The Grinch (PC / Sega Dreamcast / Sony Playstation) - Part 1 (Whoville)

- The story of "How the Grinch stole Christmas" by Dr. Seuss was unknown to me until I saw the AVGN Christmas special in 2010. It doesn't seem to be told outside of English speaking countries, at least it is unknown in German speaking countries. I recently acquired this game for my Sega Dreamcast and only wanted to see if it worked. My expectations were rather low not knowing the story at all and looking at some terrible box art, a dumb looking main character and mediocre graphics. all I can say is that I'm glad that I have went past the first impression and gave it a chance.
The game was released in the year 2000 as a movie adaptation of the Jim Carrey movie. Back then, it seems he was cast for any role that involves a stupid and slightly retarded character and even though I appreciate that he got a unique style of acting, he's really not an interesting actor in my opinion. there was a version for the Sega Dreamcast, Sony Playstation as well as the PC. There was also a port for the Game Boy Color, but it was an entirely different game due to hardware restrictions.
You are The Grinch who hates Christmas. he lives near Whoville and is sick of all the happiness there so he decides to ruin Christmas by playing some pranks on them and stealing or destroying presents. The game consists of four areas which play like mini open worlds. you can access most parts from the beginning and each area has a list of objectives to complete such as destroying ten snowmen. there are also blueprint parts all over the stage and once completed they allow you to construct a gadget which gives you additional abilities such as climbing or launching rotten eggs.
Essentially, the game is a 3D platformer. Once you complete a few objectives, you unlock the next area. some parts of each area are only accessible once you get the right gadget from another zone. since each area is fairly small, the backtracking is not an issue. it also never gets too complex, but it isn't too trivial either. in my opinion it strikes a good balance and is great for little kids especially since you have unlimited lives and can save any time.
The Grinch is not a technical miracle. The graphics are meh. The Dreamcast is capable of so much more, but it may have been due to the fact that the Sony Playstation was less powerful and so these graphics are the lowest common denominator. The graphics are actually much clearer and more crisp, but on youtube it comes out blurry and muddy for whatever reason. While the graphics are nothing to write home about, the music is just awesome. I love it. Also, the narrator does a great job of telling the story.
Gameplay handles very well. Switching gadgets is easily done and the game makes good use of all the buttons on the dreamcast controller. There are just a few parts which are really cryptic like in the ice cave where you can't see the ledge to hang on to and the vehicle controls could have been tweaked. Aside from that, it is a solid and really fun platformer. there are even some bonus games to unlock by getting enough presents, but those suck and could have been left out completely. as far as I know there is no reward for getting all presents so I skipped that. once you have the grinch copter it becomes easy to get those.
When I first played it, it looked like it had the depth of a mario party game. You enter Whoville and jump on snowmen and presents... that's boring. once you get into the post office, however, it starts to show clever game play mechanics and when you get the first gadget, the rotten egg launcher, it becomes an actual game. it's a pity that the developers didn't take care to give players a better first impression, but if you give the game a chance, you'll be rewarded by a fun game based on a touching story. - Ігри
Wow so much nostalgia from this game. I remember I never knew how to play it, I literally spent hours just fighting with the Whoville children haha.
that is crazy! I never knew how to play this either lol I was so little, like 5 I think, barely remember this game....nostalgia forreal bro

Same hahaha, and I love the OSRS profile pic.
Lmao i'm a RS kid too. i remember getting stuck in the mail room.
Nah i was determined to go down all the tubes and visit different locations, played for hours lol 😅
people who had made this game are geniuses, including music too. simply awesome
Agreed
First game I ever popped in my playstation. It was a christmas gift. Lol. Back then we didn't have much, and my dad was proud he could get me this game. He laughed the first time he saw me play and saw that breath identifier, and used to always make fun of me like I was the grinch. Man did I spend too much time playing this game and I didn't even beat it. I was surely a grinch for that.
Scariest game ever. I remember I was addicted to it but the music was just horrifying. Still gives me the creeps.
Mary Beth Kane right!! I couldn’t finish it cause it was so eerie!
I remember playing this as a kid and I never got far. I didn't knew wtf to do
Angel Salazar i remember playing this as a kid as well and would always cry if i never played it
Angel Salazar same
Angel Salazar Thank God fir walkthroughs now.
