Nichiren was great. He repackaged the best of the teachings of Tendai and Shingon Buddhism into something that regular people can actually hope to practice and gain benefit and understanding from. He was a great follower of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is no accident that Nichiren Buddhism has spread worldwide, even if Soka Gakkai International, the organization that has largely done so, is extremely questionable. Nichiren-shu, the traditional and largest Japanese Nichiren order, is wonderful and moderate, not militant or prosyletizing, and has locations in the USA.

I feel like a lot of people born into poverty or just generally unfair circumstances often sabotage themselves out of sheer discomfort with things going well for them.

@@Linfamy What I am saying is that the man had a hard life from the get-go and he was often looked down upon even before he started this branch of Buddhism and poverty/people looking down their noses at you has a way of enforcing negative self image, which after a while becomes a source of comfort.
Basically, a case of "better the devil you know than the one you don't."
This isn't to say that he was a Groveler (he obviously wasn't,) just that maybe he had a romantic notion of the long-suffering hero laying down his life for the greater good...that is until he faced execution and it became too real.

If by Fundamentalist, you mean crazy ranting and no proof, Nichiren Daishonin was not a Fundamentalist.
      Badass? Yes.
Nichiren Buddhism is the only active philosophy that envisions a hopeful future based on the innate capacity of humans to realize the lifestate of Buddhahood just as they are and in this lifetime. As the creator said, Nichiren wrote a lot. Original writings. His reasoning and supporting text is flawless.
The SGI is a lay Buddhist organization that encourages its members to live the practices of Nichiren Buddhism in daily life, the most important of which is the twice a day chanting of NamMyohoRengeKyo for our own and other’s absolute happiness, right now. Sounds crazy, you say? Yep. A miracle? Nope. Ordinary people who refuse to be defeated, operating out of compassion for our own and others suffering who are unafraid, that’s who we are. The chanting of NamMyohoRengeKyo is called the Lion’s Roar! Lions do no retreat. Everything we need we are born possessing. Chanting the lion’s roar infuses the practitioner with courage, clarity and calm.

I'd like to add one thing to Nichiren's story: Nichiren really loved his mother, but in the period it was declared that women can't become buddhas (unless they became fully ordained nuns, which was hard to achieve), so Nichiren tried to prove, ordinary women can attain buddhahood, too. The XII. Chapter of the Lotus Sutra is about an 8-year-old girl who became a buddha after he offered a jewel to Manjusri bodhisattva, and because of this, Nichiren stated this Sutra is the one that has to be followed.

Thanks For this! I just want to add that there are many different branches of Nichiren Buddhism. It's true that there was a branch of Nichiren Buddhism in world war II that propagandized for Japan's military conquests and worshiped the Emperor. However, the SGI (Soka Gakkai International), which was the lay organization of Nichiren Buddhism, did NOT see the Emperor this way. The SGI was very, very anti-war, and did NOT WORSHIP THE EMPORER!....so their leaders were put in jail and starved to death.

I think i might know a littlw bit abt the "ball of light". My grandmother follows and forces nichiren buddhism upon the whole family, and me and my sister would go to meetings for the nichiren buddhism ppl, a very popular story was of the sevond exile you said, but we taught "one day, nichiren daishonin got captured by bandits and was witheld at bandit camps. Just as the bandits were abt to behead nichiren, they (every person there) noticed a meteor coming directly to them. Then nichiren prayed and prayed and prayed and then the meteor's path got diverted, the bandits locked nichiren in a tent for a few days or a few years ( i cant rlly remember) and then he was let go"
Honestly, i really appreciate this video because i now have an excuse to fight against my grandma for forcing us into the religion, because we were taught "he sent a lot of letters of compasion" and blah blah blah

    2) we don’t worship Buddha idols which are disrespectful(we turn images 🙃 in our eyes)
    3) only Nichiren Buddhism gives this precious Gohonzon to every practioners which helps them focus their minds!
Constantly focusing and chanting is what Buddhism is about. Constantly developing our minds is what Buddhism is about.

Part of what separates Nichiren Buddhism from other types of Buddhism, is that Nichiren does not say to try to ignore or get rid of your desires. Instead, you pray for your desires, whatever they are, and gain wisdom from the experience. Yes, desires are illusions, but they are also tools to guide you on a path to enlightenment.
