You've enlightened me with your words and made me realized everything I've accomplished in my life is nothing.I am worthless and dumb... Thank you so much!
In 1987, I learnt that the monthly meeting of the Hong Kong Student Association of a particular university in San Franciso consisted of one weekend day of mahjong playing; they had 40-some mahjong tables in a big school auditorium at a time because there were some 150 members in the association. I thought the idea was so cute!
I learned the game back around 1990 from a guy and his family I used to spend a lot of time with. Then I moved to Minnesota from Nevada and got a job in one of the Indian casinos. I made 4 very good friends up there and showed them the game. We started playing for a penny a point almost every week and many times someone would end up winning over $50 from the others at the end of the match. Have an XBox 360? There is a great mahjongg game on XBox live you can buy for $5. Check it out!
One other thing: The budget PC game company made a mahjongg game years ago called Mahjongg: Game of the Four Winds or something like that. It's not the mix and match mahjongg most people know. It's the real thing just like for the XBox 360. It is available on many sites for $15 - $30 if you do a Google search. You could also try and hunt down a Torrent for it if you're into that, but I don't know of any existing torrents offhand. ;-D
Mahjong is the same as gin rummy, only with tiles and a bit more in the way of scoring options. It only looks hard because the symbols on the tiles are strange, and the Oriental pros play at a frenetic pace. Most leisurely games in America are somewhat slower, like 5 - 10 seconds per turn rather than 2 - 3 seconds like in China, Japan or Korea.
Well, the scoring *is* simple, but because of how the math works it is a good idea to have a calculator for backup to avoid mistakes. In a mahjong hand, you score points depending on your combinations of tiles, and these points are all added together like in countless similar games. However, a hand's final score can be "doubled" and re-doubled many times over thus creating some rather large numbers. Example: A hand is worth 28 points with 6 doubles, so 28 x 2^6 = 28 x 64 = 1,792 points.
@sobusted1245 I was born to play, I play for fun and sometimes I suck, and sometimes I'm lucky, but I enjoy this game because its in my blood. I started taking interest in this sport since I was two years old when I'd take tiles from the table during a game.
@mlcoo17 it is far more complex in terms of play and scenarios. There are only ~9 hands in poker while in Mahjong there are over 80. The lower probability hands net you more points. So in every round you have to consider if you go for a risky hand or play it safe. With 14 tiles in hand and 136 (riichi) tiles in all, I would say statistically it is more complex. I can teach poker to someone in a couple minutes. Mahjong takes considerably longer.
Hi there. I am interested in the getting all the videos for mahjong world series tournament. is there any link or site that i can visit to get them? been looking around and i cant get any. thanks.
Even the pro's only win about 40% of the time. I want to compete but I'm no where near good enough. No one around me plays so I can only play online which is completely different then using tiles.
I don't totally hate playing mahjong, i still don't understand 100% of the game and i have no idea how to count points. But Poker is extremly easy to play in comparaison really.
I'm very new as well, but I started by watching this guys tutorial. ua-cam.com/video/mh0brmqq4sk/v-deo.html You probably want to have a day set aside for this as it is about a 4 hour tutorial for all his videos together. After ward there is a smartphone app (on android at least) called "saki" that's what I play its not to difficult as long as you watched the tutorials mentioned above. After that I don't know what you should do I'm just trying to get comfortable with the tiles myself. It might be good when your still learning the tiles to have a picture in Google images up of them, that's what I do. Eventually you'll need to know something called a yaku. Here's a website for a list of them. www.japanesemahjong.net/mahjong-rules/yaku/ I hope this helps, its a pretty fun game so far and I hope you get better at it as well.
mahjongtime.com is a free (or pay) world wide mahjong gaming site. They also have an app you can download. Start with the school games before you play with others. I'm skilled in Hong Kong and Riichi mahjong thanks to this game site.
wow didnt know..i guess she puts up that appearance to fool her opponent , thinking that shes white and SHOULD know nothing about mah jong...but then ends up dominating them all LOL

Is this series on youtube?
Since this video came out in 2008, is there a yearly tournament or was it a 1-time thing?
so is it by points or by fastest win or win count? I could just go for chicken all day
Where can I watch the episodes? Or where can I just watch a play of mahjong, by real players, like videos ?
Thanks! =)
