring to anyone over the age of 2!! Talk about loss of respect

After 33 years as an RN with 10 of those years in the Operating Room, the only thing that ever got to me was necrotizing fasciitis.
I used to work in high dependency dementia units and it was common for patients to remove their pads and fiddle with their faeces. I’ve found it plastered on walls, in their hair, everywhere. And trying to shower then without them grabbing at you with all this dirt on their hands is tricky!
Emetophobia here as well and I had a bruised duodenum last year after a surgery. It was puketown for a day or so before they stuck an NG tube in. I still have flashbacks, especially of when the NG tube went in because my mouth was like a fountain getting every last drop out. Never have I ever been so grossed out by my own self. Bless those nurses!

Vomit takes the 1st place. I worked as an oncology nurse for 30 yrs and saw it all. Vomit is the most gross.
🙋♀️I'm in wound care and almost universally we all have issues with mucus. I can debride, drain, pick off maggots, clean up necrotic foot but cannot be in the room when a patient is suctioned.
I was an EMT, also studied as a PA, I dealt with a lot, the main thing that bothered me was coffee ground vomit. I also had to do CPR without a mask and had people vomit in my mouth. I can still smell and taste it after 35 years.

Okay, chiming in here because while I'm sorry you deal with emetophobia, seeing that you can still be in the medical field is amazing!! I completely avoided it even though I've always been interested in medicine because I just can't with vomit. I get panicky and have anxiety attacks when I get too nauseous.

I’ve seen and analyzed blood, body fluids and tissue specimens but the only thing that made me gag was when the ER sent me a specimen coughed up by a homeless person to ID

20+ years as a surgical nurse, Ive smelled many rotten feet. Itsbad. I think the worse for me is a lower GI bleed!
I am a medical scribe in the ER and the two things that have grossed me out has been lice, bed bugs on patients! We usually see them in elderly patients :( The other thing that really gets me is maggots on a necrotic foot! Never will forget that smell!
Totally with u on that. That is almost worse then vomit and that is saying alot
I relate 100% to your #1 thing that grosses you out: vomiting.
I had a couple of traumatic violent, projectile vomiting episodes as a kid that left me with a lifelong phobia. I'll do anything to avoid vomiting myself and I can't stand to see, hear or smell others vomiting.
I wanted to become a nurse but knew I'd never be able to handle vomiting so I chose a different career.
I still have the phobia but not as bad as when I was younger. It has helped to understand that the smell, as awful as it is, is simply bile, a natural body fluid and it has a purpose. And the contents of vomit is simply digested food. So it's mostly food and bile. Gross but understanding it that way helps.

Me, too. Vomit is my down fall. I was so sick with kidney disease and was under going an IVP. I told the Dr. Doing the procedure that I was going to throw up. It told me that it would pass. I told him 3 times and then I proved to him it wasn't going to pass like he said. I painted the doctor entire outfit with the white crap they made me drink. I was horrified and so embarrassed.
I was once one of those hospital patients who for a brief period could not control his bowels. Almost all of the people there were so kind, even though it grossed them out. They could tell I was totally ashamed. (I was even ashamed when I regained control and used a bed pan, and they still had to clean me up.) I will never forget, however, that one tech who said with disgust, "How did this happen?!" As if it had been a choice I'd made.
Thank you for making your comment David. You have my sympathy and do not need to be ashamed at all. Some people should look for alternative work! I have an incontinence condition anyways and I had to take a course of antibiotics. Some of them give you diarrea. Anyways I was in hospital and...
One of the health care assistants said "What would you do if you were at home?" as if it had been my fault though maybe she was just asking to make conversation?!
Don't take it to heart too much. As healthcare workers we're there to help. Having a bowel movement is a natural function of being a human being. No need to be ashamed. Just remember most of these techs are getting paid the same as a mcdonalds burger flipper. So a lot of them don't really understand nor care that you can't shame someone for helping them with their natural bodily functions that they can't take care of themselves, that's why they're in the hospital.
@@snow86241 I agree that no one should be embarrassed by the comments but it is easier said than done, especially when you are in a ward full of strangers - patients and staff. I once had a fever and was shivering so had been given an extra blanket but was rebuked by a junior nurse for having more than I was allowed, according to the rules!
I would say the tech didn’t know it wasn’t ur choice. Didn’t know ur condition - that u had lost bowel control
I worked in a Nursing Home and cleaning up bowel movement was just part of the job.
Vomit 🤮 I can take really anything else. I had cared for people almost 30 years, I changed, washed, took care of catheters and colostomy bags, periods and not my own, and much more and I was just a direct care worker.

You are too funny! I was an RN for 25 years, the last 10 as an Oncology RN. We have seen and done it all. I could suction a patient with one hand, and eat a sandwich with the other! Vomiting was nearly a daily event in the clinic. The docs would run every time as the nurses jumped in to help.
