Thank you Pamela. You're very kind. We said it last year however circumstances prevented it, but Justin plans to be back this winter. So keep your eyes peeled, as my dad loves to say.
Pamela, I'm sorry but my previous comment doesn't make sense with what you said. I must've been responding to someone who asked us to come back in winter. I'm happy letting Justin and Alex handle all the technical stuff and all I have to worry about is just being me. HaHa. But thanks for suggesting to do my own channel.
Hi Bruce! Can you tell me which brand of weed barrier you used in your vegetable bed area? If you mentioned it in the video, I haven’t gotten to it yet. Thanks!
@@AgendaInMind I'm sorry but not sure of the brand name. Keith at S&K Greenhouses here locally, ordered it for me four years ago when I built the vegetable garden. I know he got it from one of his suppliers and I want to say it was Mize Garden Supply, a wholesale company. S&K does special order it at times for those who want it. it comes in a roll around 12' wide and around 200' long. maybe more. and 4 years ago it cost around $300. Under our current leadership who knows what it cost now but I can guarantee you it "ain't" cheaper. It is great stuff. It's not plastic. It's a woven product that is tight enough to keep weeds out but porous enough to allow good water drain and oxygen to penetrate the ground. Like I said, I've had it on the ground for four years and it looks as good as it did the day I installed it. I'll check with Justin and them at S&K to see what it is and maybe your local nursery can order it for you too or maybe you can order it directly from the manufacturer.
Bruce's gardens are among the most beautiful private gardens I've ever seen. I just wish I could have tagged along with you guys ...so I could see them in person. I have never seen a double-grafted spruce tree, and the one in his garden ... it's positively awesome! His collection of evergreens is second to none, it's outstanding. Please thank him for sharing his collections and passion for growing things with us. I hope everyone is able to enjoy spending time in their gardens. Blessings. ~Margie🤗🌲💐🦋
I happened to fall asleep in my favorite chair and let the auto run on UA-cam when I heard Bruce's beautiful Southern accent talking about plants. At first I kept my eyes closed so I could enjoy the music of his voice. Then at "Girl you sexy too!" I opened my eyes because I had to see who had THAT sense of humor with that beautiful sound. I was surprised to open my eyes to a little piece of Heaven. Immediately I rewound the video to the beginning. Wow just, WOW! I have enjoyed this video tour immensely. I've feel like I've been to Horticultural Disneyland and History School all in one day. And I smiled and chuckled to myself the entire video. His little names for his favorites made me blush with envy. I want to be called "Big Sexy" and "Pretty Girl" too! LOL Who wouldn't grow and bloom with that kind of flattery! You knocked this one out of the park guys. Thank you for taking us on the tour. And Kudos to the videographer and editor. Well done gentlemen, well done.
You are so sweet 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 and I must say, the way your write is phenomenal! I love reading what you had to say very beautiful words! Thanks for shouting me out ❤
You two together are sheer joy to watch. I feel like an hour just flew by while I listened to two guys casually chat about a passion of theirs. Never stop doing interviews with Bruce. I’m here to take it all in and enjoy. Plus, I always leave with tips I can use to have a more beautiful garden 🌱 🌸 🌱 🌺
Your words are a joy to us miss milessherry. Yes we plan to do video's coming more often and will concentrate future shows on one subject. Hopefully, that will be more educational with lots of tips. and we'll do our best to keep it interesting. When I worked at the nursery Justin and I used to do our own commercials and everyone loved them so we will try to carry that into new video's. Just two country boys having fun.
One of the most beautiful gardens I’ve seen. I live in Scotland and it’s amazing how many of the plants and tips work well here too. I bet this garden is still a beautiful show in winter which is my favourite kind of garden
Yes! He has plenty of conifers that provide winter interest. I can definitely appreciate a landscape that provides year-round color too! 🌲 Thank you for tuning in!
thank you zsianz1. I'm a Duncan and a family member has traced our lineage all the way back to Edinburgh. They left Scotland early 1700's and wound up in the Carolina's mid 1700's. My line is in the Low Country of South Carolina, as its called. The lower half of the state. If you saw the first video of my gardens I mentioned that my goal is to make it look good in the winter. By using different conifers with varied color, texture and size. Around them are different colored shrubs that maintain their foliage Then I mix in winter annuals like pansies, viola's and different types of cabbage and kale. One of my hero's is Alan Bloom of Foggy Bottom in England. I love winter gardening also, so must be something in these Scottish gene's?
@@bruceduncan1792 how wonderful to get a reply from you. That’s very cool that your ancestors come from Scotland! Yes I watched the last video too. I have 7 acres here and my goodness I would love to make part of it even half as beautiful as yours.
THIS is one of the most verdant, lush, full, abundant, imaginatively designed gardens I have ever seen! Bruce is a TRUE master gardener. Salt.of.the.earth. Whenever I see + hear aboit a marvelous plant in a video, I put a heart at the front & end of it's name (of course I take notes!), denoting to me, "THIS is a plant I have got to grow in my garden!" With videos featuring Bruce Duncan's garden, there're hearts splathered all over the pages. Nobody does it better than this gardener + his, what must be absolutely splendid, other half. (Julie??) Some spin-off videos on the Duncan's preserving the bounty would be fantastic!!
A second tour of this lovely space - what a treat! Please return in the fall and the winter so we can see the how the colors hold up. I would also love to see Bruce’s spring planting process. So interesting all around!
@@bruceduncan1792 Bruce, two questions: How do you keep the weeds out of your flower beds? I noticed you use a lot of pine needle mulch, but do you use anything else? Next, do you have any tips on how to raise so many plants and plant varieties on a modest budget? Plants are so expensive these days. Thank you!!! 🌿
