Structural engineering is indispensable to humanity. So, why don’t we make more money?

- Human beings are created for one fundamental reason: to make the life of another human being better. This is not religion, and this is not something that I have dreamt up. It is part of our human chemistry and constitution, it is the way we are built. It is a scientific fact.
The amazing thing about structural engineering is that our profession makes life better for all of humanity on a daily basis. Just look at what we do. Our retrofit work preserves the past, our new work is building the future, but above everything, we are in the business of saving lives! Our work protects humanity from the devastating ravages of natural hazards such as earthquakes, hurricanes and wind storms. People become heroes by saving just one life. Structural engineers are saving lives every time the wind blows!
Structural engineering is the reason we have an economy and an economic infrastructure. If structural engineers stopped work all of human progress would come to a screeching halt!
Structural Engineering is clearly a profession that is indispensable to humanity, but then why don’t our professional fees and compensation reflect our profession's immeasurable contributions to civilization?
Ashraf, thank you. I'm so glad that you're out there making people aware of this problem! After 11 years as a structural engineer in the private consulting world (7 years as a P.E.), I left structural engineering to pursue another opportunity. The primary motivation behind this move was money. I've had younger family members ask me about becoming a structural engineer and I discourage them, saying if they're smart enough to become a structural engineer, they're smart enough to pursue many different careers that will be much more lucrative. It's a shame because I agree that the structural engineering profession is of utmost importance to society...but the rewards aren't nearly worth the investment, years of studying, keeping up with ever-evolving codes and software. I don't see this problem getting better. In fact, I'm only seeing it get worse. As mid-level guys like myself flee the industry and it becomes increasingly difficult to attract the brightest younger students, I really fear for the future of the structural engineering industry.
💯
Well explained sir !!!!
I am so proud to be a structural engineer 🎯🎯
I also blame the institutions. They are influenced / lobbied by the big engineering consultants to keep wages low and hence increase company profits. I went for an interview with a very prestigious consultancy, they offered me the job but on a lower salary than I was already on, stating it is a privilege to work for such a prestigious company and I should think less about money but more about work satisfaction.
Totally agree, it is all about compagny's profit and the rest is just slogen.
Being a structural engineer I agree what you are saying
How much do you earn now in 2021 say for a year? In rupees

Do you have an opinion of the WTC disintegration
When automotive engineers (for example) do great job, the result of their work is IMMEDIATELY seen through driving dynamics of the car against competitors. Great work of structural engineers is seen and thereby recognized only when building, bridge or any structure survive major earthquake. The bare fact that structure is standing fully functional when there is no earthquake or other disasters is taken FOR GRANTED !!!
Educating people through media of the level of fundamental end applied knowledge that is necessary for conducting structural analysis and design is one (less efficient) way of raising the public seance of appreciation for our profession. Things should be done in reverse.
More practical way is to establish firm rules for engineering fees in relation to long term economic and community benefits associated with given structure.
First, the problem MUST be generally recognized by majority of engineers - that is the starting point.
Next, appropriate engineering committees can be formed with specific tasks for establishing rules for engineering fees. After adoption, these rules will serve like design codes.
By amount of fees for our engineering work, the rest of community will start to form opinion about our value.
I agree-
majority of engineers must be on board because of undercutting of fees. Also a set rule for fees in general is required and must be abide by. Also increasing the barrier to entry maybe a good idea? for example structural engineers MUST have the S.E to command these fees.
true
100% correct
I kept on pursuing this career. Now at my career end, I really rue that decision
You are my ideal and our icon, I love this profession and i will serve the humanity, and i don't care about money.
Wow....
What a personality ....
What a speech
True lines for Civil Engineer {Structural Engineer}
Love you Sir....
The solution is simple. We as a community if engineers need to charge more, not give away our services so the owner/developer make even more $. I see a lot of semi retired structural engineers practically give away thier services to just stay busy. That only hurts us all. CHARGE MORE and dont let our conservative nature get in the way of that
He shocked my core just like how MCE does to my models.... Damn it is soo true
Great message, amazing edit! Bravo to the production team for wrapping this message up beautifully.
Salute from Bangladesh
huge respect to your speech
Completely agree, so true. Thank you very much for bringing up this topic!!!
Mr Ashraf Habibullah you, my friend, should run for President of AISC, ASME, ASCE, ASEE, IEEE, and NSPE.
I Probably left out a few others but you get my calculated point.
The current situation of every corner of world.
Still today in late Aug 2022 3years after publishing this vid has made half the number of views and average UA-camr would make in one day .. there is something terribly wrong going on ...
Confucius said to his son " Son do you want to live without being obliged to work ? "
The son replied " yes of course "
Confucius said to him " then do what you love the most "
Same story happened with me and my deceased father . One point is little bit different in the story. it was him that told me to become a structural Engineer .A big mystery to me is : how can a mechanic who never put his feet in a university knows about structural engineering .
RIP dad I love you !

