    Anne-Sophie is a world class expert on this subject, and articulates it better than any native English speaking pundit.

    I've heard this Strad in the Philharmonie in Berlin, it fills the air with music in the whole concerthall, a real great instrument and a wonderfull artist!

    So many of those violins have beautifully flamed maple backs. It's a pity that so many artists neglect to show the instrument from many angles so that we can appreciate its beauty all the more.

      Early on, yes. But when Nickola Amati died in 1684, Stradivari was wealthy enough to purchase the best of Amati's wood, because the Amatis had fallen on hard times, and Stradivari saw the value of Amati's beautiful wood, and felt that at the age of 40, and with two sons helping him, he would be able to make beautiful violins for a long time. The 4-piece back on the Lipinski during Stradivari's use of Amati's wood may have been more the work of his sons, including his youngest, rather than by Stradivari himself.

    Your English-usage lesson for today: Never, never, never modify "unique" with "so" or any other adverb. A thing is unique or it is not!

    • @ericlind6581
      @ericlind6581 3 роки тому

      We say “so unique” to specify levels of uniqueness. The shades of “uniqueness” we commonly say are: uncommon < unique < rare < singular. We add modifiers to give sub-level texture between these notions. If there is contextually some notion of uniqueness then one could say “so unique” to imply it’s a degree more uncommon than simply unique but not quite rare or singular. The only one that really doesn’t make sense is “so singular” as singular already means one.

    • @autodidact2499
      @autodidact2499 3 роки тому

      @@ericlind6581 You are "so" full of shit! When a word is an absolute, such as "unique", it can't be modified, dunce! There are no "levels [sic]" of uniqueness; a thing is unique or it's not. Get it, dunce?

      @@autodidact2499 Amazing how you revert to insults so quickly. Truly the end of civility. Yes there is what’s grammatically correct and there’s everyday speech which doesn’t always follow what’s technically grammatically correct. Haven’t you ever heard “it’s quite unique” or “it’s very rare”? Or do live under a rock you imbecile.

    but literally every modern analysis of Strads show that they don't produce sounds better than finely made modern violins, nor do does their sound carry any better than modern violins. NPR recently sponsored an analysis where many professional violinists, violin makers and experts were gathered together and asked to differentiate between the sounds of Strads and modern violins. Well over half of these experts couldn't identify the Strad. Then, there are the physical analysis experiments where acoustic physicists have concluded that there's nothing unique to the Strads that modern violins lack. Strads should be valued for their beauty and the histories that each individual one has.

    • @reddragonready
      @reddragonready 6 років тому +10

      Then that study also proved many COULD differentiate.

      A better test of old and new violins would be to have soloists play one of each during a performance. There must be a reason why the top-ranked soloists will choose a Strad or Del Gesu if they can get it.

      @@reddragonready Probably they were all required to give an opinion, as opposed to admit they couldn't tell. Then I'd assume, based on those results, that nobody could tell, otherwise I'd be more in favour of recognizing the strad.

      @@TheNeilsolaris Your "probable" is not all that probable. To assume all those people voluntarily taking part in the study and half would lie?

      It's important to note that modern violin-making can be traced back to these models. The sound you hear today is only possible thanks to the way these instruments were constructed. Wood is an organic material, so comparing old violins is unfair (projecting can be harder, supposedly). In the end, it's really up to taste, but the master craftmanship of Stradivari is undeniable.

    There are instruments made today that are just as good and even better than Strads, it's been proved in blind tests numerous times. These experts and musicians spout pretentious nonsense to keep up the mystique and to keep prices high because they are investments as much as musical instruments.