@@susanelizabeth5841 susan, it just so happens that Justin, Alex and I just shot a video on this subject. I'm assuming it will take them a couple of weeks to get it edited and uploaded. but let me address a little briefly your questions and what will be in that vid. First, weeds. that is a popular question. some people have a hard time believing this but I have few weeds. and its due mainly to having good soil. weed seeds germinate in poor soil much more prolifically than in good soil. boy, if that's not a good life lesson? I like to compare soil to our attitudes. a poor attitude will attract a lot of life's weeds. I stressed this in both tours Justin has done of my yard. I get good soil by composting left over materials like grass clippings, trimmings from the garden, table scraps, chopped up leaves, etc. there is not enough to say for what composted soil does and one of those is weed prevention. second, I practically, not totally, employ what is called no till gardening. the academic term for this is permaculture. I do not till soil and try not to disturb much. only when removing old plants for new, I dig out the old plant by keeping the spade as close in as possible. weed seeds also germinate more easily when the soil is disturbed. In the upcoming video I explain about my trip years ago to old salem in winston-salem nc where i saw raised bed gardens as practiced by our ancestors years ago. long story short it led me to understand their method was basically no till. when I first started gardening I plowed a field and kept it tilled. always, always having to fight weeds. when I discovered no till methods discouraged weeds and then discovered thru practice that they really do, I will never go back to tractor and tiller method. we will always contend with weeds. just like sin and bad habits. but the key is preventing as much as possible. and when one pops up, don't ignore it, deal with it. every day when I'm in the garden, whether working or enjoying, when I see a weed, I stop immediately and pull it. but the truth is, since employing these raised bed methods, its remarkable how few weeds I contend with. And as far as your other question is concerned, I greatly understand the cost involved, first, start plants from seed. that will save much. don't know where you live and how late or early you can plant, but I start seeds late February to early March here. I keep them in a protected place until I'm reasonably sure no danger of frost will occur. if all you can afford is one small spot, then make that the prettiest one spot you can. don't try to spread things out. figure out what you have to spend toward plants and figure out how many plants you can get. when I used to help people with landscaping and money was very limited, I always suggested buying what you can and work on that one spot of your yard you want to look good the most. I see landscapes so often where plants are spread so far apart that it would look better if they had none. when that spot is like you want, move on to the second most desired spot and so on. If all you can do is one vegetable bed, at least make a go of it. plant a few of your favorite and enjoy. but you can make more of that one spot than most realize. if you have a 4x8 bed for example, build a simple wire fence in the middle and grow climbing plants like cukes, toms, pole beans, etc on it. then use the space underneath for other things. that's a hard question to answer and keep this reply not too long. and not knowing your particular needs, but start from seed and go small if that's what you have to do and then grow from there is my best advice. thank you so much for asking.
I stumbled upon this video yesterday and just wanted to say your space is so lovely. I want to find your video from last year to watch that as well…appreciate your knowledge and skills! Thank you for sharing.
Yay! I've been waiting for this video for what feels like f-o-r-e-v-e-r! My question for Bruce is...would you ever consider starting your own UA-cam channel? We would love to see more of your garden when you have the chance.
Thank you jisson57 !! So glad you enjoy our video's. Justin and I plan to keep these going pretty regular and concentrate on just one subject at a time. I'm happy for Justin and Alex to take care of the technical work and just let me be me. LOL
Oh my gosh! I love Bruce’s gardens.. just amazing and beautiful! Such inspiration and so informative. Loved seeing the fireflies in the shade garden at the very end of the video❤
It’s always a treat to watch Bruce’s garden tour. I loved it last year and I’ve enjoyed to see how much his garden has evolved this year. I love his conifer garden, I get so inspired by all of his choices on everything he has planted. Just beautiful! ❤
I would give anything to know how Bruce Duncan creates, cultivates + feeds his soils. SOMETHING is definitely being done right, 28 days from Sunday!! This couple are truely some of the loveliest contributors to the joy and beauty of all that our beautiful world was created to provide FOR US. ❤
Thank you Holly for the kind words. As far as my soil goes, we have heavy clay but above that is about 5-6 inches of pretty good top soil. So I till up only the top soil. Then above that I add my soil concoction which is composted grass clippings, and any other vegetation I can add to it. And, leaf mold where I chop up fallen leaves in the fall and pile them up and let them compost over a year or so. I take the composted vegetation, add leaf mold to it then spread about 4-6 inches of that on top of the soil that was tilled up. All of that creates a raised bed above the clay so that annuals and perennials don't root into the clay. I don't fertilize bc the compost mixture has enough nutrients as is. Before I replant the next year I will add another 2-3 inch layer of the compost mixture and repeat the process every year.
Hi Bruce, do you add the chicken coop bedding and waste to your compost? When I had chickens I would add it all every time I cleaned out the coop but not sure if I should have. thanks! @@bruceduncan1792
I love this--Bruce is so entertaining, knowledgeable, and passionate about gardening, with life's wisdom and experiences to share. I could listen to him all day. Thank you, this was special.
Bruce is DEFINITELY a plant person. He's a natural teacher and just has a great time sharing his plants with others. I would love to see his gardens in all 4 seasons to see the differences in the landscape.

