🇷🇸 ZLATIBOR, Serbia in SUMMER! | A Tourist RIP-OFF or FIRST CLASS Tourism? | PROSCIUTTO EVERYWHERE!

  • 🇷🇸 Zlatibor (Златибор), Serbia - For episode 6 of my 2022 Serbia Travel series, I finally make it to the tourist location of Zlatibor! We check out a Spomenik (monument), have the most INSANE lepinja with pršuta (prosciutto EVERYWHERE!), visit markets and ride a gondola which goes up to Tornik ski resort as well as get VERY wet! Zlatibor is definitely a good option in terms of places to visit in Serbia, whether it be in summer or winter! The question is, like many tourist destinations, is it a RIP-OFF or is it FIRST CLASS tourism? (clue - I really liked it!)
Zlatibor is well-known for its skiing, health and medical tourism. This video covers just a small percentage of the many things to do in Zlatibor!
People often only go to Belgrade and Novi Sad. But the scenery, history, architecture, people and Serbian food in this region are all amazing. There are great bus/train connections to locations such as Bajina Bašta, Užice, Požega, Ovčar Banja, and more!
This is my 5th visit to Serbia. Two of my trips were heavily impacted by the pandemic, but in 2021 I managed to explore quite extensively, visiting outstanding locations such as Kruševac, Subotica, and Kragujevac!

🇬🇧 I hope you enjoyed Zlatibor! As I said, this video only represents a small selection of the activities in Zlatibor. The restaurant choices are plentiful, there are many tours and activities to get involved in (particularly for families and children), and of course, going in the winter will provide a completely different experience if you are into winter sports. My videos are generally focused on lesser-known, non-touristic places, so as a long-term budget traveller, going to a tourist location can be a SHOCK to the bank balance! But, regardless, I really liked Zlatibor and I'm sure I'd go back!
*Remember that filming a video takes around 3x longer than simply going there, so I generally prefer to focus on 3/4 things in one video only.*
*If you've been to Zlatibor, what can you recommend?*

I'm from Liverpool, live in Belgrade, we spend every Xmas here. The snow has been poor last 2 years, but lots to do, it's a year round destination. Skiing is only just over 20€ a pass, best in March. Remember, if you want an alpine Xmas break, it's not Xmas here, we go 24th to 29th and it's so cheap. Orthodox Xmas is 7th Jan. If you do want to splash, best restaurant is Gastro Pub, very affordable still. Zlatibor is inexpensive for Westerners, ridiculously cheap, but guy in video has been in Užice, which is a small city and cheaper again. I'm certain we paid 1200 return on golden gondola.

When I was at Zlatibor, some 20 years ago, that pond in center, was really - a pond. In winter it would freeze, and kids (me too!) would skate there.
There was "The Palisade" hotel, a super-fancy-socialist-resort, a central street leading downwards from the pond, that green market that included the best-ever home-made meat products. People would go all the way from Belgrade to get specialties from Zlatibor - sudzuk, prosciutto, bacon, sausages, everything meat and goat/cow/sheep milk/cheese, rakias etc ... it was a worthwhile trip.
Later they opened a pub for new-generation kids and skiers somewhere in 90s, and basically the rest of Zlatibor was "woods where bears and wolves could eat you".
There were also a few of spa health centers, basically rehabs for rheumatism/arthritis/MS that you could stay at only by doctor orders, and they had very specialized equipment and top medical staff, where you couldn't just go in and stay, you had to have medical permit to stay issued by state MD comity. There were also few places where school children would stay for excursions. Everything else was hiking, wolves, bears, cabins and endless rough herb fields and pine woods. Stunningly silent.
Then, after 90s, people started investing (laundering) money into buildings, squares, shops ... Zlatibor looks now like a shit city, while not so long ago it was a place of peace and tranquility where old people went to rehab and young ones went to enjoy nature and breed deeply clean mountain air. Now it is shit. Everything, including peasant properties, It's owned by Montenegrin drug mafia and about nobody from Serbia goes there anymore to stay more than a day trip.

I've never heard of bears and wolves at Zlatibor. I think their habitats are rather thick forests than bare Zlatibor plains.
I agree that Zlatibor is seeing more and more of disproportional construction, but IT IS still very popular, actually the most popular all the year round tourist resort in Serbia. It seems that number of tourist apartments has not yet matched the demand in the peak winter and summer seasons. So, more of them are being built.

