      Jesse dates? LOL I thought he was focused just on chess?! My take: CB11 (release date 2010) was great, as it was cracked but in a way once you used CB11 either the legal version or the cracked version, there was no need to upgrade since it largely did what you needed it to do. As for ICC, I never really used it but what made it less popular (I hear) was their "anti-cheat" software, which for honest players was annoying since it was so intrusive, essentially residing in your memory and constantly monitoring all your programs.

    I could never figure out how to get Chessbase to show the engine and notation at reasonable sizes with a nice big board without spending five minutes each session on it. And of course it only works on the windows computer that I have upstairs for iracing. Lichess studies are so much more intuitive and work on my ipad.

    If lichess had no limit on games that can go into a study I would not need a local chess database program. I've been using SCID-vs-PC in Linux for years as it stores all of my games and I can see a tree of my move selections, etc.

    I had my first win against Fabiano Caruana on ICC and I even made a chess engine for a bot. If anyone played my engine "Kitten" let me know :) It was rated 1700-1900 in blitz and 1900-2100 in bullet and made every move in 0.2 secs. From my end my main memory was to check through the logs looking for if someone famous had played, but also sadly to block it from playing players that had played the same game over and over more than ten times in row.

    Chessbase programs and online tools are great imo, but they really need some serious UI retooling. I agree they need to stop resting on their laurels over this---they need to keep pace with their competition. Also being more affordable would help, too.

      Couple of things annoy me about chessbase:
      1. The lack of development of their Android apps, where they basically just stopped updating them.
      2. You would spend a fortune on Chessbase, but they would only allow an (expensive) upgrade for the next iteration only. As has been pointed out, you were paying a lot of money for a few features you wouldn't use...

    It's very hard to maintain a medium-sized company based on chess as a service. Most things can be replicated without lock in, pretty much everything has a free alternative including video courses and spaced repetition drilling, so you cannot charge much and the pie is just not that big even with the recent chess popularity increase.

    I remember the Politics channel on ICC way back in the 1990s - thinking there was some total loonies on there - little did I know it's all now mainstream in certain quarters. This is one of my biggest ICC memories, chatting with random people on various ICC channels, but thinking 'OMG, these people on the politics channel are nuts'.

    Yahoo! chess was tragic. If someone offered a draw, a pop-up would force you to click "decline" before you could make a move. Some wiseguy in a lost position kept spamming draw offers to try and make me lose on time declining them all. I beat him and never went back. 😀

    Chessbase is THE buggiest piece of software I own. It's a steaming pile of s___. Provided with positively ZERO documentation, not even so much as a functioning help file. The UI is all but unusable on a system with high res monitors because of all the video bugs. Things like you cannot "zoom" a window at times without restarting the system. Minimize and maximize are ok, but putting two windows on the screen at once, no bueno. I have 2 UHD monitors mounted side by side and vertically (portrait), and I can only guess CB has some issue with that. I get virtually no use out of it.

    Chessbase probably knows how to go about porting it to a Mac but publishing native programs on Mac OS is a total pain in the ass. You need to buy specific hardware and a license key to compile on there. It is typically a pathetically low percentage of the marketshare for most software and companies choose not to support Mac OS as a result.

    • @musicalneptunian

      I used to play a lot on FICS in the early zeroes. Yeah there were some rude players there. FICS never progressed; having to use an external client like babaschess. My main achievement on FICS was to win the "highest rated" current game being played. I was about 2000 and I beat someone who was 2200. Small beer I know but only a few titled players there. FICS was a popular coaching site for awhile.

    I don't think chessbase realise how big of a business threat it is not to properly support anything other than windows and in their quirky 90s ways to boot.
    It's creating avenues to destroy their grip on the professional chess world as they stupidly look at short term market share numbers to justify their internal investment.

    • @musicalneptunian
      @musicalneptunian 7 місяців тому

      I agree. If chessbase cannot work on another OS then at the very least they should provide a WINE or virtual machine option.