This garden is absolutely stunning and Bruce's wealth of knowledge is amazing. You guys could probably do a whole video of just garden tips from Bruce! I feel like i've learned so much and i'm so motivated to get back to my garden projects. thank you so much for sharing this with us!
Yay!! Been waiting for another tour of Bruce’s garden!!! I watched the old video you did there several times!! I just love his garden and I love him telling us about it ❤️❤️❤️
Absolutely stunning garden! The blending of the colourful conifers with the equally colourful coleus is truly a sight. I think Bruce referred to it as a Rembrandt and he nailed it. I thoroughly enjoyed this video and look forward to the next. Thank you to all involved in producing it.
Bruce is a treasure! I could read all the gardening books I own and not learn everything I learned from this video. Keep the S&K / Bruce videos coming! I would also love to see spaghetti sauce and salsa videos! THANK YOU for sharing your stunning gardens Bruce!
So excited when I saw the thumbnail. Watched Bruce’s garden tour last year multiple times. I’m here mostly for his amazing conifer garden. Too bad we saw the front conifer garden last in low light. Please do another garden tour in the fall, highlighting the conifer garden and the Japanese maples. Thanks for the great video.
Everything is just beautiful and I love the door to the garden!! As a South Carolina girl that's relocated to the PNW, it was wonderful to hear those southern accents and to see things grown in the south like crowder peas, impatiens and lightning bugs! And I love those Clemson Tigers!
I love everything about this garden. It just gets better every time you show it. And that trail through the woods looks so serene. Can't wait to see it in the spring with flowers blooming. Bluebells would look wonderful back there. Thank you for another inspirational tour!
I’m in zone 5 and you have given me so many ideas for my garden. You can’t swim in our humidity but you can certainly wear it like a wet towel! I love when you two show all the great conifers/ evergreens and how you mix them up with shape and color…. You’re worth a hundred books on garden design. Thank you, thank you!!
Aw, the BEST time spent with yall! Thank you, Mr. Bruce , for inviting us into your garden! It is so lovely! Thanks you, Justin and Alex for taking us there! Always a great time, the fire story🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣!!
we're glad you enjoyed the time watching shelley. appreciate the kind words and yes, that tree catching fire was a hoot. its amazing how hard we fight to give our plants a chance and then something like that happens. you just never know???
If I could give it more than 1 thumbs up, I would! Truly inspirational. And all the Japanese Maples and various evergreens! I don't know how you keep it weed free and you mentioned you have a deer problem, but I didn't see much damage ... I am in zone 6 near Lake Michigan, and I have deer here that will eat what is supposed to be poison stuff, and all it does is make them fatter! And worse, when I go out to chase them, they will look at me until I am maybe 3 feet away, and then they run - but then stop 5 feet away and look at me to see if I'll chase them. Great work and a great video! Thank you for sharing.
I hear ya knox. yes, a fat dog is heavy. hahaha. you should hear us watching a football game. He couldn't play dead in a cowboy movie. My gosh!! Ray Charles could see that coming. Thanks for watching.
YAY!!! Bruce is back! I absolutely adore him. Don’t worry, I’m married. I’m completely envious of his vegetable garden. Yes, become a plant person, it will make you happier than you can imagine. Thank you for the new garden tour & all the tips & laughs.