Same here!
Same here man. Such a good game though. Wish they'd remake it. At least for the 3ds or something
This game used to scare the living shit outta me
Courage the cowardly dog but make it ✨ grinch ✨
I thought I was the ONLY ONE
As kids, my siblings and I loved the hell out of this game. Of course, whenever we ran into anything difficult, we got my older brother to do it for us. We could never save because we had the ps1 version and played it on a ps2, so we never finished it. My brother was the only one to be able to get to the Who Dump. He passed away last year, and I bought a copy of this game, and playing it on a ps3 I was finally able to finish it.
Amanda Schott I'm touched , So sad

“The Grinch likes to break things with his ROBUST BEHIND.” Hahaha!!!
This game isn't as bad as people say it is. I thought it was pretty fun back in the day
The graphics maybe weren't the greatest, but regardless, it was entertaining and I had a fun time playing it. :)
Veronica Takach Yeah, it was so funny when you could smash the snowmen and crates with his butt xD
I thought it was fun too
Awesome game, loved it back in the day. Got stuck in the summer camp chapter.
Personally i'd like to see an improved modern version of this game.
I agree
+Benjamin MacPherson YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!W
agreed
I agree with you
Me 2.
Too many memories... :''')
This use to be the hardest game to beat I never won
Shanice Williams
Maybe it's because you play as the Grinch and at the end , you end up loving Christmas.
Haha , sameee
10/10 Voice acting.
Actually, the Grinch didn't sound like Jim Carrey's version.
I agree. While I would be impressed if the Grinch’s voice actor did a good Jim Carrey impersonation, I’m glad he decided to come up with his own sound for the Grinch.
I remember this game...used to play it when I was little.
I had this game as a kid. It was pretty fun, but those maps were ridiculous to find.
There were eerie elements to this game for sure. I remember when I played this when I was little, I got an unsettling feeling from just BEING in Mt. Crumpet. However, I've always loved getting access to new stuff, and being excited for eventually getting the Grinch Copter. :3
NARRATOR: The rotten egg launcher’s a brilliant invention as the smell that it brings causes more than just tension. Once an eggshell breaks open and vile fumes escape, who eyes glaze over and who mouths can only gape. When the Grinch needs to hassle the Who’s from afar, he turns to his launcher with a hearty har har. Few things are kim more than who’s equipped to resist. The days and confusion brought on by rotten mist.

Space Ghost makes a great narrator.
These types of games were the real games, the ones that literally took months to compete. I remember my grandma and my cousin literally spent years completing the game
Those pole jumping sections always were hell to me. I also forgot how annoying the scratching sound effect got after a while. But overall, it still remains a pretty solid game for the era.
God damn this game is just as creepy as I remebered it
Would you kindly not use God's Name in vain? It's sinful and offensive. Thank you.
@NorthWestern Railway66 and how do u know
@@OtterloopB omg shut the fuck uuuuuup lmao
I almost beat the game when I was 11 years old IIRC. I was on 99 or 98 percent completion and there was a bug preventing me from finishing the game on Dreamcast. One more house to shoot rotten eggs into but I never could find it because of that bug. Now I got the game for PC and I think I'll finish it properly this time XD I'm 25 years old now by the way. Nostalgia overload.
Dead|End sameee the game crashed and we couldnt play it anymore so downloaded it on our laptop :)
Dead|End wht bug is that??
NARRATOR: The strength of the Grinch is a legend in Whoville. There’s nothing he can’t move with Grinch muscle and will.
4:14
man my childhood right here, graphics aren't good compared to now, but for the time, this was like skyrim xD
That dreamcast intro brought back a ton of nostalgia! Like a lot of other people I never got too far in this game. The music is awesome especially in the beginning.
Back when I was a kid and had so many games that I didnt have to bother beating some of them this was one....
THE GRINCH: “Hey, Max! Listen to me, boy. There’s another spare key in that next room. Go get it!”
NARRATOR: Max the brown dog is the mean one’s right hand mate. He obeys Grinchy orders does not question his fate. This pup boldly ventures where the green one cannot. He approaches who strangers explores a small spot.
