- Time Team descended upon the sleepy Oxfordshire village of Islip - population about 600 - the birthplace of Edward the Confessor.
The villagers of Islip had been celebrating the millennium of Edward's birth in the first years of the 11th century. They wanted Time Team to discover the location of a medieval chapel dedicated to their famous royal son - and possibly to find evidence of a reputed royal palace belonging to his father, Ethelred.
Raksha adds so much to the digs. I love her personality. such a cutie. Love seeing the earlier episodes

I saw him in a Wessex Archeology presentation from the last year and he’s a much older version of exactly himself ❤.. and if you don’t know, I saw that there’s a life size statue of him in the museum 😂 it’s priceless..

It's nice to see the residents take so much pride in the history of their village. I'm sure it motivates the archaeologists in no small measure.
I am writing from Texas and it amazes me how tight together everyone lived! I mean on top of each other. Lovely show I am binge watching because living with American tv is not an option for me. It tends to turn your brain into gruel.

I'm constantly amazed at the manners and conduct of the characters in these programs . British manners are so impressive . Even when disagreeing they are civil and seldom talk over each other . I'm an Anglophile for sure !

from the looks of it, how Phil is standing and holding his arms and hands, he must be really in pain. his back must have been -killing -him.but he does not let anyone see it. - chapeau -Phil.
Poor Phil had to slow down after he hurt his back. He modified his shovel to make it easier for him to use after the slipped disc. Having to hold back from some of the more strenuous trench work because of the back injury must have been frustrating for him. Still kept on smiling anyway. Gotta love the man.
I can't imagine how many back injuries must spring from these digs . Look at Phil Harding - 40 years or more digging away ! He must be relying on pub refreshments regularly for pain relief ! Oh the agony ! 'Hats off the the old hippie !
He's still going, at Waterloo helping veterans concentrate on anything other than their current circumstance. Don't think he'll dig too much but then again.....
You ignore the pain to get that feeling going again, doing something you love, even if it's not exactly the same.
They needed more volunteers or paid diggers, esp sites where they could not use machines. Their talents should be used to trowel and interpret, not shovelling.

Good show on youtube, Thank you! Mick did teach during week R.I.P Mick. Phil did paper work, dated items also the other diggers I bet day jobs and school, Time Team their relaxed time to dig find . They love history and had fun doing what they love best, bet their time kind of free time? Three days second job maybe? Phil is smart man respect him!!😃
Unfortunately not. Some diggers actually, after the series ended, mentioned that it was three days of back-breaking hard work, from sun-up to sun-down in all weather, sometimes sleeping in freezing tents in wet sleeping bags. Definitely nothing anyone would do just for fun and/ or in their free time. Shame that they didn't get any credit in after-series adulation, but that only 4-5 people are mentioned, as if TT was just a 5 people effort.

I've only been doing this for a few months but Wikipedia, FB and general internet searches have informed me a lot about many of the team members and experts.

@@richardphillips6281 I'm sorry I didn't express myself better. I meant they didn't get any credit by their co-workers in features produced by TT itself, right after the series ended. I think even the first one of these episodes "looking back" only featured/ celebrated Mick, Tony, Phil, John, and maybe Carenza or Helen. No mention of Stewart, Francis, Victor ... or any of the diggers. It's only recently when they restarted the TT channel (and probably couldn't get a hold of Phil and John, and now that Helen and Stewart are professors as well) that they let them get in a word. But they didn't do so at the time, which was very disappointing.
@@milafraser Yes, I think you are right. I hadn't realised that. Perhaps we should make sure the new TT includes all participants equally and no exclusive cliques so all contributions are acknowledged.

Love looking up the sites on Google Earth. Some of the locations you can actually see crops marks from the trenches. Way cool! No sightings of Phil's Hat though.

There's a guy who goes by the name Stannous Flouride (sic on both of those) who has tracked down every site and posted coordinates for them on these UA-cam vids. I suspect he's a little OC, but he makes it work for him.

There's some good stuff on in the UK, but then you have everyone watching eastenders and whatnot for the past 30 years. There's truly bad TV as well. It's not all educational stuff.

I enjoy the comedic aspect of the interaction when acts and speculations are questioned. It is a simple way of getting through differences especially as the day seems to end with a pint of 2--an excellent leveling aspect to life.

I love how Raksha will start a dig a lovely shade of toast, and end it about five gorgeous shades browner. She must use gallons of moisturizer every year to keep from looking like she just walked through an ash pit. She strikes me as one smart, hard-working lady. Between her gender and color, she's probably had to work harder than Francis Pryor and Phil Harding combined to get any recognition. I'm a fan.