Hands down one of the best garden tours on UA-cam! I LOVE how you used such a huge variety of plants but it’s still all very cohesive! You’ve created moments throughout your garden that are just absolutely gorgeous on camera so I can only imagine how it is in person! And all that COLOR without tons of annuals - just wow! Well God bless you too, MissyPoo. Your words are so kind and they mean a great deal to me. Thanks for watching and good luck with the landscaping. We should have another video or two up before too long.
I love y'alls southern accent. My husband is from the south, and now I just love hearing southern people talk. Great garden and great information too. Thank you for your work.

Can Bruce start a UA-cam channel just teaching us how to start a vegetable garden, shade garden, or full sun garden and how he decides what and when to plant stuff? that would be wonderful.
This was very informative, I learned a great deal. Thanks to you and Bruce for making it so lively and entertaining. I usually take notes but I could not. Because I had to use my hands to hold my mouth back from laughing out to loud. I have to watch it again, this time I do so at dat time.
Hes got a gorgeous landscape!! He does need his own channel. Look at Garden Answer, shes got her own and does amazing! Hes the Southern version of her!
Miss Janie, I appreciate being called the southern version of the Garden Answer lady. I like her too. Who knows, maybe I'll do one but Justin and I plan to co-op in the future making it a regular thing. That way he and Alex can handle the tech stuff. I was a an engineer in my previous life and its not that I can't do the tech stuff, I Just don't want to!! LOL. God Bless and thanks for watching us country boys.
I love when you share Bruce’s garden. Thank you both! I can’t wait to see your woodland garden! We purchased 6 acres and are hoping to move in our new home this fall. I can’t wait to start my gardens. You are both such an inspiration!
It is one of the nicest landscapes to view. I love to watch you two guys together. You both complement each other so well. Wish I could see more of your videos.
That's a blessing for you to say loulettiero. Justin is like a son to me especially since Julie and I had all girls, four. We plan to start putting out video's more often and look to concentrate on one subject in each video.
We need to have more and more of these videos! Amazing garden and so much knowledge from both of you being shared! Would love a whole vegetable garden series.
Yes!! Going forward Justin and I plan to concentrate our video's on just one subject at a time and vegetables will be some of those. Thanks for watching
Oh my denise. you can't believe how old school I am. My irrigation system is dragging a hose around. But its not as cumbersome as you might think. If we get a good rain most of my stuff can go a week or so without watering. That is why I keep a good layer of mulch and maintain good soil. Those two things will keep watering at a minimum. Thanks for your kindness and watching us.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Bruce is so talented. Would love to know how he handles weed control. I would also love for him to share he and his wife's spaghetti sauce recipe. Thank you for blessing us with this garden tour.
Love your garden. I can tell your garden is a four seasons garden. Need to get Justin and Alex out to film it during the winter, spring and fall times as well.
I would enjoy having a video on how Mr. Duncan starts a new bed. I love the how the edges are maintained. There is a line of grass with the small gap before he placed the rocks around the low growing flowers. Then a video of bed maintenance and weeding. I would love to know about his mulching strategies and fertilization schedule. Don't get me started on the veggie garden!!!! I would love to see him start seeds, plant, fertilize, and maintain the garden beds. So much talent and an eye for garden beauty. I just love it!
I would love to know the deminsions of the compost bin. I am inspired to make one and I have bought a lawn sweep to collect my grass clippings. Are the bins 4x4 using the decking boards?
Love this. I enjoyed the video from last year, and this is a great update with the new additions. Love the new loop trail! Very inspiring! Great job. Yes, do a video of making spaghetti sauce!