Credit is not being given to the people who are keeping this world alive and afloat literally
No roads, No bridges, No Buildings, No technology? where would this world be?
Everything was built on a platform a structural platform for thousands upon thousands of years that we even know of, imagine the history of structural engineering we are not aware of yet
After over 25 years of practice I'm done with this profession. What do I have? Two leaky condo lawsuits that I am personally and corporately named. The claim? I failed to protect the structural components of the building from future water ingress. My insurance has gone through the roof and I am telling my defense lawyer he doesn't need to review 4000 emails in my project folder unless there's a specific claim that we need to defend. I fucking give up.
but waterproofing wasnt in the scope of your work?
@@jusufvelovic7562 no, there is an envelope consultant that does that. But there was structural damage due to decay so the lawyers want to blame me. Envelope consultant missed that the roofer stapled the membrane down on all the balconies.
Engineers are just punching bags for lawyers.
What a speech! thanks Ashraf
Very nice 👍 inspirational 🙏
Is there an extended version of this video? If yes, could you share it with us?
university is part of a business eco-system. well said at 2:50-3:00
Problem is that this is an industry where everybody and their cousin can start a design firm tomorrow and be fairly successful charging very low competitive fees. This sounds great on the surface but is detrimental to the firm’s engineers who must settle on low wages.
❤❤
This is true.. thanks sir
I feel Structural Engineer shall atleast charge 15+20% of the total cost of construction.
Wow proud nedian
THankful to almighty to have u
Hello Ashraf, thanks a lot for this video. We really love it! We would like to share it with our audience (structural engineers) with subtitles in Czech. Would you please provide us permission to do that? Thanks a lot.
Go ahead! Spread the word! Show it to anyone and everyone! You are welcome to subtitle it. Say hello to everyone at IDEA StatiCa. Hope to you at one of our celebrations of our profession.
All the best. Ashraf
Ps. Send me a link to the subtitled version. Thanks!
Thanks a lot for your permission and kind words, Ashraf. Greetings to you from the whole IDEA StatiCa team.
Here is the subtitled video: ua-cam.com/video/Rf38PNNoy0o/v-deo.html
We presented this video on our conference "Statika a technologie" (Structural Engineering and Technologies) last week to almost 200 people in the crowd. It was really welcomed and discussed a lot. Btw. part of the conference was dedicated to structural engineers, their education and salaries a well and this video was a great teaser to it.
Thank you Sir, this series is great
Thank you for this video...Please keep up this channel...This message is important!
So how could we structural engineer change this situation and get a bigger piece of cake?
Quit and go back to school for an MBA
Nice video! Keep up the good work.
Great
Abso;utely true
YES!
So what’s the solution?
sad reality..
how do i contact you? i've education related project
Is someone here offer job to me I am a civil engineer fresher
Ashraf Habibullah is one of my Hero. With all due respect, I disagree with most of this talk.
Structural engineers create huge value, but we do not get paid in millions because the percentage reward for the total value generated is very tiny. This is due to a simple fundamental idea called “Competition.” Higher the competition the smaller the reward.
The curious thing about this reward as a proportion of value is that it does not care about the size of value metric at all. Whis is why a realtor make more money than engineers or in a larger context, google makes more money than the entire airline industry in US. We can see this pattern almost everywhere. Scientists who create huge value almost make no money at all. Same goes to Doctors who work 48hr long shifts and ruin their whole work life balance for peanuts.
It is wrong. Unfortunately, this is how free market capitalism work. If making money is your goal, do not be a structural engineer folks!
Competition is not the only factor.
People are used to paying realtors 5% commissions even though it makes no sense--it's a worthless job that could be done with a website. But anxiety over the large purchase and force of habit keep everyone doing it (for now).
People are also used to paying low structural engineering fees because generally the work gets done, and the engineers work overtime to get it done, because they feel they have a "duty." Valuing one's own time would make a huge difference in engineering.
Can't compare the Safety of Structures with Real Estate.
Life of structure shall given 1st priority.
The work associated to Structural Engineers carries out complex analysis (static or dynamic) complicated works, Details of each Components, Load Calculations (Dead Load, Live Load, Wind Load, Earthquake Load etc), Design of each components Separately (Slab, Beam, Column, Stair case, Footings) & together, Reinforcement detailing & detailed drawings of each floor with top view, front view, sectional elevation, r/f detailing & on the top of it to complete it this complicated process within deadline.
Complexity & the level of creativity of work is way to high compare a Real Estate Agents where they have to call & sell & a flat on a given deadline that's it & check with the sales.
It's just that real estate agents have figured out their way earning correctly & structural engineers are working at low charges for no reason.
Structure Consultant shall atleast charge 10% of total cost of work.
Because of a lack of self-respect and a belief that the profession exists to "serve" people.
If you aren't already educated, stay away from structural engineering. Tell your kids to do the same.
The market will eventually fix the problem.
Bitcoin will be solve the problem.
Please don't post Such type of video's. As a learning structural engineer it's Very hurting. Whatever be the reality, money is not everything. This type of video's cause mental stress. 😔😔😔😔😔
Bhai sahab...bura mat manna...mene aapke bohot se comments deke hai structural engineering video se related...
Shayad aapka bhi structural engineering passion hai🤗...and mera bhi🌟
Who is this clown Satan's luminous vest :)))
Under that clown's vest is one of the most knowledgeable structural engineers in the world d. His company has developed a 3-dimensional computer analysis programs that is in use on every continent. I have known him professionally for 30 plus years and have been grateful for his advice and guidance in my career as a structural engineer.
You obviously know nothing about the industry, don’t judge a book by its cover, it will serve you well in the future.
Great