4:35
Take me back to the year 2000 so I can play this again at the age of 4 😂
THE GRINCH: “Darn! I forgot my keys. There should be a spare one in one of these boxes.”
NARRATOR: The Grinch likes to brake things with his robust behind. He’ll flatten and smush to get out of a bind. This power is one that he completely controls. He’ll pancake anything to attain all his goals.
3:25
NARRATOR: It’s way down in Whoville that all who folk reside. They’re hugging and kissing the mean Grinch can’t abide. Kindheartedness and joy filled their Whotopia, honor and love filled the Who Cornucopia. The Grinch must steer clear their touch of affection, avoiding all contact will be sheer perfection. But as he evades all their touching and feeling, the Grinch also plays pranks such as Christmas gifts stealing.
7:26
NARRATOR: At the heart of the heartless one’s cave is his pride, a master computer with Grinchy smarts inside.
THE GRINCH: “After I collect the plans that have blown away, I’ll feed them to my processor, and there, they’ll stay. It will build my gadgets with just a click of its gears.”
6:29
I loved this game even though I could jever beat it as a kid lol. If you didnt play it back in the day you wouldnt understand. Best part was when you dressed up as the whoville and you had tp go through the town secretively.
Hey, who are you big daddy??? lol
My brother and I still say this randomly from time to time.. Haha 😂
I'll never forget that funniest line ever. Especially hitting them with rotten eggs saying *Hey!* and then they run away lol.
NARRATOR: An Anti-Who tool for which no blueprints exist is the smelly Grinch breath which cannot be missed. It appears in the shape of a rancid green cloud and can be used anytime it’s always allowed. This fog reveals things the naked eye can’t see, also its rank odor weakens the enemy.
5:22
I work in security and I can confirm that we do indeed use trap doors if we have intruders on the premises.
NARRATOR: The Grinch has invented a vast vacuum system. Through its miles of tubes, he can get to the whos who he feels have so dissed him. As we begin, just the path to Whoville is clear. But as the scheme falls in place, more roots will appear.

I remember playing this on playstation as a kid
Such nostalgia.
When this game first came out I remember it being propped up on the HSN channel. Surprisingly, it actually looks better than I remember. Too bad Jim Carrey wasn’t able to voice the Grinch in this.
0:58 "I have a great idea! *disgruntled noise for a second after* "
One of my favorite games but still gave me some silent hill vibes. I mean the town looks nearly deserted in a snow storm while only a few people are out commuting. Plus the music always gave me some goosebumps vibes
Go Max!
My dad just named our puppy after max and always says "go max" in the grinch's voice
Me and my sister played it and I was little
Watching Grinch again , this game was honestly amazing. PlayStation had such classic games !
"he must be throwing the letters so hard they go threw the wall or something " lmao
Finally figured out which obscure Grinch game I had played on the PC as a small lass. I never forgot the music, 20+ years later! Played it so many times.
Man this game was ahead of it’s time. My brothers and I LOVED THIS! Merry Christmas❤️🎄
Ahh, the grinch. I could never find the last few blueprints for the last contraption, but at least I'm glad that I finished the story.
I will admit though, since it's been quite a long time since I played this game, I honestly don't remember the objectives, (or all of them anyways) so watching this should take me back down memory lane. Thanks :)
Space Ghost is the narrator!
NoParking Berry
I love the grinch
This game its remind me when I child:( , I loved it
This game used to scare me as a little girl (I was sensitive to dark colors and sinister voices back then), and I never even made it past Whoville.
NARRATOR: Press the action button to cause Grinchy effects, this guarantees you’ll be a pain in who next.

эх не когда не забуду эту игру)
I almost smacked my headphones off when that fly started buzzing.
I played this a lot back then, not as bad as you would think, it's clunky yeah but I've always found it to be fun.
DIO's Scary Monster and THE WORLD Ayyy, it's that guy from the Zaibatsu comments! You are literally everywhere I go at this point.
Played it from start to finish. Gah I would love to see a remake of this.
Really loved this game when I was a kid. Anything Christmas-themed I typically found to be exciting 🖤
I remember those damn fly's :P
MikeAbe100 @hgirnch
(I know this comment is four years old, but here's my reply anyway) Those things used to scare me.