Just finished, wow so much to see again!!!! But I was so impressed at how much growth a lot of those trees put on in one year…….flashing back n forth to “big sexy” from last year…..she’s a beast!!!! 🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲❤️❤️❤️
yes, its amazing gardengal but its all in the planting and soil prep as we explained in the first tour of my yard. we plan to do more video's in the future just on one subject and planting methods will definitely be one of them. "big sexy" is a beast ain't she. LOL thanks so much for watching
I have learned a lot from this video. I now know a lot of things I did wrong. You have inspired me. I wish my flower beds stayed as weed free as yours. But growing things closer together should help. I now need to redo my flower beds. Thank you for the inspiration. My brain is going wild with new ideas.
Thanks Darlene!! I get asked often about weed control. Its hard for some people to believe, but I have very few weeds. Its all in the method. First, I employ a "no dig" gardening method. Every season I add about 3-4 inches of new soil or my composted soil on top of the beds. Without digging. Disturbed soil promotes more weeds. I only displace enough soil to put the new plants in. Second, I mulch 2-3 inches around my plants. Most any type of mulch will do but I use pine needles. And Third, as you mentioned, I place my plants close together. A little closer than plant tags call for. As long as your soil is rich and drains well, planting closer will not negatively affect the plants. As you can see in this video. So glad we inspired you.
Absolutely beautiful my man! You have seriously given us such a high bar to reach for. I’ve never seen such a colorful garden without being packed full of blooms. Those color combinations of the foliage are off the charts, off the chain and off the planet! Can’t wait to see next year’s progress
thanks so much mibackpacking. I used to be a trail guide in the boyscouts and boy do I love being on the trail and in the great outdoors. thanks for watching
keith we plan to do a show on that subject in the near future. all i can say is mulch, mulch, mulch. It prevents so many weeds. not all but it will drastically reduce them. I generally keep a good thick layer of mulch, 3-5 inches, around my plants. I use pine needles cuz I get them free. LOL but generally any mulch is good. Just make sure its a good layer. don't be skimpy. And when the plants get thick they will prevent almost 100% of weed germination by blocking the sun.
@@bruceduncan1792 I have found a few tricks with the mulch but we are in a place where I don't think there is weed on earth that isn't growing here. I do use unwaxed cardboard that has helped a lot. Thank you fro the reply.

Amazing gardens!!! Absolutely beautiful!
We should join his channel he’s definitely a master gardener ❤
I just couldn't stop smiling throughout the entire garden tour.
❤