What a lovely episode...tenacious, educated..working off the intellectual clues they could find...too bad they had not the chance to excavate little in the graveyard.....It would be interesting to see what might be found with up-to-methods....perhaps what drones with Geo could locate? Victors artwork is brilliant, brings dry archeology to life.
Personally, I find nothing dry in archaeology, but yes, Victor's work is stunning.
And once again, no Saxon building found. :) Still, an interesting episode about an interesting period in English history.
It's quite wrong to assume Edward was born in a "palace" of Aethelred. Emma of Normandy, Aethelred's Queen and Edward's mother, was the wealthiest woman in England and owned many properties, including in Oxfordshire, though I'm not sure about Islip specifically. Edward himself writes that it was his _mother_ that gifted him the _little house_ in Islip rather than his father. This implies a relatively lowkey dwelling rather than a full-blown Saxon palace. It may have been a place of retreat for Emma when she went into seclusion during her pregnancy, as wealthy women often did until modern times. It could even have been a guest house near a monastery she patronized if one existed in the area.

I really like the show, but I have to chuckle a little about the title changes. In one episode, Paul Blinkhorn is a "pottery expert;" in another he is a "ceramicist." In one episode Guy is a "Roman History Expert;" in another he is a "Romanist."

A confessor is not a saintly priest, but rather a canonized saint who was not martyred.

Great episode....Time Team needs to run things differently....they need to have the research done Before the three days of digging begins...as well as the geo-phis....needs to be done well ahead of the dig
Like any tv show, they plan for months ahead to mitigate the most expensive aspect of production - location shoots. Surveying, getting necessary permissions, camera plots, scripts etc are all done before the 3 days. The appeal of the show is how well they make it look spontaneous - but it really isn't.
That stone privy was pretty well built, wasn't it? One might say built like a brick shit house. But that's vulgar. "Built like a stone privy" in polite company.

If you peel off the layers of Norse, Latin and Norman-French vocabulary in modern English you basically end up with weirdly pronounced Dutch. We stopped pronouncing the k in kn- words, stopped pronouncing the '-ght', the '-en' plural survives in only three words, eventually lost the 2nd personal informal pronouns... Dutch ik and OE ic are clearly the same word, and became modern english 'I', I guess because we're basically lazy ;)

Where is the "present barn constructed out of its materials" that Stewart speaks of at about 44:51?
At 27.54, when they show the area 'phizzed' on the opposite side of the diagonal path, there is a clear rectangular 'shadow' in the grass.
However, at the end, they have decided that it was a medieval pond.
A confessor is a saint who died of natural causes as opposed to a martyr . Often used to differentiate two persons of the same name .
I'm guessing they weren't listening when the man read that the "barn" was also turned into a privy. Duh. All that was left of the chapel was the toilet they dug in it.
In Britain "outhouse" doesn't mean an outdoor bathroom like it does in the states, it just means a shed or barn that is outside of the main house. But it is funny that it sounds that way!

So what if Edward was born in Islip. His mother might have just been passing through from one royal estate to another. I've known kids born in one locale, when they were actually just born in a car on the side of the freeway and happend to be registered in that jurisdiction. their parents never actually resided there. seems that was probably edwards nativity, born in a small royal hunting lodge which was the nearest convenient place when his mother went into labor. All the later stories were applied later after he died.
Emma was certainly passed from one 'royal' to another, didn't have a choice about either. She probably enjoyed Cnut a lot more than that ancient, indecisive relic her brother foisted on her.
I'd just like to point out that if they had found "13th Century Dinky toys" as Mick joked, a few people might have asked questions why someone born in the 11th century had toys made 200 years later. But I'm sure the church would have been able to explain away ANOTHER miracle of the relics (Like how Jesus managed to have up to 18 foreskins).

What technique? They way the Time Team goes about it? It is called evaluation or exploratory archaeology. They go in, and try to figure out if there is anything and if there is, if it is something that should be looked into at a later time by people with the means and time to do it justice.

+CologneCarter If I understand it correctly, Time Team dug a lot of places that would otherwise not have been done and during their main years they did the majority of archaeological digs in the UK. The series provided funding for things that would otherwise probably never have happened.
It's not unlikely that nobody else will look at these places in a very long time.
Especially with Saxon halls.
Edward was a a alternative lifestyle monarch, he was married to Harold's sister but produced no children he spent most of his time with his Male French courtiers and almost no time with his beautiful wife?

Imagine you knew exactly where Jesus was born (or walked, ate, urinated or died, was buried,etc.) Any piece of soil that touched that place would become a holy relic. Every piece of gravel, stone, wood, etc. would be taken away and either displayed or sold to the faithful. And any pottery shard which could be Saxon would have been sold by conmen as the cup Edward drank from. I would be shocked if anything at all remained to be found. A saint isn’t a messiah, but the result would likely be the same.
So to summarize: They found absolutely nothing.
Wrong. They found a great deal, just not what they were _specifically_ looking for.
My friend thinks part of his barn was ETCs eel larder (in Somerset).

Tony, never ASSUME. Why not? Break it down and it makes an ASS of U and ME and this time you did get egg on your face, at 45:42, didn't you? Same as you always use the word THEORY, but never have I heard you use the term in a correct scientific context.
Wish they didn't do the reality TV thing of a 3 day time limit...
It wasn't a _reality thing,_ it was just how long such a team needed to do an exploratory dig. All the archæologists had _proper_ jobs in archæology.
