  • As a parent you are probably madly searching the internet to find answers about your chid's shaking/shuddering symptoms.
It is important to record this behaviour to share with your child's paediatrician for further analysis and differential diagnosis. Always record the behaviour if you can, and speak with your GP or Paediatrician to ensure that you are accessing the best care for your child.
In the majority of cases they are completely harmless and as our paediatrician said "sometimes kids do weird things".
Both of our sons presented with shudders (freezes) before they were 2 years of age. Our children never lost consciousness or fell, and would immediately returned to what they were doing before the shuddering spell took place.
Our first son was admitted for further testing via EEG in an overnight hospital stay for monitoring and gathering data. The reason he was referred was because in one of his videos during the attacks he was laughing before and after the shudder. Outcome: The results were that he did not have evidence of epilepsy or any tumours or syndromes.
If you child is laughing or appears to have uncontrolled laughing during these shudders/attacks, speak with your paediatrician as soon as possible.
Shudders or shuddering attacks are benign (not harmful) and something that a child naturally grows out of. They are not epileptic seizures, although they sure can look scary, the child is often unaware/unaffected by them.
Our first son presented with shudders/attacks in clusters (sometimes 13 in a row) often when he was tired. Over a few months they got less and less until they completely disappeared.
This is our youngest son who appeared tired right before these attacks were observed. He has only had a few more of these and we have not seen any recently.
I post videos on Speech Pathology mainly so follow my channel and feel free to ask me any questions relation to speech pathology and I'll do my best to make a short video answering the question.
I've also created a free download about children's speech and language milestones on my website below.