I have this game for the PS1!
I half expected the narrator to shoot his Powerbands at the Grinch.
That swinging walk is funny, when you realize he walks like Bugs Bunny
I remember playing this, Barbie detective the mystery of the carnival caper and 102 Dalmatians puppies to the rescue. Talk about nostalgia ❤
I remember my Dad letting me rent this game for PS1 from a store when I was so young. Good memories...
Anyone else here in 2024 out of searching for childhood nostalgia
4:37 BOI
Man i loved playing this game back in elementary 01 to 05, i use to get so excited whenever i could go down a new tube to another location lol 😅.
Thank you so much for doing a playthrough of this! I had this on the Dreamcast when I was just a kid, and despite being a movie tie-in (and maybe a bit mediocre) I got a lot of enjoyment out of it. (Ending of the game sucked tho, lmao). Also, I love the music that plays in the Grinch's lair - it's a great ambient track!
i remember i used to play this, aah the good ol days
My childhood on the PS1, I have that game. Pretty much i going to try out the PS2 Slim and ePSXe (Steam - PC). I have play that game for a long time last time i played that i was only a little.
Ah...those stupid poles...hated them as a child.
I remember playing this game when I was little I always get caught by the little kids and get sent back it's been years
That video game deserves a remake available to Xbox series X, PS5 and Nintendo Switch 😭😭❤❤
I used to play the Demo version of this game back when I was little, I never knew what to do so I just ran around fighting the kids or goofing off as Max for the majority of the game; It's kinda nice getting to see what the full game actually looked like outside of the tiny town.
Also low key, this game was mildly unsettling to me as a kid, idk what about it game me the nerves but it did. xD
Merry Christmas!
35:20 People yelling and running away and the grinch says "YAH GRINCHED!"
I saw this in my recommended and I had to check it out.
Thank you for posting this, I miss playing this game on but since I have a newer computer I can't play it anymore. I wish there was a link to download damn it lol.
This game was so good I had to find the gameplay to this to remember my childhood...I remember I was stuck on the part where u had to shoot the rotten egg at the clock so the doors would open..
I need to download this game and play it again as an adult. As a kid, I enjoyed this game for hours and hours and I got stuck somewhere. I got far, but I never could finish the game. Now I feel to finish the game. I also heard that there will be a PS5 version in 2 months, so I feel the need to buy it and finish what I started as a kid.
Well to be fair, this game did have an offputting atmosphere. It was the music (Which I think was pretty nicely done), and the dark... somewhat outdated quality of the graphics during its time. Had a feeling similar to that of Alone in the Dark. (The DOS game by Infogrames. That game scared me so much when i was a kid.)
gosh i missed this game so much
I played this so much as a kid.
Моя самая любимая игры на PS1, и еще Креш Бандикут 1, 2, 3, Стюрт Литлл 1, 2, и Корпарация Монстров KM
It certainly looks a lot smoother on Dreamcast than the Playstation!
nostalgia omg i used to play this a lot when i was a kid xD
I OWN THIS GAME AND LOVE IT
Me and Mom always played this game :')
I used to own this game as a kid when I owned a dreamcast. makes me feel old seeing it.
I remember playing a bit of this at a restaurant in the Adirondacks
Okay graphics but playing the Grinch was super fun
I play this on 4 or 5th grade in pc and it was hard on later stages but i completed the game and its one of my favorite childhood games.
best game ever on ps1
when i was young the Grphice was so awesome but now OMG :D
sooo true, when i was like 5-6 my mom played this game and i thought how these graphics are hyper realistic XDDD
i know right :D
Abdalla Mohammed
20:22 THE GRIIIIIIIIIIINCH!!!
With Rerez having reviewed the PSone version this past Christmas, I’d like to see the Angry Video Game Nerd review the Dreamcast, Game Boy Color and DS versions!
damn, bring BACK THE MEMORIES
for some reason i don’t remember a damn thing about the gameplay. i just remember this scary ass soundtrack from hell lmao
The Grinch on Nintendo 64 in 2000 ❤ 🎉 😊
how much i loved this game
these graphics are so old but good great video anyway
I can't stop imagining captain murphy narrating this just off screen
