    This is one of the nicest examples of a C64 display on a CRT I have seen despite the usual video recording artifacts. It also helps that you have a PVM. Wish I could find one at a good price.

      jdryyz This display really is a beautiful one, and looks even better in person. Its a JVC though and not a Sony but it only supports S-Video and composite, no RGB sadly. It also handles PAL signals which is perfect since I own quite a few PAL Commodores as well from Europe. I found this one online for about $60 shipped a couple years ago...

      @@aphexteknol Ouch! I am sad because where I worked until 2014 in a TV company they still had hundreds of very valuable and high quality (for us) crts : Sony, JVC. At the time they were already decommissioning them, so I missed an opportunity. They have probably now been destroyed despite being fully functional. Bummer!

    Awesome troubleshooting and repair! You are wise to spread the word about the Diag Cart being a good guide only...a lot of chain reaction faults on the C64.

      You probably dont give a shit but if you are bored like me atm then you can watch pretty much all of the new movies on InstaFlixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last few days :)

    Now that I've dabbled a bit in repairing some c64, this video has been very informative. Thanks!
    The piggy backing technique is one I can start using right away to test which cia on my board is broken.

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  6 років тому +1

      I’ve never personally tried piggybacking CIA chips as I usually pull them and test them separately in my chip testing board to ensure they work 100%... Let me know how it works if you do!

    Nice work! Somebody should hack that test program to optionally skip the RAM tests.

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  6 років тому +1

      The version I’m running is already hacked to detect the kernal revision. If someone could add a RAM test skip that would be great! Thanks for watching!

      Or, is Bedford Level Experiment referring to the Dead Test cart?

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  6 років тому

      MindFlareRetro We’re talking about the diagnostic test harness cartridge actually. He whipped me up a special modified version that skips the RAM tests too in mere hours!

      Now I'm curious about the Dead Test cart, I hadn't heard of it until you used it in the video. Found it here: www.thefuturewas8bit.com/c64-deadtest.html

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  6 років тому +1

      Bedford Level Experiment The dead test cart is an indispensable part of my C64 repair toolkit. The dead test carts claim to fame is its ability to generate flash codes to pinpoint RAM chip errors through a pretty clever trick. Saves me tons of time diagnosing dead RAM chips when there are 8 separate chips, each one handling 64k x 1 bit of course. :)

    Heya nice vids lug the C64 but i got the old on out of 1984, it's comes on but i not getting no power to the cassette tape? i try a other cassette tape and no power? can you tell me whats is broken? my other 2 newer C64 works all fine :)

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  5 років тому

      Do you mean the C64 board you are working on is a 1984? So its a 250425? If you aren’t getting the motor in your C2N cassette to spin when connected, a few things you can try is to clean the contacts on the board for the cassette port first. If that doesn’t help, you might have an issue with the TIP 29 transistor which switches the cassette motor power on and off. A multimeter would be handy so you can check to see if you are getting the proper voltages on the cassette connector...

    anychance I could inquire for some help? i have a c64 I want to fix and mod, but so far i just got the black screen with no flash, also if you were to sell a c64, how much would you charge?

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  5 років тому

      Do you mean you are getting a black screen with no flash codes while powering on with a dead test cartridge, or just powering the machine up with nothing else? Black screens can be difficult to diagnose even for pros, but in many cases it is either a dead PLA chip or bad RAM.... As for the value of a C64, condition is everything and prices fluctuate a lot, at least if you go by USA eBay standards. A 7-8 out of 10 condition C64 in fully working and tested condition thats been gone through by an expert repair person should fetch at least $150 and likely more. Better condition and included accessories or original packaging has a big effect on price as well...If you need more help you can catch me on Twitter at @aphexteknol....

    I'm curious: given the number of faults in this machine, what made you decide to repair it rather than use it as a parts donor?

    • @aphexteknol
      @aphexteknol  6 років тому +2

      Michael Graf I would only part out a C64 if the case was terrible condition and no longer usable (broken motherboards posts, cracks, etc) or the board had heavy trace damage from a previous botched repair attempt. Otherwise I try to save them all and I’m usually successful. :)

    I do remember someone managing to plug the power supply into the serial port on a 128D is this possible on any revision c 64 of course in this case it fried the serial port control logic hardware.