For wolves, they would usually organize a hunt only when they become to many and start killing too many sheep or other domestic animals. Now that it's overdeveloped, and not really an expensive tranquil mountain sanctuary, and most of the forest cut down for profit, I can imagine most of animals are gone too.

This was especially funny...then the memorial to partisans lowered the tone- and maybe you got wet - and it was all good - with a reassuring ending. Few do sarcasm as well as you, maybe in part because you keep the heavy light and the light heavy and we get to crash at home wherever that is or however long, as you did. And you don't demand our laughter and our tears. Most places you go appear to be good places to live. Have you considered real estate? Selling home shares? I think of your future...Surely not mine! Rip-off places tend to be fun. They've made it! And so many people who've made it feel ripped off. They forget to enjoy the dough or the churches or the cats. Serbians seem like dough geniuses. I guess all nations deserve an outlet...Thanks!

Ten euros for so many kilometers ride in Gondola over nice landscape (plus two stops where you can pause as long as you like, walk around and enjoy yourself), and back, is nothing compared to bloody 36 quid for a bloody single turn on a bloody ferris wheel called London eye. :-)
That complet lepinya may have been tasty to a hungry tourist, but those four leafs of meat were not prosciutto, but what is called pecheniza. Good enough, though. Good to have choice of all those sides.
Ripping off is when you go, for instance, to Salzburg, or Hasellstatt in Austria and pay 5 euroes for a tackily limpid americano coffee in a place with no pricelist, no bill, and a barely decent toilet.
Talking about it, Serbia is still a pretty fair country. And, if you explore, you can find very, very good restaurants with very, very good food at very, very reasonable prices. One of them is just off the Zlatibor centre.

    • @davidostrowski679

Omg I'm with you on all of that. When I was 21, two friends thought it'd be a good idea to buy London Eye tickets. Worst 21st ever! And HALLSTATT! Good grief. I did a video there early 2020 and the gist of it was basically what you said!
Salzburg I was ok with but I tried to stick to free things and scenery! Vienna I was a bit underwhelmed although had to splash out on Sachertorte.
Re gondola you're right, I purposely do minimal research on things like that and a) didn't realise it was so long and b) didn't know there were 2 stops until I was on it. I prefer the element of surprise lol

@@davidostrowski679 Thanks, now I'm all with you on Salzburg as to its beauty and texture, but still cannot grasp (we were there a forthnight ago) why we did not get a receipt in any cafe or restaurant where we ate or had coffee/drinks/sweets. It would have been against the law in Serbia. We were even charged a glass of water in the very centre in Salzburg - not a bottle of water, but a plain glass of (very good) tap water. In Melk, we had to ask for a glass of water with our coffees (expensive but good), we thought it goes without asking as in so many countries.
I can also remember very precious pair of very long hot dogs in our plates in a restaurant in Durnstein that they passed as sausages. I never eat hot dogs, so I passed them on to my wife who was hungry enough to have them. Though the goulash sauce that went with them was delicious, as well as the grape juice. So, with a little help of two dipping buns I survived.
BTW, I don't believe that spots with monuments in Serbia were the exact actual places of execution. Cannot see why would anyone arduously go uphill to a summit in the middle of nowhere to kill someone. It sounds more logical that the spots were deliberately chosen after the war as prominent places where the monuments could be seen from afar.

Problems in that places are the garbage which everywhere, than dirt, old underdeveloped sistem of old roads with plenty of hols. Cities are mostly ugly and chaotic, with unfinished houses, socialistic buildings with ruined facades. Pollution in cities is also very high, overpopulation in Belgrade are like in movie Blade Runner. It's real terrible. Only decent cities are in Vojvodina in North Serbia.

Socialist buildings are top of my list. I've spent months in Serbia over the last 3 years and yes it isn't perfect but for a long term traveller it's affordable and I find the scenery especially later in the year to be far superior to anywhere further west. It depends what you're into. Yes Subotica is very pretty and perfect but give me brutalism and pollution over that any day. We all have different tastes.

It's like the opposite issue. Purely working to exist. Higher cost of living still means the same level of disposable income meaning EU/West isn't the paradise many think. I have a lot of English students from countries like Russia, Belarus who have all left for EU. I live very much on a budget and prefer a minimalistic life but I'm fortunate I can still earn in GBP or USD