Same here! This was my Saturday night entertainment!
@@amycochran2434 thank you Amy
THIS is one of the most verdant, lush, full, abundant, imaginatively designed gardens I have ever seen!
Bruce is a TRUE master gardener. Salt.of.the.earth.
Whenever I see + hear aboit a marvelous plant in a video, I put a heart at the front & end of it's name (of course I take notes!), denoting to me, "THIS is a plant I have got to grow in my garden!"
With videos featuring Bruce Duncan's garden, there're hearts splathered all over the pages.
Nobody does it better than this gardener + his, what must be absolutely splendid, other half. (Julie??)
Some spin-off videos on the Duncan's preserving the bounty would be fantastic!!
Well thank you holly and for watching too
I was so excited to see another video of this garden. This is one of the most beautiful gardens I've ever seen. Absolutely stunning!
That's awesome to know!! Thank you for tuning in! 🙏
That would be great if they could do a show just on Tips
A second tour of this lovely space - what a treat! Please return in the fall and the winter so we can see the how the colors hold up. I would also love to see Bruce’s spring planting process. So interesting all around!
Thank you Kriss. We hope to have a winter video this year so please stay tuned. And we are going to do a video of my garden bed process as well.
@@bruceduncan1792 Bruce, two questions:
How do you keep the weeds out of your flower beds?
Thank you for sharing.
well thank you miss courtney. so glad you found us@@csrugis
Yay! I've been waiting for this video for what feels like f-o-r-e-v-e-r! My question for Bruce is...would you ever consider starting your own UA-cam channel? We would love to see more of your garden when you have the chance.

It’s always a treat to watch Bruce’s garden tour. I loved it last year and I’ve enjoyed to see how much his garden has evolved this year. I love his conifer garden, I get so inspired by all of his choices on everything he has planted. Just beautiful! ❤
Thank you anasclayhouse. You are very kind. So glad you liked it
I would give anything to know how Bruce Duncan creates, cultivates + feeds his soils.

Beautiful I can watch his garden all day! 💯🔥
Would love to see how he keeps everything watered especially his containers. His gardens are beautiful.

Amazing garden. Loved seeing all the unusual conifers.
Thank you elaine. So glad to have you watching

Gosh Ginny, thank you so much. I love upstate NY. Might think different after a few winters though. LOL
What a great garden tour. I'd never be able to keep up with the weeds if I had that many beds.
keith we plan to do a show on that subject in the near future. all i can say is mulch, mulch, mulch.
Thank you fro the reply.

i hear ya jslabrat. I'm happy letting Justin and Alex do all the tech stuff but do keep your eyes peeled. we plan to do vids very regular going forward and keeping with one subject at a time. probably keep it under 20 mins but packed with info. thanks
Love your videos and please keep Bruce as your go to main video each season! SE Pennsylvania
nancy, you're just too kind but I appreciate it. I love PA. It's a beautiful state.
I bought big sexy last year because of Bruce and i love her. I was so inspired by the first garden tour that i made changes to my own yard by incorporating more evergreen colors. Would like to see his tomato canning process.
Haha! That's awesome. I have two at home and love them!
well good for you mariale. glad you have a "big sexy" we plan to do a spaghetti sauce video and we'll talk about canning tomatoes too
Hanky-panky so much for sharing
Loved last year! Love this year! Bruce has a wonderful garden and he’s so eager to share it. I can hear in his voice how he loves sharing details about the plants. So knowledgeable. Him, Justin, and Alex have a good comradery going as well.

He truly needs his own channel. Beautiful garden
thank you miss bliss but I'm good just being me and letting Justin/Alex do all the hard stuff. thanks for watching
@@bruceduncan1792 Lol! No problem, just love everything about the garden.
If you don't want to do your own channel, let Justin sponsor you with some of his plants at the garden center and he can film you prepping and planting. I already love Justin's channel, so watching you on his channel would be a great bonus!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes, we just so happen to be planning that. thanks
Yes, please show us the tomato sauce recipe!
I almost skipped this video because our growing zones are so different. Boy am I glad I watched. Absolutely wonderful tour, I loved the banter, and very educational! 😊
well thank you romey. what zone are you in? and what part of the country?
@@bruceduncan1792 I am in Pennsylvania growing zone 6b. I never considered that down south you would need to go to such lengths to grown some of the trees and shrubs we grow here.
The property looked so beautiful and natural.
Love how you guys orchestrated that lightning bug show at the end! :)

Looks like a great place to have a Plein air event. Stunning yard. Especially like the old barn
I've had several people paint pictures of our barn. thanks so much for watching and your kind comment.
